    Yep. That's why I'm here. I can get a 1500 yard cone of thread for $11, or (10) spools of 150 yards of the same thread for around $80. I figured there had to be a way. You've inspired me to create a solution similar to yours. Thanks!

    On their website Baby Lock says you are supposed to put the large spool cap on the horizontal pin and then feed the thread through its center. Not sure if that makes much of a difference or not.

    My Singer has a prone orientated small thread spool spindle. And, since I also have a serger with a butt ton of different colored thread, those big cones are practically all I use.
    But, there's still a bit of thread flapping around when under sewing operations.
    My solution? I run the thread through the spindle hole of a small empty spool. Then, I install the empty spool as-normal for for small-spool sewing.
    Now, the thread comes off the netted cone, up through the top eyelet of the thread spool stand, through the center spindle hole of the empty spool in the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) designated location, and on through the rest of the machine's thread path.
    There's absolutely no more thread flapping. Everything feeds perfectly and functions *_exactly_* like one would expect a well-engineered operation to perform.

    Thanks so much for this terrific tutorial. I just bought a Baby Lock Brilliant and was stumped on how to use my cones. I tried winding a bobbin using my cone holder but did something wrong. My bobbin looked like a cat played with it. Must not have positioned it correctly. Will try your method. I already made my dog a quilt.

    Oh interesting idea with the numbers. I’m going to teach sewing soon and have mid century machines. Think will label the threading on each machine. I was also using a tin veggie can but its a bit light and bounces the spool back some. Will try a mug!

    How do I use a needle threader on the sewing machine

  • @irmar
    @irmar Před 8 měsíci

    You know when you buy cakes of empty CDs or DVDs, they are often packed on a plastic round base with a pole in the middle? I use that, which I padded with cottonwool and wrapped with cellotape all around. They work better than the mug. But now I think I'm going to buy a stand, I think it will feed the thread to the machine more consistently.

    Good video. But using a cone is not what I'm after. My brother has a quilting machine. The limiting factor is the amount of thread on the bobbin. Have you heard of any way to adapt a bobbin to use more thread? Even a regular-sized spool of thread would be tremendously better than what a normal bobbin holds.

    • @mbcalderwood
      @mbcalderwood  Před rokem

      Hi there! i understand your frustration. Unfortunate i've never seen or heard of any way to increase the bobbin thread quantity. What i do is i wind several bobbins at the start of any project. I know this is not the info your hoping for!! But, sadly, i don't think there is a way. You just have to have that on your "important factors list" when you purchase a new machine.

    • @CCoburn3
      @CCoburn3 Před rokem

      @@mbcalderwood Yeah. That seems to be the way of it. Maybe I can invent a device that will allow use of a large spool. Then I'll make a million. Thanks.

    My machine also has a lid, I noticed you had it closed while using the thread holder, did this catch the thread or give any problems. Thanks.

    • @mbcalderwood
      @mbcalderwood  Před 5 lety +2

      no, on my machine i have a "little hole" where the lid doesn't close all the way. So it causes me no problems. i might in the future try to remove the lid because its a bit inconvenient. AND just food for thought... the new JUKI 2000 sewing machine has a regular spot for thread AND a spot for cone thread. Im super interested in that machine!!!

  • @drivenjames
    @drivenjames Před 3 lety +1

    Im a newby to sewing and am making cornhole bags. I have a brother sewing machine.. inexpensive.. but my question is do you use the thicker thread on your bobbin also? If so, do you wind it the same way as standard thread?

    i can't find a video showing how to place the gutermann thread on a vertical spool holder. printing up or printing down? how do we set up the spool on the vertical spool holder so it spins correctly? thanks. amy

    • @BarstowDM
      @BarstowDM Před 5 lety +1

      That shouldn't matter, as long as the thread can move freely. I would look at the line from your spool to the first thread guide; would having the thread come off of one side or the other of your spool make a straighter line or prevent the thread from touching the body of your machine? Go with that orientation.

    • @mbcalderwood
      @mbcalderwood  Před 5 lety

      upside down or right side up should not matter. In general the small side of the cone goes up. @barstowndm is correct.

    How do you use two threads at one time

    • @mbcalderwood
      @mbcalderwood  Před rokem

      If you want to run them in the same, single needle, just have 2 cups or stands and run them together.
      *if your planning on using a double needle just follow the same, that i just stated, and tread the 2 needles separately
      Good luck! Let me know if you get it working!

  • @porchiagilbreath5517

    When you close the lid where is the thread going in under the lid? Thanks

    • @mbcalderwood
      @mbcalderwood  Před 5 lety +1

      starting from the back of the machine- the thread comes through a little gap by the handle, and around the bobbin winder peg (only for stability, its not necessary) then i thread the machine as normal.
      I hope this helps some! Reply if you need more explanation :)
