  • Their first album is a true classic in my opinion. They come across a bit dorky here. Especially the bass player.

@MissSharper I agree, they're one of the few bands that have evolved wonderfully and kept their essence

@MissSharper Yes, I agree, Steve's an excellent drummer. Why did they get rid of him? Weird that Brian is ashamed of this era. Their first album is my favorite by a long way.

Yeah, they hardly play the older stuff these days. The first 2 albums are by far the best.
The last 2 times I've seen them I've been quote disappointed. They promised to play older stuff at the 20th anniversary and really didn't. A shame.

@@SpencerF6 I've seen Placebo 35-ish times since 2007, as I was only a kid in the 90's (currently 29 lol), I saw about 18 gigs of the 20th reunion tour in 2016/17 - they did Lady of the FLowers which I was thrilled about, but genuinely curious what was disappointing about them to you during those 2? There were so many mixed reviews on it, I always like asking fans and wanted to know what they missed/were expecting

    • @SpencerF6

@@lockedherselfout Wowzer, seeing 18 gigs just for the reunion tour! I've gone to see a few bands 2 nights in a row, but that's as crazy as I've got!
I love the first 2 albums. A perfect gig for me would be them playing both of those in their entirety. I was happy that they played more of the older stuff than usual but one of the things I didn't like is them playing slowed down versions of Teenage Angst and 36 Degrees.
Looking back at the old setlist, they did play a bit of a variety. Part of the issue as well was the venue. I'm not mad about Wembley Arena. Just this big flat space in the standing area. I saw them at Brixton and it's a great venue. Big enough but still maintaining the intimacy of a smaller gig if you get in the front part.
The first gig that I saw them at was when Black Market Music came out, and I wasn't that sure about the album at first...but it did grow on me and I do rate it in hindsight.
Weird facts......I once had Brian's mobile number. I was selling phones and his manager bought it from me. I actually got to choose the number! It had 007 in it! I thought that would be funny!
I did meet him once at another gig. He'd recently cut his hair quite short and I spotted him near the bar with Steve and some of their friends. I ended up chatting to him for 10 mins. A lovely guy!
      :-)

@@SpencerF6 Yeah I went a little hard on that reunion tour because I thought maybe they'd switch up the setlist every night (they never do that, I dont know what i was thinking hahaha), 90% of all those gigs I'm always in the front row so all gigs tend to feel SOMEWHAT intimate to me, Wembley I've never been a fan of so I totally understand!.
I saw them in Boston in 2014 where it was this super tiny venue and I could touch Brian's pedal board from the barrier, that's how crammed it was and it was probably one of the best gigs. I know they're too big to being playing places like that but in Canada and US (I'm from Canada) they don't sell out big venues, people just don't know who they are. I paid $18 American to see them in Boston in '14, in 2007 it was even cheaper and I pay like 32 quid when I see them in the UK. It's insane.
They're always fabulous at Brixton, I think Brian says he holds a soft spot in his heart for that venue. I have met Brian a handful of times, I've been fortunate enough he's been lovely to me, I've chatted to Stef quite a bit as ironically he's less shy with fans vs Brian these days. That's SOO funny about the mobile, back in the day before smart phones I assume? haha.
And they've slowed down teenage angst and 36 degrees literally since 2004 and never the original way since if I recall correctly. "That they were too young when they wrote them and they never should have been fast" Brian said something like that. I was really hoping for "Allergic" or "Brick Shithouse" but LOTF is my absolute fav Placebo song so I suppose I can't complain.... I also saw them at Meltdown in 2018 and that was my last, and I guess it will be my last for a while with this COVID situation. Are you holding hope for their 8th album? haha!

@MissSharper Interesting. I've not seen it. I can understand him being embarrassed by his own antics but not the music. In my opinion their first album is them at their peak. The sound was totally new and 'forward facing'. Nothing retro. Their subsequent albums (to me) sounded very 80s and not all that distinctive (is just my opinion). Not really explored Battle for the Sun. Is very mature but very heavy and too far from the clean razor-edge sound from their first album. I'll listen to it again.

@aleynad26B well, from wht I know he quite dislikes the era...I mean their attitude, the way of living, the excesses, the drugs etc....not the songs and the album...actually they perform the song Nancy Boy in this tour....they opened the gig here in Athens with it..

@molkoula yeah, that too, but i clearly remember i read one intw where he said he was not happy with that material, it was during the meds tour (his fav album at that time) he also said maybe BMM was ok but the rest was pretty standard. Of course i know they're playing nancy boy now (even when they said they wouldn't play it anymore) but i think they're just pleasing their audience.
