During the late afternoon of May 15, 1997, just before sunset, Burlington Northern SD9 no. 6199 was spotting and kicking grain cars in and around the BNSF railyard in McCook, Nebraska. Despite the recent merger, there was no hint of the new Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway on the Hastings Subdivision of the one-time Chicago, Burlington & Quincy mainline between Denver, Colorado, and Chicago, Illinois. Former Burlington Northern SD9 no. 6199, still in BN colors, was originally built as CB&Q (Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) no. 452 by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in September 1957. It was renumbered BN no. 6199 by August 1971. About two years after being spotted here, near West 4th Street and West A Street in McCook, BN no. 6199 was rebuilt into an SD9-3 in June 1999, and then subsequently renumbered BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) no. 6199 in July. The unit was rebuilt again with remote control capabilities in July 2002, renumbered BNSF no. 1713 in November 2006, and finally renumbered again to BNSF no. 1553 by June 2010.
