Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Today at the Backup Gun Match, I'm shooting a French Modèle 1892 service revolver. It's a 6-shot revolver with a swing-out cylinder, chambered for the 8x27mm cartridge (often called 8mm Lebel, although it really shouldn't be). I'll be shooting in a mix of single action and double action as seems best on each stage. This particular 1892 was made in 1922 and is really rough on the outside but very nice on the inside.
All things considered, it's not a bad gun. Definitely underpowered by modern standards, but that does make it a very pleasant gun to shoot, with minimal recoil. The sights are pretty decent for 1892, but the trigger is not great. Still, I think I was able to put up a pretty respectable performance.
General Rules for the B.U.G. Match:
Score is points minus time. Time is recorded as the number of full seconds only (ie, 5.75 seconds is scored as 5). All targets are worth up to 7 points. Steel that falls is full score, and 3 points per hit that does not cause it to fall. Paper targets are worth 7 in the head, 5 in the A zone, 3 in the C zone, and 1 in the D zone. Shoot as much or as little as you like; no penalties for missing or not engaging.

19th century perhaps.

I don't know. Many a day has seen me fondling a new pistol or revolver whilst sitting in my recliner enjoying a cup of coffee, or perhaps a can of Coors. Most recently my new .22LR Revolver from Brazil a Taurus clone of the 22/32 kit gun like my dad carried on the farm when he went walking his trap line along the creek that ran through the West Pasture, me tagging along trying to keep up with dad who was 6 feet tall, me being a bit shorter as I was a pre-teen at that time (I did surpass his height by 3 inches as I grew up and out!) I always wanted a 22/32 but could never find one I could afford, a few years ago I was at a shot show when this dealer had the Taurus on his table, I had to have it and at $450.00 I though it a bit steep but it was old stock, new unfired in the box so I scarfed it up and have never been disappointed in the little 9 shot revolver. Even found some HKS Speed Loaders for her so I can use her like I did the Model 19 Smiths I carried as a rookie cop.
I wanna see Ian in a John Wick film, either as a *competent* opponent, or an old buddy on John's side that hooks him up with a amazing piece of forgotten hardware.
That might make even that movie watchable.
That needs to be a thing! And I am 87% sure he would hand Mr. Wick a Chauchat. Dear god why isn't this already a meme.
You don't want a brand new AR, you want this G11.

3:07 "Il y a un pistolet dans le potage ! Pourquoi ?"
Translation for those wondering :
"There is a pistol in the soup ! Why ?"
P.S : as a Frenchman, hearing Ian speak French never fails to entertain me ^^
Yeah, french people are weird, they don't spit in the soup, but they toss pistols in it
It's kinda like "une couille dans le pâté" I think :D I can imagine when they designed the contest :
"So, the various exercices will reflect possible real life situations...
- Oh, yes, like when you have to recover your weapon on the floor of the car before engaging hostiles behing you.
- Exactly! Or when you fumble your weapon in the cooking pot but you have to kill all the terrorists in the kitchen!
- Or creepy undead girls crawling out of the TV to eat your soul!
-Man, those happen so often, we need to get better prepared for that."
Is it the continental equivalent/misunderstanding of 'gunpowder tea' ?
@@Zorglub1966 It is to get a better kick out of the soup!
Have you seen the size of French Flys?
Stopping power is compromised when you don't hit the target, better to have a smaller hit than a big miss
That "Merde!" sounded perfectly on point I must say ;) Your french is improving

Doesn’t everyone store a pistol in a cooking pot? :-P
Standard place for a backup gun.
I seem to recall a story about someone who stored a gun in a pan or pot in the oven. Either they turned it on or a guest did and the gun shot the oven.
I store my cooking pot in my pistol....... somehow
@@john-paulsilke893 Oh the inhumanity of it all.
If you're wearing pants, you have a pistol. How far do you make it out of bed in the morning without? Pee, get coffee, then back to the bathroom for a shower, then clothes is my routine. Therefore, logically, there should be something that fits the mission of "repel boarders" in the bathroom and one in the kitchen, concealed but readily accessible. A pistol in the towels and one in a spare coffee container or stew pot makes perfect sense. Maybe you make it as far as the living room- a carbine or shotgun under the couch will do there.
" Il y a un pistolet dans le potage" Hon hon hon hon :D
Nice one gun jesus.

What I like about being on a range is the sense of humour. Even the RO is giggling.
I think it's the hat
Because they know Ian, and that he always brings fun guns. You can hear someone asking what he's brought in one of these videos.
Seeing these old guns that you display and talk about is very cool, but watching you actually use them gives a totally different perspective. Thank you.
Good thing it doesn't use 7.65×20mm Longue then.
Do you have any 32 french lounge
I like how you match the hat you’re wearing to the gun.

And when i say only officier had this kepi it's for general and this gun it's reserved to officer like captain, they charge with this gun in trenches
Careful with Fiocchi, I’ve had squibs with the bullet halfway down bore. Luckily I noticed before shooting the next round. I then pulled the rest of the box and found that some had no powder.
You're not the only person who has been the victim of that P.O.S. ammo company!
I thought I was the only one! Have had multiple squibs with fiocchi 8mm revolver ammo
Dang thanks for the heads up I recently got a box from my local store that been there for good knows how long. I be sure to check it.

I love this kind of thing, it's super interesting to see these kind of guns run through practical shooting drills. We need more of this kind of thing!
I take solace in knowing Ian successfully used his French Model of 1892 service revolver to prevent an evil girl from coming through his TV and eating his soul.
according to the book "French Service Handguns 1858-2004" by Medlin and Huon the 8 mm "M1892" cartridge had a muzzle velocity of 715 ft/sec for 137 ft-lb of muzzle energy. Also according to them the Fiocchi cartridge has a 110 gr bullet at 850 ft/sec.
Only Ian would find an old French revolver in a chili pot. 🤣🤣🤣
I really like the stage introduction Ian, please keep up the good work!

When my significant other asks me why I always have an 1892 French revolver in hand when watching The Ring:
"Because Gun Jesus told me to."
Why is the pistol in to pot?
Why to shoot the rabbit for the stew of course.

So happy you still have your soul. I picked up one of the Spanish S&W clones used as the alternate and also called the 1892. While I am one of the few men left who do practice often with a 45 caliber double action revolver, you make a good point about low recoil. In that vein I shoot many full wad cutter 38's through my Hand Ejectors. I spoke to Ken Hackathorne at the Lehmi County Big Bore revolver shoot last fall, and he said his interview with you was very enjoyable. He echoed my sentiment that your work stands out.

That gun is Chief Inspector Maigret's sidearm in the novels by George Simenon (1931 onwards). It's also described as his service revolver from the Great War. It seems to be a worthy police revolver based on your video. Also, according to what I've read it was the chief French pistol of the Great War. Very interesting video!

I have one of these guns, bought it in Arequipa Peru on my senior class trip in high school. Not sure how a WWI era French military issue handgun ended up in such a remote location in South America. Sure there’sa story there.
I’ve never tried to fire mine although it’s in fairly decent shape. Exterior is very pitted, like the one in this video.
I wish I had matches like that where I live.
Quelle chapeau!
Ian preparing for the day he ends up in a horror movie/videogame I see.
Man you are having a real negative effect on me. I used to be in love with more POWER! I owned .44 magnum revolvers, even went so far as to buy a .22 Magnum Semi-auto pistol as well as several other .22 mag handguns. I carried a .45 ACP for most of my police career because .45 is better then .38 even though we were issued .357 magnums and carried them with full power .357 in the gun, we always trained with .38 special light wadcutters which I thought very unrealistic. With my .45 I always used 230 grain hardball because that was what I trained with in the US Army, and that was my primary arm when I humped PRIC77 Radios in Nam. I even shot a few dozen rounds in the heat of battle when we were attacked on a mission in Nam, and actually hit a few little yellow skinned folk who were trying to kill me at the time. Now, I watch you with the little French guns (there is some French Blood in my veins according to family history, however mostly Swede) and I am beginning to want the little revolvers an semi-auto's that the French invented and carried in battle. Funny how that works. You have shown many a gun that I would love to have, this revolver is among them.
That was cool.
