Karbonius CSL Intake Install in an 03' E46 M3

  • Hello everyone, my first Karbonius CSL intake install. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. The most pain in the butt was installing the oem clamps on the intake. Great fitment on all components. Would love to add one on my E46 M3.

    What an amazing set up. As the car drives towards the camera you hear that cf csl box and as it drives away you then hear that aggressive exhaust. Just perfect!

    I've also never heard a video that captured the deep bellow of a Ducati 998 carbon airbox. This bike is also music instrument.

    For the smaller hose, unclip it at the oil pan...much easier.

      Yeah, I’ve done it both ways but can see it can be easier from the oil pan. 👍

    Hi!
    I am planning to buy a Karbonius CSL Airbox in the near future, so this was a very helpful video for me, thank you.
    Could you tell me why didn't you used the Stock or European Air Intake Temperature sensor place? Does this have anything to do with the ECU? My car is a European one, but I bought an MSS54HP DME from the US (for running the CSL firmware I needed the HP version).

      We went with an Alfa-N tune and it uses a sensor that’s in Fahrenheit and it doesn’t fit in the CF stock location. Also, with the IAT sensor being lower in the fog light area, it will read cooler temps. So if you got a DME from this side of the pond then you might have to do the same unless it was changed to Celsius. Take the time to check the rivnuts in the unit as all of mine were lose and lost some screws. I emailed them and to be honest, for how much it cost the reply did not sit well with me. I guess that’s what happens when you fix there errors. I have installed two Karbonius intakes. The white E46 is coming back so I can check the rivnuts.

      @@tekmotorsports4052 Hey, which Alpha N-Tune did you guys go with for the time being? I'm curious why you went Alpha N when you seem to have installed the MAP which would be if there was to be a non-Alpha N Tune as Alpha N is generally w/ no MAP. I appreciate all the helpful info on the channel. I'm mid-install on this same DIY. Your other responses have helped greatly so far so thank you!!!

      @@tennisfan4201 Damn, I am mistaken. We didn’t go with an Alpha N as we did install a MAP sensor. We used a Kassel tune to get the car run and had Hassan remote tuned the car at a Dyno. I think when I typed my error is when I was looking into getting one for my E46 and I was leaning towards the Alpha tune.

    Nice install video, I currently have the same airbox. If I wanted to use the alpha N tune, would I need a MAP or MAF sensor or are both not needed for the alpha N tune? Thanks

      Some have not installed a MAP but it does help at idle. No power gain. You would have to create something to run a MAF sensor on the Karbonius airbox. Not sure if they have an option to run a MAF. I would recommend running the MAP sensor.

      No bending. Just rotated it. I did have to remove it and route it underneath the wire harness and along the heater valves.

    @idokwatcher2062 Somehow your comment/questions only show up my email and not as a comment here. Anyways… the MAF sensor plug was taped up neatly and zip tied with plug/pins facing the ground and tucked under the snorkel so there’s less of a chance for it to collect water. Always try to safe the harness. Another thing is that we bought an adapter for the IAT sensor so if we did decide to cut it, it wouldn’t be the OEM supplied connector.

      Thank you. I wish the previous owner of mine bought plug and play harness. These cars are becoming so expensive, too expensive for such hack jobs they did.

    Where you able to remove just the uptube from the fog light ducting, or did you have to remove the entire thing? I need to relocate this sensor too.

      I just removed the tube that connects to the actual fog light air dam. It has to nipples that it snaps into so it takes a little force to remove.

    did you need to upload a bench tune or anything to it before starting it after install? I'm going to be doing the same install and was curious before getting it dyno tuned if it needed a some kind of base tune to then drive it at all, such as to shop to get custom tune..? does ecu just adjust per new iat/ map setup to a "drivable" degree?

      We flashed the dme with the CSL tune before starting the engine. Then it was taken to the Dyno to final tuning.

      @@tennisfan4201 We were emailed the file and uploaded to the dme. Had to download software (free to do) to install tune with OBD2 cable. It’s really easy. You’ll need to purchase a cable tho.

    hi tek motorsport i am fitting karbonious csl airbox at the moment. i followed your instruction in regards to fitting oil dipstick but as it enters oil sump it is seating at a angle. would this leak oil? probably have to bend it slightly what you reckon on this.

      Well that’s sucks. I was able to have it seated correctly on the oil pan and it sealed as it should. You can bend the tube as I have done it on another CSL intake.

    how was the HTE tune? Do you think the tune is necessary for all csl air boxes? Im running the karb air box with kassel csl dme and map sensor.

      The HTE tune was great. We did have to get it dyno’d cause we were having a idle break up at low rpm. Shelf (or base) tunes are good but every engine is different. Different headers/exhaust etc. With the CSL intake providing good ho gains and better to have it tuned. These air box’s are not cheap so why not spend a little extra to get the biggest bang for your buck.

      Well, it’s a little tough to say as the car has only been driven about 400 miles since the install. Garage Queen! BUT… when I was installing the CF roof. I did take a look and nothing looked out of place. Wish I had a better answer for you.

      Correct, pre is before 2003.5. Another way to check is the intake hose between the throttle bodies (TB’s) & intake (IN). If it has a small reduction in size from the IN side to the TB’s then it’s the pre. If it has a bigger reduction in size from the IN to TB’s, then it’s the post 2003.5. That’s what I’ve come across. Also, the CSL intake start in the 2000-2001 cars so they’ll have the smaller “pre” hoses. Also, (sorry about a lot of “also’s”) the older “pre” intake have the yellow trumpets as the “post” have black trumpets. I have a SMG with yellow trumpets and a manual intake with black trumpets so I’m not 100% on that one.

      Yes, there’s a MAP sensor adapter that replaces a tube on the vacuum rail along side the fuel rail. Hope that’s what you are referring to.

      Here are the links for the parts. Karbonius CSL have a few options like the sensor/hose kit, filter, & snorkel. The IAT relocation and the MAP sensor with bracket. And the clamps for the intake boots.

      @@jjohn56 Here’s the one I bought but have yet to use it. From Amazon. They may not fit in certain section without removing some hoses. May still break out my 90* needle nose pliers for those tight places.

      Yes, that’s what we did. Then we took it to a dyno to get the final tune done. Just need to let them know it’s a manual.

    You reference “MAF sensor” multiple times when I think you mean “AIT”. The MAF goes away completely, doesn’t it?

      Yeah… cause I didn’t do the editing and corrected myself in the video it stayed in there. Yes, the MAF is no longer used with the CSL intake.
