NB. None of the products mentioned in this video were sponsored. They're just the products I used.
Please also note, I am very new to gardening so even though I researched a lot for this video and did my best to ensure everything in this video is accurate, I still have lots to learn. Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I could have done better or if you have any tips or tricks for growing courgettes better.

Thanks a lot. This is a very informative video. I have watched a few to get tips as have never grown them before. There is so much to remember and do that i dont know if i would succeed. Also so much can go wrong throughout the process. One other gardener put some coffee granules and a bit of sand in the soil and also something called Red X. But it is a costly business if you cant afford 'the ingredients'. So i will give it a go and keep my not so green fingers crossed. Xx take care and you are a great teacher. Peace.

I think a lot of products are optional to boost production or help soil aeration, but you definitely can get crops even without the boost. Personally, as a beginner, I'd keep things simple, and try experimenting with boosters with a future growing project, after establishing more confidence and experience with the basics.
My first year growing I felt exactly the same: worried at every step that I might do something wrong, but just give it your best shot - that's all we can do :) Learn up on what you can, and with a bit of luck, everything will go brilliantly for you! Good luck!

Please use the Timestamp map in the description to jump to a specific sub-topic you're looking for :)
    More notes:
0:39 Other than Orelia, there are other spineless varieties too
eg. Spineless Beauty Zucchini & Spineless Perfection. Add "spineless" to your zucchini seed search and you might find more new spineless varieties :)
27:58 Some say to give 750mg calcium or even up to x3-this-amount every 2-4 weeks

One of the best zucchini videos out there! So informative and covers everything. Really glad you put in the part about checking the fruit because that's the thing I'm most scared about, hoping I don't have any of those bad seeds in my batch. Will come back to this video as I go through the process (currently on day 11!) What would you suggest for a rookie that grew way too many seedlings? I've got about 9 that sprouted and it's just me & my husband 🙈😂

I'm glad you found the video helpful :)
With 9 plants, I'd probably try to give some away as gifts to friends and family if I could. If it's just the two of you, 3-4 plants should be plenty. You could keep one or two extra as backups if you want to be extra cautious. If you can't give any plants away and all your plants survive including the backups, then you'll likely have quite a lot of courgettes on your hands this summer. Possible solutions:
      - experiment with lots of courgette recipes (eg courgette bread, cakes etc),
      - giving the veggies away to friends, family & neigbours
      - doing some kind of trades / swaps,
      - or even selling them!
      - Or you could have a play around and let some of the extra plants grow really huuuge courgettes just for fun to see how big they get, which would stop them producing quite as many.

@@jivinggerbil These are great ideas, thanks so much! I think I'll ask friends if they want some and then I'll leave 3 or 4 and if it get's overwhelming I know my mum would take a bunch to work.
I was worried about giving away seedlings in case they were a bad batch but will just let the people growing them know that they need to check them first (will send them this video).
I also have a lot of tomato seedlings haha so might do the same for those because I only have a balcony to work with. It's really big for London but still worried I'll have more forest than I'd hoped for 😂 Thanks for your help!

Love your video, do informative and useful. One question about the watering method , not watering the leaves. What is the cause of the tiny white spots on the leaves? Are they harmless, or it’s a disease that the defected leaves should be removed?

    • @jivinggerbil
      @jivinggerbil  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for your comment :)
The spotting could be sunburn that occurs usually on the oldest, less toughened leaves that grew when the plant was started off indoors and was not used to strong direct outdoor sun. Hardening off is meant to help prevent too much sunburn from happening but sometimes even after hardening off properly, it still happens. I'm not sure but I think it can also more occur on plants that were sown outside from the start if the sun is particularly strong and intense. I think some people use shade cloths to protect the leaves from periods of extreme prolonged heat and strong sun.
Mild sunburn is harmless - those leaves can still function to serve the plant and the plant will survive - it just doesn't look pretty. If the plant has lots of leaves, so has some to spare, you can remove the sunburned ones. If it doesn't have a lot of leaves yet, I'd leave the sunburned ones attached until it grows more leaves, and then remove the damaged ones.
