I’m certain you already sent this out by now lol, but I work at a food pantr which is funded by a /thrift shop and an M-Audio midi controller just came in to our donation bin so I snagged it, cause the old ladies in the back definitely would have thrown it away. I’ve been wanting a synth for a while but I’m poor (and I hate using computers) so I think this item might be the way to go for me. I like the sounds, and it seems like it does a little of everything. So maybe I’ll pick one of these up as a little hardware synth for my tiny apartment setup. My fiancées upright bass takes all the room so I need to fit my stuff into a 3x3 square lol. Thanks for taking the time to show it. Even though the noise section caught my headphones off guard lol.
combined with an affordable midi keyboard that might have its own hold and arp lock functionality, and I think you might have a winner. Full size midi port ftw.
okay sure wow you caught me its paraphonic because the filter is either single trigger or multi retrigger, not true polyphony. also dont sir me, im a woman i just have a deep voice. now we both have corrected each other wow, go be pedantic elsewhere.
I really love my VS mini. I could do without the 120 something different "wave forms" I would have liked less, more common forms and hybrids, but that's a tiny complaint. A midi keyboard really opens the functionality up. Super fun to put one earbud in and fiddle f*ck with it while watching something. It's a really great tool to learn synthesis on. The onboard oscilloscope is awesome. I like slapping a simple beat on my Volca Sample and running my VS through a fuzz and delay and making Sludge Doom core ambient pop.
I've been into guitar and bass for many years. Recently have taken the deep dive into the world of synth. I'd run this through my old Zoom gx1on and some of my noise pedals and start experimenting. I love interesting looking and sounding gear. This would be my first synth.
Good review, very in-depth! It looks pretty cool! Glad the joystick has so much functionality (was worried it would be like a direction pad or something just for menu navigation and stuff). I'd totally use that for some, like, in between song action lead -ins and stuff... or as a subtle solo/bridge/tangential. Arpeggios and stuff... I'd put through my korg mini-kp for the swirling possibilities it would give it... like analog computer space-kami, if that (probably doesn't) make sense... and to loop it on occasion for like, half drum half noise-bleep loops. Got a JT-4000 recently, love it, and (especially at the price point) this looks like a good companion to it to add to the arsenal.
This synth is a compact, dream version of an absolute classic! I’ve wanted to own the original for the better part of 25 years! This thing is a beast, from drones and pads to straight up chaos when fed through a DOD Death Metal pedal and an Earthquaker Devices Astral Destiny fed back through my Mackie 13 channel. I could literally write with this as my primary sound source for multiple releases. Great review!!
there are countless ways id love to use this on a new project as well as incorporate it into my production for other artists. great review regardless tho! keep doing your thing ive been a fan the moment i discovered your work last year
I just got the Pro VS mini and it goes well with my Zvex Fuzz Factory and EHX Cathedral reverb. I’m just getting familiar with it but it seems to be a nice piece of gear.
Because it's so small, I'd probably use it in the studio and record drone loops and percusive hits into my sp404, then drone and bring in and out percusive patterns to the point of clipping through the 404's fx.
I've been on the "wait list" via Sweetwater for what seems like forever. How would I use it? Run it through my CDR-70 pedal for some ambient / drone-y goodness. :)
I’d integrate into my existing synth-based setup, including running it through a modular system and 303. I’d also take it out as part of a live suitcase-based setup as an additional, live, voice/synth. This would all result in at least 4-5 albums based around this instrument.
i would use the synth with a lot of pedals and also i would tape a contact mic to it and use it for self defense / offense and also kiss it and cherish it
I'd use the synth to weirdly control my eurorack setup, which processes external sources. id put it in a feedback loop so it could be processed with the eurorack its actually controlling.
honest answer: had to flip my synth shit during a financial downturn. would use it for generating queasy bass tones/filter abuse for power electronics purposes for the time being. once i'm able to get a dedicated bass synth in a few months this would go directly to one of two nyc noisers i know who are stuck borrowing synths for most gigs (whoever wants it more). always appreciate these videos
Probably the worst answer but honest. I wouldn't be able to pair it with anything as it would be my first... Many a night pondering the twisted sounds I might evoke, from such a synth😮
I’ll run it thru pedals, sample it and send midi to it. I wish they had made the mini cut down version of the Jupiter 8 tbh but this thing sounds pretty good.
Great review!!! When have one of these, whether by winning this one or buying my own, I'll make it a noise source for my suitcase noise rig, set up so that I can use it as a portable rig with the built in keyboard or plug in and control it with my midi controller when I'm at home (or anywhere else where I can set it up fully)
Great ideas so far everyone! Love the variety of your ideas for your setups!! Remember, to enter the contest you must also subscribe to the channel!! I will choose in winner by April 6th at the earliest, end of April at the latest. I'll announce the winner whenever the next review video drops!
If I won your lovely little synth I would feed various midi arps into it while I mutated them with the vector joystick and filters, then through a bucket brigade delay and reverb, recording the result onto a terrible cheap portable tape recorder, I'd then sample sections of that to use in my music. Nice show of what it can do, cool video.
Stellar review as always. I'd combine that thing with other synths like ones from Mattoverse and adorable pedals like that from MASF for the ultimate experimental sonic excursions and noise explorations.
Subbed! Going to get me this synth as next... my setup: korg volca s1 pajen hack, sample 2, ableton, 2 turntables ... maybe 3 😊😮❤ shalom brothers & sisters 🎉
I think I’d run this through grind, grunge, a couple delays, stereo something, some parallel octave, summed down to mono, into an arapanoid clone, and maybe finish it up into an eq and atreides.
I would feed it through the lmnc filter grr eurorack module I have that can really mess sounds up a lot and make it really dirty, lots of clipping and resonance
I would obviously run it through distortion, but I'd love to see what happens with some software effects to mess it up like Freakshow industry's stuff, Ohm, or Trash 2, give my noisy neighbor some payback
I just randomly determined the winner for the contest and it is you! Email desdemona@ill.earth your name and address and screencap this as proof. I will announce your name in the next video! Congratulations! The synth is yours!

This plus a cheap $50 laptop and you good to go
combined with an affordable midi keyboard that might have its own hold and arp lock functionality, and I think you might have a winner. Full size midi port ftw.
Sir I respectfully would like to correct you on one thing. This is a four voice paraphonic not polyphonic synthesizer.
okay sure wow you caught me its paraphonic because the filter is either single trigger or multi retrigger, not true polyphony. also dont sir me, im a woman i just have a deep voice. now we both have corrected each other wow, go be pedantic elsewhere.
I’d use the synth by blasting it through every pedal I have

would pair with a microfreak for cold. cold, COLD winter dungeon synth
I just got the Pro VS mini and it goes well with my Zvex Fuzz Factory and EHX Cathedral reverb.

actually tho i’ve been meaning to put more synth lines into my music early faradayribcage had a lot more of them
I'd use the synth to weirdly control my eurorack setup, which processes external sources. id put it in a feedback loop so it could be processed with the eurorack its actually controlling.

I would use it to give a different timbre to my mix. It would be great for ambient and melodic sounds. Looks exciting.
Probably the worst answer but honest. I wouldn't be able to pair it with anything as it would be my first... Many a night pondering the twisted sounds I might evoke, from such a synth😮

Id run this through a massive amount of reverb and delay

I would like to incorporate it into my death/doom/atmospheric bands long drawn out Floyd like electronic interludes/harsh noise/drones.

I would added to my Digitakt portable set up!
Comment faire pour remaitre tout le Pro VS Mini en Usines et avoir le manuel en français Merci 😊.

i would run in through the HNW by Gen Thalz ... and I'm in Australia!
I think I’d run this through grind, grunge, a couple delays, stereo something, some parallel octave, summed down to mono, into an arapanoid clone, and maybe finish it up into an eq and atreides.
I would use it to be able to make loud noises again, my synthesizer broke and I'm poor lmao
I would feed it through the lmnc filter grr eurorack module I have that can really mess sounds up a lot and make it really dirty, lots of clipping and resonance
I'd use this synth with mixing with a death metal pedal and shitty reverb with a feedback loop
i really like the vcv rack scopes and whatnot. is your voice going through that seven seas wavetable vco?
How do you do a simple four notes repeating sequence without any of the 32 programnes coming in in the background?
Please?
Clearly I would make synth pop. If I had any talent. Pending that, through the pedal chain and just vibe to the ambiance that creates.
a theme song could be nice, it'd be sick if the theme song warped and destroyed itself, a cut up theme jingle, noise jingles! the world is ready!
38:53 wtf man 😂
Wasn't expecting that, but had a gigle
At 43:13 now xD
Thank you for the review / tutorial!
I would obviously run it through distortion, but I'd love to see what happens with some software effects to mess it up like Freakshow industry's stuff, Ohm, or Trash 2, give my noisy neighbor some payback
i would talk to my demon friends with it :)
How'd I use this?
It'd midi fuck my VSTs and interact with my behringer crave :)
Use 9$ midi keyboard,for example...
i wanna use it with drum triggers
