as last month was the celebration of Cambodian (Khmer) New Year and this month was the start of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Month, I find myself reflecting on my identity.
growing up as a blend of Vietnamese and Khmer heritage (Khmer Krom) was a beautiful yet sometimes bewildering experience. I found myself fluent in only one language-Vietnamese. at times, this left me feeling torn between my dual identities, grappling with a sense of inadequacy for not fully embodying my Cambodian roots. I felt caught between two worlds, too Vietnamese to feel Cambodian and too Cambodian to feel Vietnamese.
however, as I journeyed through life, I discovered the power of embracing my heritage, regardless of the timing.
as I celebrate Cambodian New Year and AAPI month, paying homage to my dad whose spirit resides in this beautiful temple and sharing these moments with my mom, I’m filled with pride. it’s a journey to reclaim and celebrate my Khmer culture, preserving its traditions while continuing to immerse myself in its richness and complexity. and it’s never too late, to learn who you are and your history.
sharing stories like mine, like yours, is a constant reminder of the richness and diversity within our community.
