  • Mark Fulford is an international consultant on Organic Farming. His farm in Monroe has hosted one of my bee yards for some years. Today we chatted about why the buckwheat next to my hives produce lots of nectar and yet I have had hives in huge fields of buckwheat that produced no nectar. Mark explains why and we discuss a lot of other companion plantings he does to help his farm and my bees.

I was so pleased to get the unexpected chance to shoot a video with Mark that I forgot to turn the camera on! We had to shoot it twice! So good of him to put up with me!!!!

nice to hear some one talking about buckwheat ... I plant a couple acres in buckwheat , sunflowers , canola ,with winter squash . and in my field corn , also some buckwheat and sunflowers , and more winter squash ... no sprays , cultivated with a tractor . and another couple acres in phacelia , canola , and sweetclover. Like you said , it gives the bees more ...

I've seen honeybee activity on buckwheat be done by 10:30 or 11 in the morning.

Thank You for the info! I planted 12 acres of Hubam Sweet White clover this year and the bees are hammering it. So good to have something for them to work and make honey in the normal dearth period. It also fixes nitrogen. I have to check into the Sainfoil crop. Also thinking of Hairy Vetch. I want to get my soil more healthy as they had been in corn for years before now. Funny how just lately I have been thinking about if there is more nectar release in a healthy soil? Mark would indicate that there is. Thanks Tim

    Great video Peter, thank you!
I’m curious what kind of “right kind” of phosphorus Mark was talking about? I’m definitely going to look into planting some buckwheat and sainfoin.

I wonder if sainfoin is limited to more northern areas or if it could grow in NE TN. I may try getting some seed and planting some next spring.

Hello! I'm from Argentina and hope to become a beekeeper. Your videos have been very helpful, any books or other sources of information you recommend? Thanks

  • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc

Peter very good and timely video. This brings up a question that maybe you or Mark can answer. I have my bees but also am a farmer and have soybeans. About all the wild plants in the area are done blooming but my bees are finding nectar somewhere because they are drawing comb although not as heavily as in May and June. Could it be the soybeans? They are loaded with blooms. I have been told that soybean honey is common down south but not so much farther north where I am. What have been your experience with soybeans. Also as Mark talked about I do fertilize with a foliar fertilizer on the soybeans.
