I am a big fan of sunglasses and spectacles and I found your channel on youtube and I must say that I have learned a lot from you. Although all these sunglasses are out of my reach as I am from India and there are not many options available here especially Cartier etc. I cannot afford.
I really like the set up of your entire video. You dress in simple clothing, your voice is very calming, you don't speak too quickly or too slowly, theres just the perfect amount of echo in the room, no distractions. It feels like it's just you and me in a consultation.
I wear a few Lindbergs and had no idea about their perception or status in the industry. To be honest, I have little knowledge of brands in the space in general. Thanks for the great video Rob. It's always refreshing to see someone who actually knows what the words underrated and overrated mean, since for much of the internet nowadays overrated = bad and anything decent is automatically underrated. I thought it was interesting to see the correlation in your picks between a brand's "rating" and their exclusivity. OP being a lux brand is obviously everywhere but at the start of my eyewear journey I was a bit surprised to see just how easy it was to get hold of Dita glasses, not only are they stocked by seemingly every eyewear store but also in department stores like Selfridges sitting alongside the common fashion brands, usually next to Dolce and Gabbana if it's in alphabetical order :) And Lindberg as well, for the prestige of the brand they are available in most eyewear shops - one thing that I thought was quite funny was a couple of months ago I drove past an independent eyewear retailer in Manchester with a poster on their window advertising something like 50% off clearance Lindberg frames which is unthinkable really for this tier of frame. Something must be going very wrong over there and it would be interesting to get an inside view on how much control Kering has over operations these days since the acquisition. Having said that although I agree with your choices I don't necessarily agree with the reasoning. Dita in my mind are overrated because of their popularity and their garbage customer service. Whenever someone on an eyewear forum asks for recommendations for a high quality eyewear brand Dita seems to be the go-to answer and that's the overrated part for me. I don't care that they are derivative because I think they offer a vastly wider selection than Cazal and as a result they do both the low-key look and the edgier look better than Cazal. An extremely underrated aspect of the Dita brand is that since they have so many frame models it's possible to really nail down the details of what you want, take for example the standard Flight Seven aviator, off the top of my head there is also the Midnight Special and the Alkamx which are more or less the same frame but with minor differences in terms of curvature, temple design etc. Gives the customer a level of choice that is beyond anything I've seen from any other brand. FWIW I figured it would be interesting to share some overrated/underrated picks of my own and any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated! Overrated - Ray Ban, without doubt THE most overrated brand by a country mile since they stand alone in terms of mass market appeal where the mass market genuinely believes that they are the best quality eyewear brand. - Masunaga, carries a godly reputation in the Asian market in particular which carries over into whatever places stock them in the UK/US but their designs haven't really progressed with the times and I personally find them extremely boring with a severe lack of choice. For someone who prefers an oversized look for example, they have nothing. They are actually one of my favourite brands simply because of their background and prestige in my homeland yet I don't own a single pair. - Maui Jim, bang average frames with top-tier lenses. Their reputation is built upon wiping the floor with the likes of Ray Ban in the non-prescription market yet for a sizeable portion of users who want prescription sunglasses, their prices skyrocket into the luxury tier where they don't really belong. Underrated - Randolph Engineering, I've never actually seen one myself but everything I have read/seen/heard suggests that their build quality is really good, they use high quality materials like 23k gold plated titanium, they are cheaper than Maui Jim, yet they are frequently compared alongside your bog standard Luxottica brands like Ray Ban and Persol. - a whole bunch of other Japanese brands manufactured in Fukui/Sabae. There are loads. Every now and again I come across another brand that I've never heard of. It is my dream to take like £10k or so on a trip there and go on a shopping spree xD

I agree with your point that OP, Lindberg and Dita give the illusion of exclusivity. I also agree that MJ are probably overrated. I mean, I advocate for them as they are really good, but I've been selling them for over 10 years and never been tempted to buy a pair myself. I think that says a lot. You are right as well about the Japanese brands - I'm having a hard time trying to decide which one to stock! As for Masunaga, what do you think of Matsuda by comparison? And Akoni, who have been referenced elsewhere in the comments?
@@thespectaclefactory I love Matsuda, I think they do the intricate engravings on metalwork better than anyone else. Designs are a bit out there though, so haven't come across one that I'd be comfortable wearing on a regular basis unfortunately. Akoni I am not familiar with, I've heard the name but never come across any stockists before so can't comment. Two brands that I'd be interested in seeing more of in this country are Yellows Plus and H-Fusion. I feel like they are very similar in design and detailing to Masunaga but at a lower price point.
@@thespectaclefactorySorry to barge in on the conversation, but I heard “Akoni” and had to comment! I really like the brand. If DITA is seen as derivative of Cazal, then Akoni is derivative of DITA. But that’s no surprise since the company is made up of several influential former DITA members (including the DITA founders themselves), so the design sensibilities will be very similar. I really enjoy their stuff and count the Akoni Swift as part of my rotation. I still prefer DITA personally, but they’re one brand (along with Maybach) that’s ready to explode.
Great Video Robert. For someone like me that was recently introduce to Lindberg I purchased 2 frames. Although I love them, but maybe pushed into them because my local opticians does not have a great selection. And how they can justify to charge £530 for a frame is beyond me. One does not have to buy of course. Everything you say in this video is 100% true. If I may, I would go as far to say that you are doing a great service to the Industry. You are the pinnacle and one of the important reference for anyone looking to extend their knowledge in eye wear . Your great advice has helped me enormously. Well.. they use Mazzucchelli acetate. And made in China doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad quality-depending on the factory the build of an eyeglass frame can actually fluctuate. Same thing with the factories in Italy. Can’t say their frames are top quality, but it’s not crappy either. They aren’t as expensive as JJM frames anyway.
@@willk9854 Good points, they have had the same factory in China for 50 years which is also something to consider. I ended up getting the TINIF frames, loving them and they are built like a tank.
Well, one thing I respect DITA for is their exceptional feel of the edge, if I may put it this way. Cazals, that were featured here is unwearable for most people. Yes, Snoop Dog would pull them off, but not many others. DITA, on the other hand, they're quite bold in design but still I can wear them. Combined with nice details like their nose-pads and colourways, what more could you ask for?

I always enjoy your opinion on things because the ideas are so well expressed and presented! I can’t say I agree with most of the opinions, especially concerning DITA, but they are interesting opinions nevertheless. For instance the idea that DITA is derivative of Cazal. Isn’t all eyewear designs derivative or influenced by something that came previously? Certainly so. DITA is influenced by Cazal as many brands are influenced by the very creative Cari Zalloni, but that’s like saying all sunglasses are derivative from the very first ones including the first aviators. If that’s the view, then 99.99% of eyewear is derivative, led by brands such as Barton Perreira, Garrett Leight and that ilk. Unlike most brands, DITA has a reason for this influence; they actually teamed up with Cazal in 2007/2008 to collab on the re-release of the 902s. I don’t think many remember this point. They then took the influence from that collaboration and shaped it in their own direction. The Grandmaster and Grand Evo series are amazing and show their own distinct design language while also merging their love of Cazal. I don’t think many eyewear aficionados will mistake the DITA design language from Cazal’s. It would be a long discussion regarding the quality of DITA’s acetate models compared to other acetate eyewear in the industry, since DITA’s acetate models vary wildly. However, DITA’s at the top of their game when it comes to titanium; their investment in their own factory and move to be more vertically integrated just makes them even more respectable. I wear titanium models from DITA, JMM, Matsuda, Chrome Hearts, Cartier and many other brands as part of my rotation on a regular basis, and DITA’s always has my preference. Sure, there are a handful of pairs that are highly overrated such as the Flight 006, but there are many others that are of superior quality such as the Lindstrum and United.
Thank you so much for a very interesting contribution! Food for thought. I knew about past collaborations... but it's now 2023. So 15 years since 2008 and they are still doing the same thing. On one hand, it's great to have principles and your own design language. I just wish more people considered Cazal. But I think Dita carries a better name nowadays and maybe that's what I object to. I respectfully disagree that they are top tier for titanium. But you are clearly very knowledgeable and perhaps I'm missing something. Based on your collection, I would really encourage you to try a Robert la Roche titanium. I'd be glad to make them for you!
Since you are very knowledgable, what do you think of the Dita LXN-Evo or the new Raketo limited edition? Always loved Dita's glasses "shape, quality, craftsmanship, mix of colors" it looks and feels elegant.
@@amazoner0cks The LXN-Evo is amazing. It is an incredibly well-designed frame that wears so well. The use of acetate makes the colours pop. I would highly recommend this frame to anyone. I am less enthused about the Raketo, unfortunately. While it retains Dita’s high level of quality, it doesn’t wear well and looks a bit odd IMO, at least on my face. I always like when Dita does something different and incorporates industrial elements into their glasses, but I don’t think it worked on the Raketo.

Knew Lucas de Staël is most underrated! Really hope can get myself a pair but is a bit too pricey for me and is technically IMPOSSIBLE to get in Malaysia, but damn they really looks super great!
Thanks to you I have two JF Rey frames that I love! My main one is the 2899 and I love it! So sturdy compared to anything else I’ve owned, took some adjustment to get comfortable but they’re great!

I absolutely love my Lindbergs but I do agree with you too. It was my first pair and the quality was the best of the best at the time (10 years ago) but lacks variety if you’re after something different. Would you ever review or comment on Theo’s?
I would love to see a video on the recommended frames for brides. Some cannot wear contacts and it is very difficult to find a feminine formal pair of glasses that go with the bride and/or formal aesthetic.
The Flair 'Art Couture' range is ideal for lots of brides - they are rimless but with gemstones and white or yellow gold, so they are more like jewellery for the face.
The Lucas de Stael frames are nice but how well will they stand up to heavy daily use, hair dye running down the face like Rudi Guliani, sweat etc? Seems like something to keep as a second or third pair rather than a daily beater.
I wasn't triggered. I wasn't offended. Even if I were, it's a first world problem compared to the horrors of what's happening in the world right now. I can appreciate Lucas de Stael but I can see why they aren't more popular. Leather, stone, and wood are exotic materials to use for glasses. Some people would see them as over-the-top fashion, perhaps too mannered. Lucas de Stael is difficult for me to wrap my head around but logically, so-called "acetate" is really just a form of plastic, and should be more foreign to our sensibilities than natural materials. Goes to show you how disconnected we are with nature. I think it would be interesting to order Lucas de Stael eyewear with real glass lenses, not a smidgeon of plastic anywhere. All natural and pure. They wouldn't be my go-to primary frames, however. Perhaps third in the line behind others. I'm looking for my a new primary pair of frames. Thanks to you, I've been narrowing down my choices and I think I might pull the trigger on Masunaga Chord D titanium frames as my primary glasses. I think that when choosing a brand, it's important to look at their entire line of glasses and see if the brand fits your needs. I've looked at old and new Masunaga and I could build an entire collection with just their glasses. Classic and brilliantly made. I even want to try real glass lenses in the Chord D. One thing's for sure. The last two weeks I've been combing through eyewear store after eyewear store here in NYC. I've visited more than 10 different stores and not one has to offer what you have to offer. No one examines frames like you do. Lenses are an afterthought. They will sell you the most expensive lenses but won't tell you why they fit the your needs. I'm not sure that the product you're paying for is actually what you're getting. Some shops offer photochromatic options but they won't help customers design their glasses to the level you do. You're a decade ahead of everyone else. The Spectacle Factory must open up shop in NYC. I know some really great areas of the city I'd be happy to show you guys.
Robert, man, YOU alone have got me interested sunglasses. I didn't know anything about the eyewear industry. I've learned so much from your videos. Keep it up dawg! I've been going recently to check out sunglasses at different stores and every sales person keeps pushing their sunglasses on me and tell me how high quality their sunglasses are (such as Oliver Peoples, Ray ban etc.) They actually tell me that Oliver Peoples are some of the best in the world and the ones I like have price tags that are $550 - $700. So now I'm confused. Should I buy them at that price just cause I like their styling (Oliver sun model) or keep searching for better ones?
I love Dita frames but you’re totally right, the quality isn’t there. I once falsely accused an authorized retailer of selling fakes because I refused to believe believe that Dita’s Heartbreaker frames were soooo flimsy. I made a trip to a flagship store and imagine my shock that they really are flimsy! (“Unexpectedly lightweight” the sales associate called it).

@@thespectaclefactory Small sample sizes to be fair. The Dita Statesman Six that I owned for a brief period last year was the most solid feeling frame I've ever owned, even including the Chrome Hearts I have now for twice the price. Although I have also come across Dita frames which were a lot less sturdy. And I'd say also that for the average consumer without the experience of someone like yourself, it can be difficult to tell the difference between flimsy like Ray Ban and "flimsy" like Reykjavik Eyes.
@@thespectaclefactory I would respectfully disagree. Personally have had many Ditas and have been wearing them everyday for 5+ years. Sequoias, Mach 5s, Flight 5s, and 7s. Rock solid. Beautiful designs. I also have other frames from JMM, Lindberg, and Shilouettes to compare with. Now you can find basic floppy hinges on Shilouettes but not in my experience on Ditas. Lindberg's acetate can't take a beating like Ditas do. Have you actually owned any DITAs? On what are your observations about Dita's quality based on?
I had a pair of Modo years ago... and yes the quality is really good. The particular frame didn't fit my face. I think I still have that frame, not sure. 🤔 My collection has grown a lot since I've had them. Cartier is numero uno, no brainer. I've been really into vintage Cazal and vintage Jean Paul Gaultier lately. Sama is a newer and really eclectic and vibrant brand.

I don't know... I'm failing find a frame I like as much as the Lindberg N.O.W. TITANIUM 6577, which isn't a frameless design but I do feel it is unique yet simple and minimalist. It has the cool flat titanium temples that, from the side, look very thin but have more substance to them that an actual thin temple because of that horizontal flat design to them. Also, tons of customization options as far colors and sizing.
I'm glad you talked about Lindberg, hyped indeed! 7yrs ago I was over them until I learnt about other brands doing better with better value for price. I would go for those Modos, they look unisex 🙈
Lindberg have declined since they became part of Kering group but if I really like the Lindberg Air Titanium Rim(without inserts etc). They are very simple and extremely comfortable as they are only made from Titanium wire with silicone nose pads and coated at the end of the temples(again only with silicone). Sadly the choice in that range isn’t what it used to be. If you could tell a range that has as simple a construction and as thin a temple over the ears I’d be happy!
Super interesting! I am a simple customer. Anything with a cool mirror I will buy! Generally, is a silver mirror too flashy compared to blue or gold, in your opinion or are they all about the same? The ones in the video look awesome. Totally.
I’ve bought 2 Lindberg glasses and I can’t imagine going for another frame. They are so light, and wonderful and they don’t change shape over time. This makes them just unparalleled for me.
@@thespectaclefactory In the Netherlands, they almost don't exist. I have tried them in another country though, but I keep coming back to Lindberg because their collection is really classical and quite customisable.
On my glasses journey I’ve been from $39 glasses to Lindberg. Had a few Oliver Peoples too. Here in the states it’s difficult to find anything other than Luxotica - that being said I am happy to have found your channel. Currently on a pair of Lindberg Ti AIR rims. The very light weight nature of them appeals to me. And the construction has suited me for the past couple of years. I’ve never had a pair of glasses that can feel the same day in and day out. All my previous glasses have had hinges (spring or not) go loose or tight. Screws back out and temples fall out. Is there any brand out there that is producing glasses without screws and have a rim?

Guess im a bad egg for ordering the oakley sway bar half rimless lol sorry I don’t keep up with glasses just know that lux pretty much owns everything i just like the feel of sway bar when i tried it light weight n comfortable specially compared to my Versace glasses
Ray ban are not my style, I have had Carrera and Silhouette and also like Prada ones. Not certain about Gucci but they sell lots of watches as well. My father likes Silhouette and uses them but got me some he likes them and they’re ok. They give a rimless vibe but they may not be very strong and since they are delicate they can break if you are careless with them. Carrera looks more sporty than geeky almost but their frames have plenty of style. Not sure about other brands. The top three I tended to like. There are lots of brands. Though this is not about watches (I now recently got a smartwatch but classic watches Tag Herero and Omega has nice ones as well as Seiko but the Tag was my favourite as some companies that make eyewear also do watches.
I was wondering what your thoughts were on Bevel Titanium frames. Are they Overrated or Underrated or just Rightrated? Does the quality justify the high price tag?

The problem is, if you notice, a lot of men don’t wear glasses that fit their face, and it’s not necessarily their fault. Eye wear manufacturers typically don’t make frames large enough for most men’s faces. For example, I need a 150 temple, yet if I go with a pair that have a 150 temple, the glasses are too wide for my face. Years ago, you could custom order glasses, with a longer temple, yet not have them too wide.
Where I live working as an optician for some reason everyone wants Ray Ban glasses. I think Ray Ban has to be the most overrated glasses as the style never changes and the quality is most definitely not there anymore as most I see are not even made in Italy anymore, but In China. I have a pair of Renato Belastra frames manufactured through Modo made in Italy and they are holding strong 8 years later and are the only glasses I have been wearing. I just purchased some titanium blended glasses from Modo and I love how light weight the frames are and the quality is definitely there. It is a fun design as I don’t have to compromise the nose area of plastic frames that I prefer to get a titanium frame.

Hi Robert. My present pair of glasses feel heavy on my nose, so I'm thinking about getting new ones. What sort of glasses will you describe as "lightweight"? Is a 15-gram titanium frame comfortable to wear?
I have two pairs of Tom Ford eyeglass in titanium.... I'm pretty sure that the 20 gram weight is worth the lenses. The frames alone shouldn't and aren't not typically made beyond 5 grams. I don't even feel them on my face.
I kind of see why Lucas de Stael aren’t so popular, I have not seen a single pair that you’ve shown in any of your videos which have appealed to me. I don’t really care for stone or leather as a material for my glasses. Maybe others think the same?
Obviously we all have our own tastes. I understand they aren't for everyone, but they should definitely be in the conversation with the top tier luxury eyewear brands IMO.
Totally ugly designs. If you want French, quality, and sophisticated go with Maison Bonnet, which are indeed beautiful and in different class altogether.
Any way I can authenticate some Barton Perreira sunglasses? They’re the Luxon, a folding pair, that I’ve got and I’m just not sure. I bought them for very cheap.

I LOVE the Dita's Flight 006 (EDITH) model. I don't have them, but I do think that the $600+ dollar price for them is ridiculous. I found an inspired model made from titanium at $130 dollars, which I believe it is an excellent price. And the price at which Dita should sell them.... $600 dollars is ridiculous.
This is from the GL website: "It is important that we manufacture our eyewear ethically and at a fair price without sacrificing quality; this is the reason we are proud to be made in China". BP are significantly higher quality (as they should be for the price difference). If you want that same kind of look on a budget, I recommend Anglo American Optical

Oliver Peoples fan here. I bought 6 pairs (both glasses and sunglasses). I love the vintage aura and aesthetics the the brand exudes. It makes you feel like you are buying vintage eyewear. However, I do think it is extremely overpriced. Pieces that sell on their websites for $400+ can be found at smaller retailers for less than $200. But it is also a thrilling experience hunting for the pair that you like within your budget. One brand that I think is very underappreciated is Serengeti. Their sunglasses lens are so effective in blocking light and also giving aesthetically pleasing colors. I am just surprised at how good their lens are and how I have never heard of this brand before.
I also like the aesthetic, and I like the brand. It's just that everything the brand stands for now is kind of hollow, sadly. I definitely don't want to make you feel bad about your eyewear, because OP is 100x cooler than the likes of Ray Ban etc, but you should definitely try a Barton Perreira one day. Serengeti are awesome for sure. I just don't know what is going on with that brand because it always feels like they are struggling for market share vs Maui Jim.
Honestly now owning 3 pairs of DITA their quality is dropping sad to see it. My first pair the mach 6 was built like a tank super durable lenses, gold color was vibrant hard case. Second pair Alkamx, cut costs on packaging weaker case, flimsy terrible temples that would scratch the lenses in their leather roll up case, less durable lenses (scratch easily and ARC would bleed) Then my last pair the midnight specials omg they look amazing but attention to detail sucked the temples had a terrible transition from black to gold, came scratched, and packaging is even worse. Now all DITA's come in a microfiber cloth case except ther epiluxury. like WTF $1200 glasses in a microfiber cloth case u drop them and your glasses finish is destroyed. So yea in the past i would disagree now i agree with you. For reference my first pair was bought 5 years ago and my last bought around a year ago. But I like their designs more than Cazal even though they do take inspiration from them which i believe they collabed. Lastly I work in a fabrication industry, so I would say it depends on the person who makes your frames has a huge influence on the quality of your glasses some people are better than others at fabrication so it's possible DITA lost good frame fabricators over the years or I had less experienced guys who worked on my last 2.
That's a great point! Master crasftsmen are hard to come by, especially nowadays. And thanks for seeing this from an objective perspective. So many people are biased because of brand loyalty, but I try really hard to be fair to all brands on our channel.
Hi sir ^^ Do you think getting a Barton Perreira's avtak or royale sunglasses is better choice than getting a Flight series or Mach series from Dita? Because Im considering to get a aviator style sunglasses in this summer. Quality of titanium is better for BP??
I dont rate brands im just looking for sth that fits and doesnt feel or look cheap. Oliver peoples can be found for way less than Barton Parreira and theyre still well made. Given you find a frame that works which isnt always easy
I think it's also important to be ethical with our purchasing decisions, and buying from BP (an independently owned company run by eyewear enthusiasts) is more ethical in my opinion than buying from Luxottica (who actually make more profit from the transaction, even though OP sells for less)

Either way even if i agree in theory, if im on a budget i try to not give in to the illusion of thinking i am changing the economy with my one pair of glassese every couple of years. In my opinion Mykita canot be better/as good as Lindberg in term of quality for a minimalist look, especially the Lite collection which is really unreliable... The thin spring mechanism hinges are terrible. As an optician I have seen too many springs been broken in less than a year of use. I have SO much less after-sale services with Lindberg (Rim, thintanium,strip,acetanium...). Otherwise the other Mykita collections are pretty ok.
I agree. Also those flexible temples are a pain in the ass for curve. When I find a frame for someone with the right fit, still because of the flexibility it results in a negative curve.
The reasons Lindberg beats those other rimless glasses shown: Lindberg mounts well with all lenses. High minus? Check! High plus? Yup! As soon as you start mounting things on the front and depending on bushings you’re going to run into fit issues and the glasses are gonna look stupid. Second, Lindberg has multiple temple lengths. Multiple nose pads. Tons of colors. Four sizes of bridges. Basically infinite customization. I’ve made a loooot of rimless glasses. The only thing that holds up in comparison are the sturdy Cartiers of old.
Not offended at all, on the contrary! Finally, now I know what you think of Lindberg! Anyway: at least Lindberg has the sexiest male model on Earth (the one with the scar on his face...) and that must count for something at least 😇
I’ve had JF Rey frames probably before you were born. Jacques Marie Mage are amazing, as are Dita, Masunaga, Rodenstock, Moscot, Cutler & Gross (vintage UK made), which I have all. To common Persols, Vintage RayBans (again prior to your birth), to Vuarnets. And I love my Dita’s. I’ve worn prior to that Hollywood nobody. And they have been the best made, strongest, overall amazing glasses. I’ll stay with Dita amongst others. Preaching is something Millenials and Gen Z do best. Yes, I’m old at the very, very tip end of Gen X, but I know my arse from my elbow.

Recently i bought a japanese handmade acetate but i was a bit disapointed to find that the lifespan of this frames is around 5 to 10 years. Can you tell me if that is true or a good acetate frame can stand a lifetime?
I think your expectations are unrealistic. 5-10 years is really good and most frames don't last more than a few years. Why would you even want to have the same glasses longer than that? Times change and it's fun choosing a new improved style.

Nothing over rated about DITA IMO. Great designs, really good build quality and can be had for a decent discount if you know where to look. Their hinges are some of the best I’ve seen and I own Cartier frames too, for reference. Not going to apologize for loving and owning a few pairs.
They're in the same league most fashion designer brands (Prada, Dior, Chanel, etc). Definitely not the same level as his most-mentioned boutique brands

Thanks for the great video Rob. It's always refreshing to see someone who actually knows what the words underrated and overrated mean, since for much of the internet nowadays overrated = bad and anything decent is automatically underrated. I thought it was interesting to see the correlation in your picks between a brand's "rating" and their exclusivity. OP being a lux brand is obviously everywhere but at the start of my eyewear journey I was a bit surprised to see just how easy it was to get hold of Dita glasses, not only are they stocked by seemingly every eyewear store but also in department stores like Selfridges sitting alongside the common fashion brands, usually next to Dolce and Gabbana if it's in alphabetical order :) And Lindberg as well, for the prestige of the brand they are available in most eyewear shops - one thing that I thought was quite funny was a couple of months ago I drove past an independent eyewear retailer in Manchester with a poster on their window advertising something like 50% off clearance Lindberg frames which is unthinkable really for this tier of frame. Something must be going very wrong over there and it would be interesting to get an inside view on how much control Kering has over operations these days since the acquisition.
Having said that although I agree with your choices I don't necessarily agree with the reasoning. Dita in my mind are overrated because of their popularity and their garbage customer service. Whenever someone on an eyewear forum asks for recommendations for a high quality eyewear brand Dita seems to be the go-to answer and that's the overrated part for me. I don't care that they are derivative because I think they offer a vastly wider selection than Cazal and as a result they do both the low-key look and the edgier look better than Cazal. An extremely underrated aspect of the Dita brand is that since they have so many frame models it's possible to really nail down the details of what you want, take for example the standard Flight Seven aviator, off the top of my head there is also the Midnight Special and the Alkamx which are more or less the same frame but with minor differences in terms of curvature, temple design etc. Gives the customer a level of choice that is beyond anything I've seen from any other brand.
FWIW I figured it would be interesting to share some overrated/underrated picks of my own and any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated!
Overrated
- Ray Ban, without doubt THE most overrated brand by a country mile since they stand alone in terms of mass market appeal where the mass market genuinely believes that they are the best quality eyewear brand.
- Masunaga, carries a godly reputation in the Asian market in particular which carries over into whatever places stock them in the UK/US but their designs haven't really progressed with the times and I personally find them extremely boring with a severe lack of choice. For someone who prefers an oversized look for example, they have nothing. They are actually one of my favourite brands simply because of their background and prestige in my homeland yet I don't own a single pair.
- Maui Jim, bang average frames with top-tier lenses. Their reputation is built upon wiping the floor with the likes of Ray Ban in the non-prescription market yet for a sizeable portion of users who want prescription sunglasses, their prices skyrocket into the luxury tier where they don't really belong.
Underrated
- Randolph Engineering, I've never actually seen one myself but everything I have read/seen/heard suggests that their build quality is really good, they use high quality materials like 23k gold plated titanium, they are cheaper than Maui Jim, yet they are frequently compared alongside your bog standard Luxottica brands like Ray Ban and Persol.
- a whole bunch of other Japanese brands manufactured in Fukui/Sabae. There are loads. Every now and again I come across another brand that I've never heard of. It is my dream to take like £10k or so on a trip there and go on a shopping spree xD

I also agree that MJ are probably overrated. I mean, I advocate for them as they are really good, but I've been selling them for over 10 years and never been tempted to buy a pair myself. I think that says a lot.
You are right as well about the Japanese brands - I'm having a hard time trying to decide which one to stock!
As for Masunaga, what do you think of Matsuda by comparison? And Akoni, who have been referenced elsewhere in the comments?
@@thespectaclefactory I love Matsuda, I think they do the intricate engravings on metalwork better than anyone else. Designs are a bit out there though, so haven't come across one that I'd be comfortable wearing on a regular basis unfortunately. Akoni I am not familiar with, I've heard the name but never come across any stockists before so can't comment. Two brands that I'd be interested in seeing more of in this country are Yellows Plus and H-Fusion. I feel like they are very similar in design and detailing to Masunaga but at a lower price point.
@@thespectaclefactorySorry to barge in on the conversation, but I heard “Akoni” and had to comment! I really like the brand. If DITA is seen as derivative of Cazal, then Akoni is derivative of DITA. But that’s no surprise since the company is made up of several influential former DITA members (including the DITA founders themselves), so the design sensibilities will be very similar. I really enjoy their stuff and count the Akoni Swift as part of my rotation. I still prefer DITA personally, but they’re one brand (along with Maybach) that’s ready to explode.
Great Video Robert. For someone like me that was recently introduce to Lindberg I purchased 2 frames. Although I love them, but maybe pushed into them because my local opticians does not have a great selection. And how they can justify to charge £530 for a frame is beyond me. One does not have to buy of course. Everything you say in this video is 100% true. If I may, I would go as far to say that you are doing a great service to the Industry. Well.. they use Mazzucchelli acetate. And made in China doesn’t necessarily mean it’s bad quality-depending on the factory the build of an eyeglass frame can actually fluctuate. Same thing with the factories in Italy.
Can’t say their frames are top quality, but it’s not crappy either. They aren’t as expensive as JJM frames anyway.
@@willk9854 Good points, they have had the same factory in China for 50 years which is also something to consider. I ended up getting the TINIF frames, loving them and they are built like a tank.
Well, one thing I respect DITA for is their exceptional feel of the edge, if I may put it this way. Cazals, that were featured here is unwearable for most people. Yes, Snoop Dog would pull them off, but not many others. DITA, on the other hand, they're quite bold in design but still I can wear them. Combined with nice details like their nose-pads and colourways, what more could you ask for?
Cazal are iconic. People get stopped in the street when wearing them.

I always enjoy your opinion on things because the ideas are so well expressed and presented! I can’t say I agree with most of the opinions, especially concerning DITA, but they are interesting opinions nevertheless. For instance the idea that DITA is derivative of Cazal. Isn’t all eyewear designs derivative or influenced by something that came previously? Certainly so. DITA is influenced by Cazal as many brands are influenced by the very creative Cari Zalloni, but that’s like saying all sunglasses are derivative from the very first ones including the first aviators. If that’s the view, then 99.99% of eyewear is derivative, led by brands such as Barton Perreira, Garrett Leight and that ilk.
Unlike most brands, DITA has a reason for this influence; they actually teamed up with Cazal in 2007/2008 to collab on the re-release of the 902s. I don’t think many remember this point. They then took the influence from that collaboration and shaped it in their own direction. The Grandmaster and Grand Evo series are amazing and show their own distinct design language while also merging their love of Cazal. I don’t think many eyewear aficionados will mistake the DITA design language from Cazal’s.
It would be a long discussion regarding the quality of DITA’s acetate models compared to other acetate eyewear in the industry, since DITA’s acetate models vary wildly. However, DITA’s at the top of their game when it comes to titanium; their investment in their own factory and move to be more vertically integrated just makes them even more respectable. I wear titanium models from DITA, JMM, Matsuda, Chrome Hearts, Cartier and many other brands as part of my rotation on a regular basis, and DITA’s always has my preference. Sure, there are a handful of pairs that are highly overrated such as the Flight 006, but there are many others that are of superior quality such as the Lindstrum and United.

I knew about past collaborations... but it's now 2023. So 15 years since 2008 and they are still doing the same thing.
On one hand, it's great to have principles and your own design language. I just wish more people considered Cazal. But I think Dita carries a better name nowadays and maybe that's what I object to.
I respectfully disagree that they are top tier for titanium. But you are clearly very knowledgeable and perhaps I'm missing something.
Based on your collection, I would really encourage you to try a Robert la Roche titanium. I'd be glad to make them for you!
Since you are very knowledgable, what do you think of the Dita LXN-Evo or the new Raketo limited edition?
Always loved Dita's glasses "shape, quality, craftsmanship, mix of colors" it looks and feels elegant.
@@amazoner0cks The LXN-Evo is amazing. It is an incredibly well-designed frame that wears so well. The use of acetate makes the colours pop. I would highly recommend this frame to anyone.
I am less enthused about the Raketo, unfortunately. While it retains Dita’s high level of quality, it doesn’t wear well and looks a bit odd IMO, at least on my face. I always like when Dita does something different and incorporates industrial elements into their glasses, but I don’t think it worked on the Raketo.

Knew Lucas de Staël is most underrated! Really hope can get myself a pair but is a bit too pricey for me and is technically IMPOSSIBLE to get in Malaysia, but damn they really looks super great!
They are expensive, but last for so long. And they only look better the longer you own them, too.
Thanks to you I have two JF Rey frames that I love! My main one is the 2899 and I love it! So sturdy compared to anything else I’ve owned, took some adjustment to get comfortable but they’re great!

I absolutely love my Lindbergs but I do agree with you too. It was my first pair and the quality was the best of the best at the time (10 years ago) but lacks variety if you’re after something different. Would you ever review or comment on Theo’s?

I would love to see a video on the recommended frames for brides. Some cannot wear contacts and it is very difficult to find a feminine formal pair of glasses that go with the bride and/or formal aesthetic.
The Flair 'Art Couture' range is ideal for lots of brides - they are rimless but with gemstones and white or yellow gold, so they are more like jewellery for the face.
Try Caviar eyewear.
Caviar eyewear has crystals and some beautiful eyewear for brides.

The Lucas de Stael frames are nice but how well will they stand up to heavy daily use, hair dye running down the face like Rudi Guliani, sweat etc? Seems like something to keep as a second or third pair rather than a daily beater.

I wasn't triggered. I wasn't offended. Even if I were, it's a first world problem compared to the horrors of what's happening in the world right now. I can appreciate Lucas de Stael but I can see why they aren't more popular. Leather, stone, and wood are exotic materials to use for glasses. Some people would see them as over-the-top fashion, perhaps too mannered. Lucas de Stael is difficult for me to wrap my head around but logically, so-called "acetate" is really just a form of plastic, and should be more foreign to our sensibilities than natural materials. Goes to show you how disconnected we are with nature. I think it would be interesting to order Lucas de Stael eyewear with real glass lenses, not a smidgeon of plastic anywhere. All natural and pure. They wouldn't be my go-to primary frames, however. Perhaps third in the line behind others. I'm looking for my a new primary pair of frames. Thanks to you, I've been narrowing down my choices and I think I might pull the trigger on Masunaga Chord D titanium frames as my primary glasses. I think that when choosing a brand, it's important to look at their entire line of glasses and see if the brand fits your needs. I've looked at old and new Masunaga and I could build an entire collection with just their glasses. Classic and brilliantly made. I even want to try real glass lenses in the Chord D. One thing's for sure. The last two weeks I've been combing through eyewear store after eyewear store here in NYC. I've visited more than 10 different stores and not one has to offer what you have to offer. No one examines frames like you do. Lenses are an afterthought. They will sell you the most expensive lenses but won't tell you why they fit the your needs. I'm not sure that the product you're paying for is actually what you're getting. Some shops offer photochromatic options but they won't help customers design their glasses to the level you do. You're a decade ahead of everyone else. The Spectacle Factory must open up shop in NYC. I know some really great areas of the city I'd be happy to show you guys.
Robert, man, YOU alone have got me interested sunglasses. I didn't know anything about the eyewear industry. I've learned so much from your videos. Keep it up dawg! I've been going recently to check out sunglasses at different stores and every sales person keeps pushing their sunglasses on me and tell me how high quality their sunglasses are (such as Oliver Peoples, Ray ban etc.) They actually tell me that Oliver Peoples are some of the best in the world and the ones I like have price tags that are $550 - $700. So now I'm confused. Should I buy them at that price just cause I like their styling (Oliver sun model) or keep searching for better ones?
I love Dita frames but you’re totally right, the quality isn’t there. I once falsely accused an authorized retailer of selling fakes because I refused to believe believe that Dita’s Heartbreaker frames were soooo flimsy. I made a trip to a flagship store and imagine my shock that they really are flimsy! (“Unexpectedly lightweight” the sales associate called it).

The Dita Statesman Six that I owned for a brief period last year was the most solid feeling frame I've ever owned, even including the Chrome Hearts I have now for twice the price. Although I have also come across Dita frames which were a lot less sturdy. And I'd say also that for the average consumer without the experience of someone like yourself, it can be difficult to tell the difference between flimsy like Ray Ban and "flimsy" like Reykjavik Eyes.
@@thespectaclefactory I would respectfully disagree. Personally have had many Ditas and have been wearing them everyday for 5+ years. Sequoias, Mach 5s, Flight 5s, and 7s. Rock solid. Beautiful designs. I also have other frames from JMM, Lindberg, and Shilouettes to compare with. Now you can find basic floppy hinges on Shilouettes but not in my experience on Ditas. Lindberg's acetate can't take a beating like Ditas do. Have you actually owned any DITAs? On what are your observations about Dita's quality based on?
I had a pair of Modo years ago... and yes the quality is really good. The particular frame didn't fit my face. I think I still have that frame, not sure. 🤔 My collection has grown a lot since I've had them. Cartier is numero uno, no brainer. I've been really into vintage Cazal and vintage Jean Paul Gaultier lately. Sama is a newer and really eclectic and vibrant brand.

I don't know... I'm failing find a frame I like as much as the Lindberg N.O.W. TITANIUM 6577, which isn't a frameless design but I do feel it is unique yet simple and minimalist. It has the cool flat titanium temples that, from the side, look very thin but have more substance to them that an actual thin temple because of that horizontal flat design to them. Also, tons of customization options as far colors and sizing.
I'm glad you talked about Lindberg, hyped indeed! 7yrs ago I was over them until I learnt about other brands doing better with better value for price.

Absolutely. Modo are cooler and less expensive
Lindberg have declined since they became part of Kering group but if I really like the Lindberg Air Titanium Rim(without inserts etc). They are very simple and extremely comfortable as they are only made from Titanium wire with silicone nose pads and coated at the end of the temples(again only with silicone). Sadly the choice in that range isn’t what it used to be. If you could tell a range that has as simple a construction and as thin a temple over the ears I’d be happy!

I’ve bought 2 Lindberg glasses and I can’t imagine going for another frame. They are so light, and wonderful and they don’t change shape over time. This makes them just unparalleled for me.
You should try Reykjavik Eyes. Similar but even better.

On my glasses journey I’ve been from $39 glasses to Lindberg. Had a few Oliver Peoples too. Here in the states it’s difficult to find anything other than Luxotica - that being said I am happy to have found your channel.
Currently on a pair of Lindberg Ti AIR rims. The very light weight nature of them appeals to me. And the construction has suited me for the past couple of years. I’ve never had a pair of glasses that can feel the same day in and day out. All my previous glasses have had hinges (spring or not) go loose or tight. Screws back out and temples fall out.
Is there any brand out there that is producing glasses without screws and have a rim?

Guess im a bad egg for ordering the oakley sway bar half rimless lol sorry I don’t keep up with glasses just know that lux pretty much owns everything i just like the feel of sway bar when i tried it light weight n comfortable specially compared to my Versace glasses
I love Cutler & Gross frames have a number of them so well made an love the style.
They are a cool brand for sure
Ray ban are not my style, I have had Carrera and Silhouette and also like Prada ones. Not certain about Gucci but they sell lots of watches as well. My father likes Silhouette and uses them but got me some he likes them and they’re ok. They give a rimless vibe but they may not be very strong and since they are delicate they can break if you are careless with them. Carrera looks more sporty than geeky almost but their frames have plenty of style. Not sure about other brands. The top three I tended to like. There are lots of brands. Though this is not about watches (I now recently got a smartwatch but classic watches Tag Herero and Omega has nice ones as well as Seiko but the Tag was my favourite as some companies that make eyewear also do watches.
I was wondering what your thoughts were on Bevel Titanium frames. Are they Overrated or Underrated or just Rightrated? Does the quality justify the high price tag?
Bevel are good glasses but for me, Reykjavik Eyes frames are better and cost less!

The problem is, if you notice, a lot of men don’t wear glasses that fit their face, and it’s not necessarily their fault. Eye wear manufacturers typically don’t make frames large enough for most men’s faces. For example, I need a 150 temple, yet if I go with a pair that have a 150 temple, the glasses are too wide for my face. Years ago, you could custom order glasses, with a longer temple, yet not have them too wide.
What is your opinion on Linda Farrow? Are their made in Japan acetate models worth grabbing at 60-70% off?

Where I live working as an optician for some reason everyone wants Ray Ban glasses. I think Ray Ban has to be the most overrated glasses as the style never changes and the quality is most definitely not there anymore as most I see are not even made in Italy anymore, but In China. I have a pair of Renato Belastra frames manufactured through Modo made in Italy and they are holding strong 8 years later and are the only glasses I have been wearing. I just purchased some titanium blended glasses from Modo and I love how light weight the frames are and the quality is definitely there. It is a fun design as I don’t have to compromise the nose area of plastic frames that I prefer to get a titanium frame.
You're right that RB is trash. I've talked about it many times on this channel. Modo on the other hand, fantastic frames! Nice choice

Hi Robert. My present pair of glasses feel heavy on my nose, so I'm thinking about getting new ones. What sort of glasses will you describe as "lightweight"? Is a 15-gram titanium frame comfortable to wear?
I have two pairs of Tom Ford eyeglass in titanium.... I'm pretty sure that the 20 gram weight is worth the lenses. The frames alone shouldn't and aren't not typically made beyond 5 grams.

I kind of see why Lucas de Stael aren’t so popular, I have not seen a single pair that you’ve shown in any of your videos which have appealed to me. I don’t really care for stone or leather as a material for my glasses. Maybe others think the same?
yep.. Leather as a material for glasses actually puts me off and I would never even consider it.
Same! Leather in a hot place like Texas doesn't seem very appealing to me, also in the natural material eyewear, k think Rigards is the popular one.
Obviously we all have our own tastes. I understand they aren't for everyone, but they should definitely be in the conversation with the top tier luxury eyewear brands IMO.
Totally ugly designs. If you want French, quality, and sophisticated go with Maison Bonnet, which are indeed beautiful and in different class altogether.

I LOVE the Dita's Flight 006 (EDITH) model. I don't have them, but I do think that the $600+ dollar price for them is ridiculous.
I found an inspired model made from titanium at $130 dollars, which I believe it is an excellent price. And the price at which Dita should sell them.... $600 dollars is ridiculous.
Since I discovered Ovvo frames, no other frame exists. Feather-light, near indestructible, screwless, minimalist & stylish.
Ovvo are great, but Reykjavik Eyes are even better. I hope you're able to try a pair one day
How does Barton Perreira compare to Garret Leight? As they both have the OP association and but non-luxotica owned and made in Japan.
This is from the GL website: "It is important that we manufacture our eyewear ethically and at a fair price without sacrificing quality; this is the reason we are proud to be made in China". BP are significantly higher quality (as they should be for the price difference).
If you want that same kind of look on a budget, I recommend Anglo American Optical

Oliver Peoples fan here. I bought 6 pairs (both glasses and sunglasses). I love the vintage aura and aesthetics the the brand exudes. It makes you feel like you are buying vintage eyewear. However, I do think it is extremely overpriced. Pieces that sell on their websites for $400+ can be found at smaller retailers for less than $200. But it is also a thrilling experience hunting for the pair that you like within your budget. One brand that I think is very underappreciated is Serengeti. Their sunglasses lens are so effective in blocking light and also giving aesthetically pleasing colors. I am just surprised at how good their lens are and how I have never heard of this brand before.
I also like the aesthetic, and I like the brand. It's just that everything the brand stands for now is kind of hollow, sadly.
I definitely don't want to make you feel bad about your eyewear, because OP is 100x cooler than the likes of Ray Ban etc, but you should definitely try a Barton Perreira one day.
Serengeti are awesome for sure. I just don't know what is going on with that brand because it always feels like they are struggling for market share vs Maui Jim.

Would you ever do a review of a Japanese brand called OWNDAYS? They're very affordable but I think quite durable.
Honestly now owning 3 pairs of DITA their quality is dropping sad to see it. My first pair the mach 6 was built like a tank super durable lenses, gold color was vibrant hard case.
Second pair Alkamx, cut costs on packaging weaker case, flimsy terrible temples that would scratch the lenses in their leather roll up case, less durable lenses (scratch easily and ARC would bleed)
Then my last pair the midnight specials omg they look amazing but attention to detail sucked the temples had a terrible transition from black to gold, came scratched, and packaging is even worse.
Now all DITA's come in a microfiber cloth case except ther epiluxury. like WTF $1200 glasses in a microfiber cloth case u drop them and your glasses finish is destroyed.
So yea in the past i would disagree now i agree with you. For reference my first pair was bought 5 years ago and my last bought around a year ago. But I like their designs more than Cazal even though they do take inspiration from them which i believe they collabed.
Lastly I work in a fabrication industry, so I would say it depends on the person who makes your frames has a huge influence on the quality of your glasses some people are better than others at fabrication so it's possible DITA lost good frame fabricators over the years or I had less experienced guys who worked on my last 2.
That's a great point! Master crasftsmen are hard to come by, especially nowadays.
And thanks for seeing this from an objective perspective. So many people are biased because of brand loyalty, but I try really hard to be fair to all brands on our channel.

I dont rate brands im just looking for sth that fits and doesnt feel or look cheap. Oliver peoples can be found for way less than Barton Parreira and theyre still well made. Given you find a frame that works which isnt always easy
I think it's also important to be ethical with our purchasing decisions, and buying from BP (an independently owned company run by eyewear enthusiasts) is more ethical in my opinion than buying from Luxottica (who actually make more profit from the transaction, even though OP sells for less)

Either way even if i agree in theory, if im on a budget i try to not give in to the illusion of thinking i am changing the economy with my one pair of glassese every couple of years. In my opinion Mykita canot be better/as good as Lindberg in term of quality for a minimalist look, especially the Lite collection which is really unreliable... The thin spring mechanism hinges are terrible. As an optician I have seen too many springs been broken in less than a year of use. I have SO much less after-sale services with Lindberg (Rim, thintanium,strip,acetanium...). Otherwise the other Mykita collections are pretty ok.
I agree. Also those flexible temples are a pain in the ass for curve. When I find a frame for someone with the right fit, still because of the flexibility it results in a negative curve.

It's a brown 25% gradient with 10% rose at the bottom. I'd be glad to make it for you as it's quite challenging for most opticians

The reasons Lindberg beats those other rimless glasses shown:
Lindberg mounts well with all lenses. High minus? Check! High plus? Yup!
As soon as you start mounting things on the front and depending on bushings you’re going to run into fit issues and the glasses are gonna look stupid.
Second, Lindberg has multiple temple lengths. Multiple nose pads. Tons of colors. Four sizes of bridges. Basically infinite customization.
I’ve made a loooot of rimless glasses. The only thing that holds up in comparison are the sturdy Cartiers of old.
Not offended at all, on the contrary! Finally, now I know what you think of Lindberg! Anyway: at least Lindberg has the sexiest male model on Earth (the one with the scar on his face...) and that must count for something at least 😇

I’ve had JF Rey frames probably before you were born. Jacques Marie Mage are amazing, as are Dita, Masunaga, Rodenstock, Moscot, Cutler & Gross (vintage UK made), which I have all. To common Persols, Vintage RayBans (again prior to your birth), to Vuarnets. And I love my Dita’s. I’ve worn prior to that Hollywood nobody. And they have been the best made, strongest, overall amazing glasses. I’ll stay with Dita amongst others. Preaching is something Millenials and Gen Z do best. Yes, I’m old at the very, very tip end of Gen X, but I know my arse from my elbow.

Recently i bought a japanese handmade acetate but i was a bit disapointed to find that the lifespan of this frames is around 5 to 10 years. Can you tell me if that is true or a good acetate frame can stand a lifetime?
I think your expectations are unrealistic. 5-10 years is really good and most frames don't last more than a few years. Why would you even want to have the same glasses longer than that? Times change and it's fun choosing a new improved style.

Nothing over rated about DITA IMO. Great designs, really good build quality and can be had for a decent discount if you know where to look. Their hinges are some of the best I’ve seen and I own Cartier frames too, for reference.
