This was the last script Dwayne McDuffie wrote before his passing.
Favorite line is when Superman goes “why don’t I just move the earth” Batman “if we had a week I could list all the reasons that wouldn’t work. 😂
And that is definitely a callback to the old superfriends cartoon where superman does push the earth back into orbit.
The line for batman goes "even if we had a week I couldn't list all the reasons why that won't work"
the first one is, the sun is in a perfect position to not get freezed to death or blasted with radiation.
One of my favorite details is that despite Star Sapphire having a grudge against Green Lantern, her plan doesn't actually involve him dying. It shows that Carol on some level still cares about Hal.
Does it? There are so many instances in media about how death is a mercy. “Putting someone out of their misery” kind of thing. I’d argue that by allowing him to live but be in constant moral agony makes her the most sadistic of the Legion and shows just how much she despises him.
Contrary to that, the fact that Hal IS in agony over the “loss” of this other “Carol” who reminds him of his Carol, shows us just how much he regrets whatever he did to her and how much it probably weighs on him. The fact that Star Sapphire CAN’T see that is what I find truly heartbreaking.
It’s not her plan, it was Batman’s contingency plan.

I thought Star just wanted Hal to suffer not die. Not killing Hal doesn’t mean Star Cares for Hal
It’s not as good as Kyle’s blindness. Them using Hal over Kyle and Barry over Wally was a bad move.
I just love how Batman says his contigency IS the Justice League. It's so badass.
That's what he said, in his brain it's something like, "dude I'm just a very rich human"
But this whole movie proved that even if he did go rogue, he could still take down the Justice League. It's a pretty bad plan.

I don’t like that line, it’s not like the league together can’t take out any individual member Dave maybe Superman, even then just get a green rock we all know Batman has a surplus of and it’s fine. Just makes the other plans redundant.
I think that he means at the end of the day it’s a team working together that can defeat him. He can only handle individuals.
This is definitely one of my favorite DC animated films. I know you guys don't want to do tv series, but I'm gonna keep plugging Young Justice on here because I really think you'd enjoy it. It has one of the best Dick Graysons I've seen on screen and season 2 is one of the first on screen adaptations of Jaime Reyes blue beetle.
Maybe when they get through all of the DC animated films! There's still like, what, 10 left?

I fully agree what a show at the time the last season wasn’t very good but with the ending the show got in retrospect I think that makes it better
Originally this story is based on the comic Justice League Babel. Some things were different such as it being Ra's Al Ghul as the main villain, Flash was hit in the spine with a vibrating bullet that caused him to have seizures at super speed, Aquaman was given hydrophobia and some other changes to the story. Also, this movie had nothing to do with the crisis on two earth's. This was also another stand alone movie.
I feel the comic is superior to the movie.
Yes, the comic is fantastic! A fair bit more depth and development to the plot.
Tower of Babel
This was actually a sequel to Crisis on Two Earths. They just brought back the animated series cast and there is literally footage from Crisis on Two Earths in the opening. Dwayne McDuffie wrote both movies as well.
@@DanV900 its got different feel to it in terms of characters. At least it does for the Flash. The crisis on two earth's Flash had Wally's personality, but the Doom Flash was shown to be Barry Allen.
Considering what happened in the Injustice reality, Batman has the right idea for having contingency plans for the Justice League
Maybe, but there are several problems: He didn't tell the other he had them, he exploited their trust to make them, and he didn't properly secure them. Not to mention, he decided to do it unilaterally.

@@ThePenpachiNot really. He didn't need to tell them the details, but he could have informed them about the plans themselves existing. They would have at least agreed on the principle of why they were needed and not pried into how they worked.

@@parkerboy795 Either way of turning sides, voluntary or not, that knowledge will then would make Batman a priority and the approach would be met with extreme caution. Would be extremely difficult to lay a trap for someone expecting it which Batman’s plans relied on. It’s not like the methods in which these contingencies relied upon were just boldfaced confrontations. It’s like launching a surprise attack from behind someone while yelling, “Surprise!”
I appreciate Coy referencing the first arc of Zdarsky’s run called Failsafe which is fantastic with the robot being Batman’s contingency plan for himself.
One of my favorite episodes in Justice League Unlimited is the "The Great Brain Robbery" where Rosenbaum's Wally West switches minds with Brown's Lex Luthor. Just seeing both actors imitating the other is just hilarious. Rosenbaum when interviewing Brown in Inside of You podcast said it was their favorite episode.
And of course Rosenbaum was also playing Lex in Smallville at the time. :P

Funniest part of that ep was lex as the flash looking in the mirror while unmasked saying i have no idea who this is (dunno if it was the correct line but it was still funny)

Dwayne McDuffie is my DC touchstone. Every time I think of definitive DC it's usually his works in comics and animation.

Really love this spin on Tower of Babel. I think the animation is slightly stiff in places, but the voice acting and story make that a minor complaint.
This is a side note, but this and many other movies prior to the DCAMU have a great balance of on screen violence. It’s not so tame that characters can’t be hurt or villains can’t use guns and such, but it’s also not so aggressively violent that is sort of loses its punch or makes it feel like needless gore.
Unfortunately, it kind of misses the point of Tower of Babel.
That story was all about Batman's hubris nearly destroying the League, and the consequences he and the League suffer for it.
Batman's family of heroes face paranoia for a long time from other heroes, because of what he did.
Even Barbara Gordon tells him "hey, you screwed up"
And later on, Bruce himself even admits that he could have told the League "hey, we need contingencies, we need to be ready for the worst" instead of trusting only himself with that.
The movie?
Not only does it have Batman save everyone's asses, it treats him like he's right even when he's wrong.

@@MrImastinker I see your point but it only misses the point if they wanted a direct adaptation/translation. It seems like they didn't intend for that, since it pretty clearly sides with Batman. It's just a different story that uses some ideas from Tower of Babel.

Not only do I love rewatching these movies and supporting my favorite channel, but Coy and John have such a great chemistry and play well off each other. They're clearly enjoying doing this and it shows, which makes it so much more entertaining to watch. One of the best parts of my Sundays. Thanks, guys! And shoutout to Coy's arms.

This movie has the best voice cast for the League - all the DCAU JL voice actors, plus Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan, the best depiction of the character to date. Wish we could have gotten more projects with these seven.
The Superman/Batman movies are really worth checking out, Public Enemies and Apocalypse. I don't think they're really related, their artstyles are completely different, but they're both a really good time.

Based off the superman/batman series during the early 00s. I’d say though the art was different. They are the same supes and bats. The art is similar to their comic book source material. That book series had different artists showcase their styles. So I appreciate how they did that for the movies as well.
@@lx130for reallllll, they nailed both Ed McGuiness and Michael Turner's art, it made the decisions behind the art for Killing Joke completely baffling to me.

Highly recommend All Star Superman, a movie adaptation to one of Superman’s greatest comic book stories.
I honestly dont remember much about the plot but I do remember the tone which was sombre and melancholic. And of course that ending which was very touching. It definitely would be interesting to revisit the movie with Coy and John.
Michael Rosembaum played Flash in the DC Animated Universe. Plus the Alfred chicken soup joke is a reference to the BTAS episode "Heart of Ice"

It always feels good revisiting these older movies and seeing the classic costumes. Post Flashpoint era movies had so many odd design choices.
Wonder Woman 2009, Justice League: The New Frontier, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker are must watches.
So glad that y'all talked, if briefly, about Dwayne McDuffie, who, in my opinion, arguably understood characters better than pretty much any other writer, at the very least in animation. Pretty much everything he touched turned to gold, and he was gone far too soon.
I love the Tower of Babel story. And it has an iconic cover.

This is one of my favorites. The original JL cast was not the only one that came back in this, but the voice actors of Vandal Savage and Mirror Master were part of the DCAU as well.

One of the many reasons Batman is my all time favorite superhero is that he (unlike the other core members) can clearly see how dangerous that the Justice League can be. How any of them can either willingly, be forced under duress, or under mind control, can cause as much pain and suffering as any of the many villains they fight. He can see how even heroes need to be kept in check.
There is actually a scene in one of the Justice League comics where after Batman comes to trust Superman completely, takes him to the batcave and shows him these boxes he has locked in a safe that contain either the weapons, technology or plans needed to incapacitate any or all members of the Justice League. But when he shows Clark Wonder Woman’s container he opens it to sho it is empty. Meaning even the smartest and most devious tactician and strategist in the world can’t find a true weakness for Diana.
His point his valid, but how he chose act about it was incredibly flawed. Especially since it almost got the League killed.
From what I remember, he told Superman, that he was Diana's weakness, only one strong enough to take her out in a normal confrontation.
@@RV-vx9ek nope, because she has magic weaponry, and Superman is as weak to magic as he is to kryptonite.
@thedarkknight2221 well not entirely correct. Superman is as vulnerable to magic as The Flash is, or Batman, or Martian Manhunter, or any person. Green Kryptonite is a material weakness that only negatively affects him and other Kryptonians. Mght sound pedantic, but that is correct.
Beside that, of course an enchanted weapon will cut him like a regular blade would a human, but Diana can't overpower him, which is where he will always have the edge.
@@RV-vx9ek true he has the strength advantage but she’s fought plenty of enemies stronger than her before, and she has a massive advantage over Superman in that she has thousands of years of combat experience and training with some of the greatest warriors that ever lived. Clark is not a fighter by nature, he has no technique, it’s why Batman almost always kicks his ass.

One of my favorite DC Animated Movies and a nice take on the Justice League: Book of Babel story. So fun. When I'm not sure what to watch, this is one of the movies I have on rotation. Also, that kick Batman used to knockout Bane towards the end of the movie is dope!
While you may love Michael Rosenbaum as Luthor, I will admit I knew him as the Flash long before I was introduced to Smallville as Michael was the Flash in both the Justice League and Justice League Unlimited animated shows.

This is one of the films I was looking forward to seeing you all react to. This is one of my favorite DC animated films, definitely in my top 5 DC animated films.
Doom is one of my favorites, and by far my favorite animation style.
This was my first foray into the animated films, I bought it when it was released. That's when I realized how great the animated movies could be.
It was wonderful getting the JL animated series voice actors together again.

I see your point but that's not Batmans nature and to be honest, that could cause problems as well..the more ppl that know a thing the greater the chance it will get out and to the enemies of the JL...Think about it, if a enemy mind controlled one member, picked his/her brain and found out, Hey Batman has detailed plans on how to take down the entire league. I mean let's be honest here, Batman most likely has more resistance to mind control than the entire league..he has trained and study just about everything in both the physical and the mental to prepare himself so he would be wary of the other leaguers ability to resist.
@@shootingreal5945 You can't be secretive about that kind of thing on a team. It doesn't work that way. This movie and the comic it's based on already made that happen. And it was because Batman didn't tell the League he had the plans that they were in danger and because he didn't secure them well enough that they were in danger. That's ridiculous. He'd likely controlled just like them. What'd be the contingency for that and no, not the League since its apparently so easy for him to take them down.
@parkerboy795 Well the concept of Batman not securing the plans well enough is laughable but the writers went with that sadly and expect us the viewers to buy it..also Batman being controlled is certainly not the same as Superman or WW or GL. The level of destruction Superman can do mind controlled is unimaginable so I can see why Batman would focus on those leaguers who are like nukes as far as forming plans to stop them.
@@shootingreal5945Except it's not. He's not perfect. In fact, his arrogance and paranoia are on full display in this story. He could have told the League the plans existed without revealing their details. That way their purpose isn't undermined and the League's trust in him isn't fractured. Not to mention, the plans security is already in question considering some of Batman's enemies know who he is and could steal them, which is exactly what happened in the comic. Considering scores of people act like he easily beat the League who they view as gods, it seems like it's at the same level if not even worse. Even then, that still makes him a danger so what's the contingency for him?

The solar flare idea was also in the final episode of Challenge of the Superfriends back in the day. I think the episode was called History of Doom.

34:54 in the comics Batman's Contingency plan for himself was a robot he created called Failsafe.
It knows all his moves and how he thinks.
Unfortunately Failsafe went rogue and tried to kill him
In the Flash tv show, the Trickster (played by Mark Hamill) puts a bomb on Flash and he has to vibrate through something to get it off, just like in this movie. I assume it’s probably from the comics, and not a reference to this.

The one thing about this one I find weird is the artist/designer really really loves ab windows. Nothing wrong with it but a ton of the characters have exposed midriffs with real low rise pants(Jack, King and Cheetah for example) or just straight up ab to V line windows.(Saphire and Baine) It is most noticeable in the lineup of the villains.

Doom is okay, much prefer the comic this is based off of. The Tower of Babel story line on the comic is more fleshed out and the villain is Ra’s Al Ghul. Which makes for far compelling arc for him than simply Batman saving the day. I guess this is the one I don’t recommend to people 😂

I also don't care for the much clear favoritism towards Batman in this movie. The comics actually explored the flaws and ramifications of his actions.

One of the best DC animated films that isn't fully connected to many other films. The only major changes from Tower of Babel source material is Bane-v-Batman and Vandal Savage replaced Ras Al-Guhl stealing Batman's contingency plans.

This was a pretty good adaptation of Tower of Babel even with the changes along with reuniting the Justice League animated series cast.

Basically Crisis On Two Earths was originally supposed to be an episode of the Justice League TV show and for Doom they brought back alot of the original voice cast from the show. So Kevin Conroy as Batman, Susan Eisenberg as Wonder Woman, and Carl Lumbly as J’onn. While Michael Rosenbaum who originally voiced Wally West/Flash in the show plays the Barry Allen version here and Tim Daly who voiced Superman in “Superman The Animated Series” reprised his role instead of George Newbern who voiced the character in “Justice League” and “Justice League Unlimited”.
Still think my favorite was his plans as well knowing the many more he has for other heros

Idk if this is mentioned but outside of Nathan fillion green lantern and cyborg, the rest of the Justice league cast are all from the cartoon show. Rosebaum yes great Lex but also amazing Wally west
This movie is an adaption of the JLA: Tower of Babel comic arc from 2000. (JLA #43-46)This was a Mark Waid Justice League story. The movie added a couple of different characters not used in the comic but the general theme is the same.
