I was a crazy opera fan at the Old Metropolitan House from 1959 and still am. I saw all the great post-war singers. He was stupendous, great voice and incredible stage presence. I was so lucky to see all his role. What a time it was. It gradually fizzed at in the mid-seventies. There were marvelous singers then, but the Post-war greats were gone. Siepi was one of the giants. Freni was one of the newer crop and she was magnificent.

@@rodrigoorrego7866 His son was one of my good friends in college. I spent a few days with Mr. Siepi and his family, and they couldn't have been any kinder or more generous. A year or two later, I got a phone call and it was him, asking if I wanted to come and see him sing in San Francisco, which I did. His voice was absolutely huge, and when he went for the low notes, you thought the ceiling was going to cave in.

@@Shahrdad I had got the impression of a very decent man so it's nice to have direct confirmation. I envy that you heard him live too. It's nice to hear confirmation of his power too. That much seems pretty clear from recordings but I did once hear a great tenor live and his voice barely carried the middle of the hall. Thank you.

I've heard great opera singers live, and all of them have unbelievable, almost unimaginable voices. This great tenor either had a bad night or maybe wasn't so great. Do you mind saying who it was? For instance Pavarotti didn't have a dramatic voice, but they say his voice carried very well. Same for Gigli.

I have the video cassette of this & I think it’s from the mid ´80s when Siepi was I believe in his mid sixties. He kept singing until around 1988 I think & still sounds terrific here. Most claim that he was born in 1923 but once I saw 1920 as his birthdate. He had early experience as a madrigal singer in his teens & made his opera debut (either at 18 or 21) as Sparafucile I think. In any case he had been singing opera for about 45 years at the time of this recital. Few bass voices were or are in comparable shape at this time in their career with Mark Reizen being one exception: singing GREMIN at the BOLSHOI on his 90th birthday. You tube may still have a video of this!

Thanks for that bit of info about Siepi‘s birthdate. Hardly matters anyway whether he was 66, 65, or 63. He is still in fabulous shape in the concert with Freni. In 1984 Siepi was singing in LA SONNAMBULA in Seattle & I drove downtown just to hear him sing VI RAVISSO. Before then his chief competition in this music, IMO, had been Ezio Flagello but by 1984 the latter, although some 10 years younger than Siepi, was a bit past his best years. I am only talking about the period after the mid 1950‘s in making this comparison.

Well, she is as shy & warm as ever, her voice still expressive of both the music & her inimitable personality. And she begins w perhaps the most difficult aria. And no tongue wagging, the voice & diaphragm as steady as ever. Bravi, tutti due.

All the Siepi fans commented about how fantastic he sounds here. Although I would place a number of singers above Siepi on the list of all-time basso greats, I too am a big fan of his. However, to my ears his voice here at age 62 is greatly diminished in the ring of its top notes and in its size and power throughout its range. One need only listen to this live recording from a 27-yr-old Siepi (czcams.com/video/4DNkWcS_QM4/video.html) or this one at age 47 (czcams.com/video/ecn6VzaI-UQ/video.html) to hear the difference.

Siepi was born 1921 not 1923.
I know this from a banker of Macerata.

@@achmedmohamed4708 On Wikipedia it says: "Born in Milan (his year of birth is debated between 1919 and 1923, though 1923 is given as official)." Even if we are to assume that this banker more reliably knew his true birth year, 2 years should not make much of a difference in terms of voice.

Un seul duo...Quel dommage! La classe de Siepi...Freni s'aventure dans un répertoire qui convient assez mal à sa voix de lirico mais la musicienne est impeccable. Les publicités au milieu du si b de Tosca, notamment, sont irritantes.
