Deutz F8L413F air cooled diesel engine for my project truck (narrated)

  • You're looking at a 1979 Deutz F8L413F engine, V8 aircooled diesel, naturally aspirated, 770 cubic inches, 750 ft/bs of torque, 230 hp @ 2300 rpm. It comes out of an Atlas Copco air compressor. It has an SAE 1 bellhousing. Still trying to figure what I will do with it, I'm thinking of an early 60's chevy 2-ton pickup. I have an 80's Ford F350 4x4 donor for a solid dana 60 front and 70 rear, and a divorced transfer case.
    The 2nd cylinder from the front on the driver side has a knock & smokes a bit. When I loosen the injector line it goes away. I'll have to dig into that before installing it.

    thanks. It actually stopped doing it after running for a while and also stopped puffing smoke, so my conclusion was that it was possibly a stuck picton ring. It ran great after a while. Of course now it's been in my shop for the last few years waiting to be put in its car!

    everything is so simple ,no electronic devices ,no edc control systems,just raw mechanic,260hp and big torque provides you strenght with air cooled heads and cylinders that can be changeable because engine cylinders are separated one by another with long bolts into cylinder housing.

    Very sweet sounding, Deutz air cooled engines were retro fitted to a number of Buses used by a small independant Bus operator in the UK, known as the "Gosport and Fareham" bus co. after conversion they would be unique in the UK.

    I looked at something like that, it was a forestry fire truck, and before then probably a military truck. I think the 6x6's are really cool.
    I wanted something that's suitable as daily driver. Having 3 axles kicks in extra regulation and makes for an overall heavier, slower, less manouvrable vehicle.

    it's maybe an injector
    a bad spray pattern could make it noisy
    but it looks like a valve sound ,it's very regular and seems mechanical
    if you loosen the line and it go away it means the combustion lead the noise
    injector ?
    adjust the valves and check the injector(s)
    i hope you will find, that's a beauty !

  • @castirondude
    @castirondude  Před 14 lety

    @Xx69roadrunnerxX There's a gear stack in the back that takes care of the fan drive and the valves & injection pump. The injection pump and valves run at half the engine speed, the fan drive looks like it's double. You can see the drive shaft for the fan run from the back to the front. The fan has a hydraulic clutch that uses engine oil. This motor doesn't have it but some had a thermostat on the exhaust that blocks the oil flow to the clutch to prevent over-cooling. Simple but effective!

    @PetrScorpio yea the engine had been in a junk yard for 4-5 years I think and I changed the oil, primed it, and cranked for maybe 15 seconds and she was a runner! Then every time after it started just like in the video.
    This motor has a very heavy flywheel, you can idle it down pretty low, probably 300-400 rpm. Although I think it's better not to set it below 500 to keep the lubrication & cooling systems working.

    like most diesels it generates very little heat when idling. I've run it for ~30 minutes and you can put your hands on the cylinders and exhaust without burning yourself. Try that with a gasser and it will burn you alive!

    Thanks for the advice! Actually I did swap the injector with the next cylinder and the knock was still in the same cylinder. That cylinder would also smoke blue at higher rpm but when I loosened the injector line the smoke would clear (same thing after swapping injectors). After running it a few times the smoke cleared but the knock is still there. I pulled the valve cover, valves & springs appear ok.

  • @castirondude
    @castirondude  Před 14 lety

    @MrGuvEuroman I swapped the injector with the #1 cylinder and it still was #2 knocking so it's not the injector. I think I will run the engine for a while before taking action, I've seen weird problems before with engines that sat a long time. They usually go away after the engine runs for awhile

  • @castirondude
    @castirondude  Před 13 lety

    @nrajcoomar they are probably more efficient at 80% load than 20% load, however the difference is much smaller than a gas engine.

  • @castirondude
    @castirondude  Před 14 lety

    I was thinking you may be right about the stuck rings because the 1st time I ran it (after it had been sitting for years) it clattered and smoked more than the 2nd time I ran it. It may just go away with usage.
    We just got the bellhousing adapter done to mate it to an Allison MT643. Need to do some machining on the flywheel and the pilot and bolt it all together. Can't wait till the day I pull out of the driveway!

  • @castirondude

    PS I have the factory manual and it does picture the V engines with thermostat also.
    I haven't done anything with the engine for over a year, sitting in the shop now. I'm hoping starting this winter I will be working on the truck again and driving it in 2011.

  • @castirondude
    @castirondude  Před 12 lety

    quite possibly. I had a problem on my V12 where the rack was stuck, so I took the cover off and was able to force the mechanism back and forth with a screwdriver until it loosened. You can kind of see it through the access cover although it would be hard to really do something with it without taking the whole pump apart. I have a spare pump I can look at that one day. I have this engine mounted to an Allison MT643 now. Yea possibly the governor and that automatic may not like each other.

    Aircooled:
    Runs hotter = more fuel efficient
    Bigger operating temperature range
    less parts = more reliable
    No need for water and antifreeze.
    No trouble with boiling over radiators or leaking water.
    Simpler construction with standard parts (Deutz baukasten system) = easier maintanance & cheaper
