- ELLIOTT SHARP performed "Momentum Anomaly" live at San Francisco's Canessa Gallery on October 16, 2017. Multi-genre avant-garde pioneer Elliott Sharp’s "Momentum Anomaly” suite seems less a formal musical composition in the traditional sense than a living, breathing, yet-evolving expression woven from the prolific NYC composer’s ongoing explorations technical and artistic in nature. Despite being a personal favorite of Sharp’s, Momentum Anomaly is a story never twice told the same when played live, its core expanded upon and reborn with each retelling. The performances are informed in part by memory, preserving a general structure with anchoring themes and phrases shared, but each realization emerges unique, reflecting the flexible vocabulary of the master’s intuitive connection to his physical tools as well as internal palette du moment.
Experimentation, improvisation, spontaneity, the decision to not fully map out every move in advance-these are all characteristic of Sharp’s creative approach. While his music, whether solo or collaborative, typically embraces a tremendous amount of freedom in execution, it is never carelessly random or guilty of thoughtless, self-indulgent noodling. For decades, Sharp has explored the application of science and math within the musical realm-both conceptually, in composition and performance, as well as tangibly, through the construction and modification of numerous instruments. A lifetime spent voraciously seeking out and absorbing compelling music and influences has him richly versed in myriad musical references spanning centuries and continents. Thusly equipped, Sharp procures an erudite and eloquent body of work which daily continues to grow, giving voice to the intricate, fascinatingly unconventional music of his “Inner Ear”.
I like to imagine that, at the eye of the whirling sonic storm in many a piece from Sharp, is this Inner Ear to which he frequently alludes. A calmness, a zen of sorts, the intellectual nucleus from which his art emanates. Sharp’s work ushers forth from deep within, speaking a very visceral language. Momentum Anomaly reveals no exception. Sinewy sitar-like passages weave in and out, like exotic eastern desert blues or electric mirages broadcast from a distant galaxy. Glittering harmonic slaps, clicks, and bursts fly like high-voltage bits of information down neural pathways, then ripple outward across the synaptic networks of the universe. Momentum Anomaly presents a sense of scale somehow both colossal and micro: one moment might paint an interstellar voyage, the next perhaps an intense spastic battle waged on a mitochondrial level, followed by a deep-sea dive or a pluvial reverie. It is all highly evocative, but in delightfully open-ended fashion.
There is a wealth of sound, energy, and movement in Momentum Anomaly-words like “mercurial”, “kinetic”, even “frenetic” come to mind-but equally important to establishing its flow are the beautifully asymmetric moments of quiet and pause Sharp deftly layers in. Liken it to the chiaroscuro play of light and shadow in classical painting, where the dynamic contrast of one juxtaposed with the other enlivens the composition immeasurably. Beyond the broad strokes lie numerous other elemental gems vital to the complexity to the brew. Microtonalities, unusual tunings, subtle rhythmic variations. Even amidst its dizzying plethora of electronically processed sounds, there is an undeniably live, organic expressiveness to Momentum Anomaly.
With Sharp at the wheel, the next turn is oft-unpredictable, but he has an uncanny way of nailing wildly unexpected segues as fluidly and naturally as restful breathing. Under his joyful guidance, the open-minded are shown a remarkably meditative quality and underlying order to the surface chaos. Whisked through countless planes and secret tunnels, turns, and tangents-never pointlessly-the epic path unfailingly leads us back to the piece's initial point of reference: the contemplative mesmerizing music-box motif that echoes throughout and bookends Momentum Anomaly. From there, we can either ponder the journey past or begin another anew. - J.Chan

He went full circle. Learned everything about guitar and music then got bored and went back to the beginning to rediscover the instrument. Brilliant in every way
This is sounds like modern art played on the guitar.
This guy just waxed off for 30 minutes and posted it on the internet and you call it art?
@@saywhat4314 *modern* art
@@xavierwindon8968 I see what you did there
at the core of avant-garde movemnt its about doing things differently from the norm. textbook will say these poeple were challenging the status quo(of the art world). This is why this type of guitar playing is called avant-garde. so id say you can actually call it modern art especially modern art is the beginning of considering non-traditional media as art.
Some of the most ridiculous art form was from avant-garde. It was like making art to protest...to expand the definition of art and taking that authority away from institutions. It was more about breaking standards than setting standards. HOWEVER, years later people are taking advantage of avant-garde to make shitty art while circle jerking in the art world. It is quite ironic the chosen format for those anti-art has BECOME a standard themselves while they were created to break standards. more importantly, these anti-art would not create conversations IF the artists werent well established artists already...

My guitar is in the corner crying now. Thanks a lot.
good one
I stumbled across this video something like 2 years ago, long after it was posted.
I’ve found many who play with ideas of a similar nature, since then. But to this day, I return to watch this and experience it.
The rest of us electric guitarists need to worship in your cathedral of sound, Mr. Sharp.
Very interesting ideas. Honestly the control he has over his ideas is really cool! Lots iof varied textures and sounds which are not often heard of.
Yes, but the question is does he have the technical skill to play regular music or is this it.
@@ayouthinasia4105 From a strictly academic perspective, I think he does. Because even these abstract ideas were actually musically thought out. If you are into some free jazz/avant-garde/pure improvisation in general, you'll know.
From an artistic perspective, I genuinely don't think it matters as long as he is expressing himself (which is the ultimate goal to begin with). And it very much seems like so in his case
@@Subharaj_Ghosh_Guitar I would be more convinced if i were to see see him demonstrate some real technical skills, because anybody could do this.
@@ayouthinasia4105 anybody can learn technique too
@@ayouthinasia4105 he does.
Elliott Sharp made me start playing slide guitar, when i first saw him 1999 at the Skopje Jazz Festival concert with his terraplane project, and especially after that concert, at the afterparty in the best club that time, unforgettable gig!!...i was sitting one meter next to him (because there was no place where to stand in the club) and i was watching all he was doing...miracles......he was playing with some brazilian dj, it was mesmerizing...i was sober, and i couldn`t drive properly afterwards))...i couldn`t stop thinking about what i saw that evening...it changed everything i knew about music until then. Since ever i was deep into blues, especially pre-war acoustic (slide) guitar blues...combined with prog-rock, and of course everything Funkadelic made in the world...i was stubborn and i tried to play and learn the slide guitar in a way that wasn`t recommended, my own way. And it was all because of this freedom i saw that night. That stubbornness pays off two decades after, now i have my own style and i enjoy music to the fullest, whatever it might be...thank you Master Sharp! A.S.Z.
Aleksandar, thanks for sharing your E# story! To hear you recount your experience, I can sense your exhilaration, that epiphanic and liberating feeling to have your view of music expanded and enriched with newfound freedom. This not the sort of commonplace or everyday experience one has with music; it's truly unique, a joy, and-as you have mentioned-changes everything. Glad you found the way to unlock your personal style, as it's not everyone who does find this level of inspiration. Cheers!
Thank you for understanding and sharing it, your feedback. Authentic feedbacks are much appreciated these days. All the best, Alex))
This makes me do a big time happy dance.
That's rad !!!
That's it, I'm going out to buy one of those Aria Sinsonidos right now! Wish I could see E# live.
Well this certainly is... interesting, not quite my taste but it is interesting.
His control over losing control
All expressions are true and come from the heart and that’s why it’s all good. So whether it’s him or Fred Frith or anybody else it’s all good everyone everyone is good. Everyone is different that makes the beauty in the world. My most favorite thing I need to say is how nice and is doing it without a pedalboard no reverb he’s not just messing around he has he knows how to get these sounds he’s experimenting he’s practiced and now he’s playing where he’s practice and that’s called art whether you like it or not it’s just Art. this is not exactly my favorite cup of tea but I listen to it because I like hearing others expressions that are not mine and also to internalize and except everybody who they are and sometimes along the way I hear something I really like to do anyway, have fun everybody
Always love hearing and seeing people experiment with new ideas and techniques. Avante garde space is always good for that . Every big musical genre got its start somewhere with someone doing things like this. Finger tapping and bass slap technique everyone used to think was avante garde and now it's mainstream. Lots of interesting ideas Elliot! You've got a new fan in me.
Hi Elliot enjoying listening as I work to this xx always a fan and love the ear stimulus and so much you get out of that guitar ! xxKatie
this is such awesome sound
I havent had enough drugs yet...
Truly an inspirational approach that defies all modes of wankery.
I searched for Experimental Avant-Garde Guitar and I am so glad I found it. Exactly what I was hoping for. Very interesting stuff!
I prefer Fred Frith. This is rmore a randon messing about on the guitar. I love many forms of music that pushes the boundaries - fringe, art music, experimental, avant-garde but while this sits well within a category of its own, it's essentially 'messing about noise guitar'. Check out Fed Frith, Henry Kaiser, Robert Fripp, The Perrinormal (Kris Normal), Derek Bailey, Asak Mabol, Arto Lindsey, Golden Palaminos (Clean Plate).
Cool guitar sounds! Love when those natural harmonics get used percussively.
Prepared electric guitar at its finest.
Scary good
Sound and nature.
The images give a nice vibe.
Thank God some actual unique playing!
incredible work. love it.

Wow this came on while I was in my kitchen , I honestly thought my 18 month old son got hold of my guitar , Pretentious Rubbish , mmmmmmmmm oh it reminds me of a Scene of Blah blah blah .
This is interesting. For enjoying this you have to open your mind and listen beyond tradicional music rules.
For me it is like floating in the space with nowhere to go. Just let myself get carried away by his sounds
Jesus fuck this comment section is a nightmare. If you like the music, you like it! You’re neither superior or inferior in any way if you do or don’t. Just be open
My friend Newel said check this out. Most of his check-outs are shite,but....fair play, not too craigavad at all at all.
That's really weird, but I actually like it...
My favorite 3:50
I loved every second of it. You are the man!
Drones in the HIve
this sounds like the feeling of needing to fart
Great sounds from his guitar!... The muted notes, glissandos and harmonics are awesome.
Tip for people who "dont understand this music": JUST LISTEN.
Great video too!
If it doesn't feel like there's a point or purpose then "just listening" becomes equally pointless and void of purpose.
It’s not that I don’t understand it, it’s that it’s terrible. There is no meaning to any of this. It just sounds like improvisation. Not only does it sound like improvisation, it sounds like someone who’s never touched a guitar before trying to improvise. This by far the worst genre of music on the planet.
@Nicholas Tzilinis exactly, it's a balance of both
@Nicholas Tzilinis well yeah of course sound is the priority of course, but you know technical skills are good to have too
This is utterly terrible, actually, how do you enjoy it?
Genial xd
So, I'm not the only crazy guitar player.
get over yourself plenty of people play guitar like this
Check out Keith Rowe, David Torn, and Derek Bailey.
This makes me burst out in laughter
hey Eliott, did you use JUltram for the bagpipes part at 9:11 ? Question, seriously.
nice one

Great Work Congrats
When you’re bored at home and don’t know what to play.
BRO YES
I have never done drugs in my life but i would imagine this is how it would feel to be high
Depends on which one
Такой довольный, чисто сидит кайфует.))) Ваще похрену, что там звучит не звучит. Закинулся интересными веществами и счастлив. Крутой мужик. )
What have I stumbled upon
Terrible music
Amazing performance and tone. The world needs more of this avant stuff specially when pop;rock/metal do not offer anything new.
You're that guy that will buy a 30$ black dot painting
Like avant garde can actually offer something pleasant to listen to, let's be realistic if this was a popular genre it would be the musical equivalent of abstract art and I'm not saying it's 100% crap, all I'm saying is that by itself, it just doesn't work, it'd be better if it were paired up with another genre like pop;rock/metal
@@somedudeintheinterweb8665 it's all opinions though. For some reason I love this type of music, it's interesting for me to listen to. It shows someone pushing the limits of what's possible with a guitar. It makes me want to pick up my guitar and just have fun.
Very wierd, but very interesting.
What is that object (3:51) on your right hand?
It is an EBow-electronic bow. Which specific one Elliott is using here I do not know, but check out this article for some insight into how they work and are used! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBow
Its an ebow you unripe grape
Pretty cool over all, but the whole time I had the same feeling you get when when someone drags their nails on a chalk board or scrapes their teeth on a fork
This is literally me when I try to play anything from Animals As Leaders while being drunk af
🤔
this is a result of winning participation trophies
I literally do this kind of shit when I'm bored and tired of practicing are you for real? This is the equivalent of Yoko Ono's "singing"... keep doing you though someone out there has gotta like it right?
I was looking at wikipedia's list of extended range guitar players and stumbled onto this. I had quite a laugh when he started playing the guitar because thats exactly what I thought, "the shit I play when I'm bored and don't want to practise".
This guy just takes it more seriously than you
@@cosmichome626 just because he takes it seriously doesn’t mean it’s good.
@@cosmichome626 are you telling me that if a took a shit on a canvas but i took it seriously it would make it good artwork?
@@xavierwindon8968 I did not mean it is good. I said that for a guy on the video doing ridicoulous movements for strange sound is not shameful in contrast to us.
He is the reincarnation of Derek Bailey
This is literally just noodling.
I know ya it’s actual trash
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic I disagree, I'm interested in these sounds. its always fascinating to hear people who dare to try something different, away from the masonic square grid klik trak pro tooled anodyne autotune rubbish thats been reheated, recycled and dead horse flogged since the era of elvis presley and the beatles
@@GOLDSMITHEXILE you obviously only listen to mainstream music if you genuinely think that. The music being made today is the greatest _ever_ , you just need to look a bit harder because of how much music is being created. Sure people can like avante garde if they like, I have no problem with that, but I am thoroughly 100% against those avante garde snobs who call it an elevated form of art and that people just don’t understand. The OP is right, it is just noodling.
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic AGREED
@@MiloMcCarthyMusic it's not elivated art it's just art. and this is quite possibly the least mainstream music possibly can get. For someone complaining about people being pretentious the horse you are riding on is getting pretty high
Sat through this entire video trying to keep an open mind and understand this a little bit. All this did was hurt my ears. Maybe that’s the point but I don’t care. I listen to death metal so in terms of music im open to a lot of things. I wasted 40 minutes of my life I’ll never get back on useless noise.
Funny, that's my impression of death metal.
@@Kohntarkosz you’ve most definitely been listening to the wrong death metal. Do you mind me asking what you’ve heard? And are you into classical music at all? If yes, then absolutely give death metal another chance.
🤔 ummm?
Cool sounds..can he play a song ??
Okay, I think some the sounds here could be used in a song or taught as a guitar technique, now do I think this is good music? No I think it's best use would be as a secondary music genre that's used to spice up much more better sounding music genre, like rock, or etc...
1:22 When you're trying to be eddie van halen
Lets just say he’s banned from open mic
WTF?
He need guitar lessons.. or guitar is just not for him.
This is what happens when you think you are the shit and don't need to actually play the instrument... extremely painful to listen to
You can tell by the way his hands are moving he's pretty good at guitar but just kinda bored so he's making weird shit because he can
