In this video the giant timber (Bambusa oldhamii) bamboo I buried in the ground grew roots and shoots. The process took about 3 months during the active and rainy growing season here in the Florida summer. I had great success and nine nodes grew roots. In this video I uncover the rooted cuttings, cut them apart, and begin to pot them up. Sometimes I cut them and leave them in the ground a little longer to get stronger before harvesting the cuttings. I think this method of propagating bamboo is one of the easiest if you don't have one in a pot already. I show the air layer, but Im still waiting for it to fully root.

Hi Tia. Very nice video. From a person born and bred in village sourrounded by bamboo groves everywhere (wild bamboo) it is a bit nostalgic and very enteretaining. Born and bred in Java but now live in downunder. Cheers
My spouse is the same. She was born in Philippines. When we purchased our home in Florida I really wanted her to have that home feeling. I researched and found all the large tropical clumping varieties that would survive in Central Florida (that are available to purchase in USA). Then I planted one of each. I now have something like 25 species and our property is just so beautiful.

1. plant clumping bamboo only, not running bamboo.
2. Maintain the clump by cutting out the old canes once they turn brown or before if you want to use them.
3. Cut out new growth when they are young to maintain the size of the clump so it doesn't grow too much. This may take repeat cutting at ground level or cut and apply a little dab of herbicide. See my video on this: czcams.com/video/2IPkgDurGIY/video.html

I give some plants away at the orlando permaculture or ideas for us plant swap occasionally. Otherwise, look for a bamboo nursery near you. You can buy the smallest size and it will grow.

Yes you can dig up the root too. Look for a new sprout or a young bamboo stalk and dig that up. I usually don't do this method because it is very hard to dig up once in the ground. You can keep some in pots and divide them, thats much easier.

In Florida, when the bamboo is actively growing so March to October is best.
Thanks for the very informative video, my question is about clumping. When you propagate a stalk, about 7 ft. will it try to form it's own clump at each node? I want to make a giant wall using clumping bamboo that's about 80ft tall and a diameter of 10" to 12" already on the property.
In some cases, like my video here, a new sprout grew at almost every node. But in most cases, I wouldn't expect new shoots to grow from every node. When I've cut down 20' lengths and laid it down usually just a couple nodes sprout shoots, usually more from the base of the bamboo stalk and not much from the top. Hope this helps!
Hello Tia, would it be possible to make a video about if you need to cold stratify (refrigerate) bamboo seeds? Any information I find is conflicting. Some say yes.. refrigerate for a couple MONTHS and other info appears to indicate that you do not need to refrigerate. I am only trying to sprout clumping bamboos and I live near the coast in central Florida.

Sorry I know nothing about bamboo seeds. I've never even seen a bamboo seed! I've always propagated from vegetative cuttings. There are some bamboo nurseries around you can get the smallest size starter plant or get one from a friend.
Hi. These plants (bamboos) do not propagate from seeds. First they don't produce any quality seeds. Altough they produce some flower. They reproduce using their root system. If you can get any piece of bamboo clump with a node that has "just a tiny indication" of future root/the size a small rice grain, bright yellow. Put it on the dirt as Tia explained. Even better you apply some water under that dirt. (the secret of bamboo grove location is:"They live near water" ( in Asia) as for growing seed using refrigerated bamboo seed in the fridge, well, bit too much Yale or Harvard's Scientific explanation. can you do this technique with just about any clumping bamboo? I was thinking about doing this with the smaller Golden Goddess bamboo, I also have Sebreaze and Graceful to work with.
Yes this technique works with all bamboos, although some varieties are harder to root than others. The important part is you have a moist shady environment.
The shoot that was planted with 7 new growth shoots, could you have planted it along a drive way and just left it? If so that would be perfect for what I’m wanting to do along my driveway. Thank you for all your information.
Yes you can just plant it where you want it to grow. I don't want my clumps to get any bigger so I start them in the ground and then put them in pots. If the site where you want to get them established is shady and wet they should grow well. If it's sunny and dry consider adding some drip irrigation, compost, and mulch to keep the soil moist so the shoots can grow roots.
Hi I know this video is quite dated, but if anyone can help i have a question. From the nodes she propagated and the species of bamboo she got them from, will these sprouts grow as thick as the parent stem? I have successfully done this, but it seems the sprout has just grown tall without any thickness to the trunk itself. Thanks for any info.
The bamboo is a clone from the parent, so in about 3 years the bamboo will grow as thick as the mother plant. Once you get the sprouts, dig them up and give them some fresh soil, sun and fertilizer/compost to feed them along.

I usually see rooting after a month or two and wait until 3 month to harvest the new plant.
Hi..I'm living in Jamaica, we have built a new home and are looking to block out the back neighbor I have wanted a wall of bamboo there forever!! If I lie the bamboo down and cover it as you did is there any reason I couldn't leave it there to grow? Does it have to be cut out?
Yes you can cut, bury and leave the bamboo there to grow. The cutting like some shade and moisture to root so if its in a sunny area use lots of compost and water often. Good luck!
Anybody know where to publicly find free running bamboo in South Florida? Especially around Miami and Sebring Florida.
Will this method work for running bamboo or only clumping bamboo?
Both types, although I only recommend planting clumping bamboos as many running bamboos are invasive and can become problematic for the landscape and environment.

Yes, but I would recommend using only clumping bamboo varieties for home landscape projects.

Can I add a whole bamboo stick with the nodes and grow them in the ground, rather than take them out and put them in pots?
Yes, you can do the ground layering where you lay the bamboo piece (usually 5' or longer) on the ground and it will root at the nodes.
Do you sell rooted clippings?
No I don't sell plants but check for a local bamboo nursery near you such as Bamboo Forever or Beautiful Bamboo.
Do you really have to separate all the nodes, can you not leave it all in?
I could just leave it in the ground and let it grow, but I do not want the bamboo to be in that location and so that’s why I cut it between each of the nodes and put them in pots to move them or give them away to friends.

It takes about 1 - 3 months. You will see shoots and once the new shoots get some leaves its ready to go.

About growing from a seed?what about bamboo fertilizer
I've never seen a bamboo plant make a seed, but you could try that! For fertilizer, I don't fertilize much but my friends at Bamboo Forever nursery in Geneva, FL recommend a slow-release (6 month) fertilizer with N-P-K ratio of 18-5-10.
What’s the time span between these videos?
Hi Greg, The first video was on May 9 and the 2nd was Aug. 22 so just a couple of months in the warm and wet growing season here in Florida.
