Wish I had a time machine. If I did I'd go back to my 4 yr old self and have him say "Mummy, daddy. For my Birthday treat this summer can we go to Pinkpop festival and get down to the Dada-ist Blues stylings of the great Captain Beefheart? I promise to be really really really good for ever and ever." Love the super 8 look and great energy of this version.
Fantastic! That year my dad worked at the festival and took me along, and when Joe Cocker left the stage, Beefheart went up to play, and we were there to witness how they greeted like old friends. And Joe Cocker shook my hand (I was 11 years old then), never washed it anymore. Ahhhhh, sentimental old journey :-) Pinkpop at that time was fantastic. When it left Geleen, it became rubbish!
What a great band. This same lineup with the Captain has several videos here on yt, grey whistle test etc. The lead player with the LP deluxe plays some sweet guitar or can get weird as needed.
Morrison put his ass out there and on the line in many ways and at a very dangerous time that's hard to understand today!Jim and the Doors are one of the greatest bands ever, the Captain is also a true rock artist who lived and performed on the edge and never received the critical acclaim he deserved,no need at all to pit them against each other!!I do not get all of the grief leveled at the Doors, almost all their albums had many great songs where most other albums have only one or two?
Beefheart clicked with me when I was 14; I didn't get the Doors until 4 years ago, I think it was Not To Touch the Earth, and My Wild Love...they send shivers down my spine just like the Good Captain (and also like the Captain, even a bad Doors album is way better than most other good albums) My 2 cents!
you're opposite of me. loved the Doors from early on. only heard of The Capt but didn't get into to him until after his death. read a great post humous article of his greatness hence had to go discover him soooo glad i found him. better late than never. a true genius.
Saw him at Notts Uni on a Hot sticky night he was BRILLIANT + Majik band His best quote of the night "Ive got too many fans, and not enough fans!!" Just far out man...
Thank you for sharing. Clip is very well made. At least, I love it. Got the atmosphere of the day. ... And for the pathetic comments (below) ... If you got ears, you need to listen even better.
concur. Neither the complexity nor the wobble of the original. Still better than most everything else though. What a band that was. 1967 -1973 impeccable.
"The difference between his music and Frank's was like night and day. Frank was avantgarde, but Beefheart was the real thing, totally left-field ..." Jimmy Carl Black
@Lorddoucheington Ido not think you can get this from anywhere excepting here on Utube .And I AGREE THIS IS A SUPERB PERFORMANCE .Its a crying shame because I feel uplifted when I hear this. RUSTY.
see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Beefheart and look at the paragraph under "Unconditionally Guaranteed". This version of the band probably made up that beginning, the Captain having nothing to do with it.
I was there, folks! Stoned like a million potatoes... I had a complete brain meltdown during this concert 😆! Golden years! Magick Band!🤩
Man , I can see that it's THE TRAGIC Band !
О друже, я уявляю наскільки це було круто

first heard captain 51 years ago changed my life turn lights off lay down and listen no one else like him just brilliant ian pert 2021
Every "terrible" decision Don made produced gold in the fullness of time. This is one. "Peaches '74" is another.
Don was truly a Captain of his own beautiful ship.
great description
I was at this Pink Pop festival in 1974. Unforgettable.
He was quite a force and an innovative artist. What's even more amazing is that the Mirror Man original recordings dated back to 1967!
Not often said but .... a magnificant harp player!
Very true
man ....i love to have been there to see the great beefheart and his magic band.. awesome
I first heard this in the John Peel radio show in the UK a billion years ago.
Always love listening to the genius of this guy, an absolute diamond he was like a one off of piece of priceless jewelry, a law unto himself. 🎶✌️🎤
Most inventive group of guys led by the captain , never be another band like them
What a great band. This same lineup with the Captain has several videos here on yt, grey whistle test etc. The lead player with the LP deluxe plays some sweet guitar or can get weird as needed.
That was the time when people were kind.
Now the control freak head aliens have taken over.
@@HamptonGuitars This is true. That guy was Dean Smith. A great guitar player, and a really nice guy. Peace.
@@michaellakey3565 So true. I was thinking pretty much the exact same thing. Such a shame. Peace.
What a Band!!!!

Good times. Wish I could experience it myself.
Who cares if it's not in synch ? Most people wouldn't know. But , the footage is amazing !
Thanks for all the Magic, Beefie, will always keep it close...party hardy time in whatever universe you're traversing
Don was the Captain of a Magical Ship.

When garage rock became profound. The harp parts are sick. Invention in its purest form.

'70s ROCKS !!!!!
Tremendos , 🎸🔥🙏....Captain❤....desde Argentina 🇦🇷✌️
His London 1974 live album was a good one. It started out with this song.

Anything he touched became art.love the guy..
Thank you for the great file! Interesting!
A stellar edit!
Great song!!!

Discovered the Captain through Frank Zappa. Another one of a kind.
"The difference between his music and Frank's was like night and day. Frank was avantgarde, but Beefheart was the real thing, totally left-field ..." Jimmy Carl Black
rest in peace, Don ...
Hell yeah
great stuff!
great clip good to see The Captain back in the day even though it is 1974 not Don's best year musically
Yes, he was beyond great. But this was when they tried to commercialize him.
There's one in every crowd!
i should have been there.
Ahoy, beefheads! Onward and upwards ye maties of the mighty sea! The captain is here and there and everywhere! Ya'll onboard?
On board since "Trout mask replica" came out, cheers bro'!

No Magic here. This is just a few months after Zoot Horn and the boys parted ways with the Captain.

@Lorddoucheington Ido not think you can get this from anywhere excepting here on Utube .And I AGREE THIS IS A SUPERB PERFORMANCE .Its a crying shame because I feel uplifted when I hear this. RUSTY.
Nothing like as good as the version on the 1969 album "Strictly Personal". That was an amazing track
Did Tom Waits rip these guys off?
Beefheart appears at 2:30
3:08 - 3:12 emo hair fix, i always knew it was pioneered somewhere, beefheart FTW
The magic band didnt feature a saxophone or keyboards . Who were these guys ?
@Nigelxman Both Captain Beefheart and Frank Zappa and anyone like them would call themselves weird lmao
Nothing at all wrong with this version. 4:54 fast metal muted guitar string scratching.
interesting early performance more bluesy!
Anyone know the intro/jam name before mirror man? Or was this just a live jam, like a warm-up jam?
see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Beefheart and look at the paragraph under "Unconditionally Guaranteed". This version of the band probably made up that beginning, the Captain having nothing to do with it.
