  • The US Army firing cannons at Arlington National Cemetery.
"The "Guns" Platoon currently assigned to HHC 1st Battalion, 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard) has been located on Ft. Myer since 1953. The platoon is equipped with 10 guns and uses batteries composed of two, three, or four guns to render honors in ceremonies on behalf of the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. Batteries fire at all general officer funerals in Arlington National Cemetery, wreath-laying ceremonies at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and arrivals and departures of foreign dignitaries at Fort Myer, the Pentagon, the White House, and Andrews Air Force Base. Every year the Presidential Salute Battery joins the National Symphony Orchestra on the 4th of July to perform the 1812 Overture as it was originally written. Noteworthy ceremonies include the following: participation in every Presidential Inauguration since President Eisenhower's in 1956, President Kennedy's, Reagan's Ford's, and Nixon's state funeral, the internment of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam unknowns."

No that's its own thing. The changing of the guards is the tomb of the unknown soldiers.

Different ranks warrant different number of shots -- the higher the rank, the more shots topping out at 21 for the President

Looking for the same answer....this looked like the intervals that were used for GB Sr. Funeral. If you find any answers let me know. I have only seen 9 second intervals once and I agree it's very strange.

title c in 600-25 army regulation manual states in title c of 3-3 that if there is less guns available the intervals are shorter.... there are only 2 active firing teams one cannon is left in reserve for misfires. kinda hard to do 3 sec intervals with only 2 fire teams.

Everything I referenced used five (5) second intervals. With the exception of innaguration uses three (3) second intervals. But I didn't see one of those this year either.
