"This is echoed clearly in the verse of the Qur’an cited below where God says that intoxicants sever the relationship with God, as well as family and community. It views intoxicants as the cause for disruptive social behavior. It urges believers to shun and reject the habit, so that they may prosper both in their horizontal relationship with kith and kin, as well as in their vertical relationship with God. Furthermore, prosperity can mean both spiritual and financial prosperity, which are drastically affected, due to substance addiction. The Qur’an says:
You who believe, intoxicants and gambling, idolatrous practices, and [divining with] arrows are repugnant acts-Satan’s doing-shun them so that you may prosper. With intoxicants and gambling, Satan seeks only to incite enmity and hatred among you, and to stop you remembering God and prayer. Will you not give them up? ([15], al-Ma’ida 5:90-91).

It’s not the substance itself, it’s the dependency in the need for a substance to feel as if you need it to function normally on a regular basis. Same as money. Money isn’t the sin, the love of money is essentially. Have self discipline and self control and everything is cool in moderation

Different compounds are used for different purposes. They come from the hemp plant. CBD is the compound that they use to treat illnesses and medical conditions. This does not produce psychoactive effects. THC is what produces psychoactive effects and is classed as haraam. Back during the days of the Ottoman Empire, there was speculation about coffee and caffeine and the ulema passed a fatwa forbidding it at one point, but the evidence was re-evaluated and the ban was lifted. Hence how coffee became very popular in that part of the world.

I’m definitely not saying marijuana is fine. We all know anything that intoxicates is haram. Just wanted to preface by saying that.
But serious question, what is the difference between that and pharmaceuticals. I personally take meds for ptsd. I see others who smoke for their PTSD or anxiety. It’s better than alcohol, which is legal, and cause so much violence and destruction. My meds “alter” my brain chemistry for the better. Alhamdulillah. I also get therapy. Others are either underdiagnosed/medicated or uninsured. Just because something is legal, doesn’t mean it’s good, such as meds or alcohol. I’ve seen some people be really affected by meds as well. I really can’t stand being around people who act intoxicated by any kind of substance, but I can understand why some people turn to marijuana and not all of them act high. Some of the people I know who smoke say they take it to help with PTSD or ADHD and I see it actually helps them and they don’t act high. Idk. I just feel like some people need help and have no other option or at least genuinely believe they have no other option.
I also want to note that I see a lot of comments about people being sober and it really seems they are super happy about this ma sha Allah. Alhamdulillah that they are doing and feeling better. Hearing their perspective would be nice.
