True story! I still tell them to stop and listen to the man once in a while even though he’s got a silly sounding name. He treats people how you should and one of our favorite CZcams shows!
I use a block simply to get some elevation and a solid position. We've got nothing but sand here, so if you're chopping directly on the ground, you can get a lot of movement on the round. Putting it on another round, preferably a larger one, disperses the impact force more, gives you a lot less moving around. Other than that, being a bit taller, a block just means less leaning over. Thanks for the insight Buckin!
Love it! I finally find a buckin guy who can teach me how to sharpen my saw and he even offers mindful advice that makes the world a better place. Way to represent Billy Ray. True Islander!
I have been using a 16lb Walmart special splitting maul for the last 12 years, on a splitting block, It about rattles my bones apart. Got a nice 8 lb fiskars splitting maul, what a Cadillac of a difference. I will have to try a shorter block now after watching this video. I do the slow split through out the winter, keeps me busy, and makes winter go by faster. Thanks again for the video... I agree we need to love everyone, and everything around us right now....
I love my double bit! It was my dad's from the 50. True Temper Kelly! Our old family camping buddy taught me how to use the flick years ago. I miss that man! Shaclank!
You're message is so right(LOVE IS MUCH NEEDED IN THESES TIMES).. Now if we could get every CZcamsr/tic tocer to send that message along with every news station and everyone in the political field say that we'd been in good shape.... Keep on living and giving the message my friend.
this it what surprises me , I bet if you asked every one wwhat they wanted for the world 99 % wood say peace and that every one eats , but behind closed doors things seem to change . all the sudden out come the tough guy. Fear runs deep in the hearts of men . love is our answer

Great to see ya as always friend! Glad to see your using a block!! Especially with them beautiful bits😍 my back doesn’t like picking wood off the ground so I really like using an old tire bolted to the top of my block. Round gets split then I put it right on the wood pile. No more picking off the ground and chasing strays👍 I hope you give that a try! you’ll need a tractor tire for the size of rounds your dealing with💪 stay strong friend!
Watch and love every video also your words wisdom knowledge and most importantly you have inspired so many of us so thank you so much brother buckin 👍💪🤙🪓 keep rockin it

Hey Buckin, entering a new chapter in my life. For better or worse, we will find out. Just wanted to say I only found your videos a few months back after I bought my 500i it’s good for me here in Australia, your videos are very interesting and it’s great to see you care soo much about what you do and your community, you are an absolute legend. Thanks for entertaining me through some tough times.
I'm 35 and have begun splitting wood for the first time and really enjoy it. I found you through another youtube video and I love your content. The skill you have acquired and are freely sharing is amazing, and equally enjoyable is all the positive messages that you impart at the same time...the world could use more people like you.
I just love hearing your discussion of the pros and cons of a chopping block as well as the different lengths of the handles. I'm learning so much from you my friend! Love you all...❤❤❤ Lieutenant Bradley
Hello from the UK. I use a 4lb Hults Bruk with a 35" handle on a tall block with the motorcycle tyre. I am 6' 2" with a bad back so hate to bend down too much. I used a 2lb Elwell but as I restored the Hults Bruk I found it not too heavy. Best wishes to you all, regards Keith Burton. Thanks for your content that I enjoy.
Wood bullet is in my future lol gotta get one and support ya friend. Wood bullet is looking mighty nice. Agree on the shorter handle on the single bits. 32” is a great length. Double bits are the business. Love my double bit. Splitting monster.
I had always split with a maul, oak & hickory no block handling the wood as little as possible. I was working for a guy and he borrowed a splitter, That thing was 3 times the work. Had to handle every block several times, bending over and over, listening to an engine running. It just made me miss the peaceful quiet and lack of challenge and learning how to pay attention to the natural cracks and knots when it comes to splitting wood. Splitters have their place but aren't the only way.
Man I was always a fan of the chopping block but mine were always up high I never thought about the lower you land the more energy your creating. On the contrary I also never thought of handling the material more than needed..... GREAT point. I practice this at work why not here. Maybe there's a way to buck chopping blocks along the way. Pick real knotty sections for blocks as you we go down. Don't wanna drag the tree or the chopping block around..just a thought. Keep on keeping on brotha! Stay safe!
My take away is this dude is so good at what he does, he'll say whatever he's using at that moment is his preference. 28" axe? Perfect. 36" single bit? Definitely the favorite. 37" double bit? Perfect. Chopping block? Definitely the way to go. No chopping block? Absolutely a time saver! 😂
Great video, Buckin'! Love the message. Thanks for the tips! Nice swingin'. Personally, I would've liked to see another replay of that behind the back move! Smooth.
I love the passion you have for axes. I don't heat with wood anymore but when I did, I used an 8 lb maul. It was quite a workout. Not sure my 66 years have it in me now. Love your videos. Be safe.
If, I need a solid surface, like in the spring when the ground is soft or whatever, I use a half sheet of 3/4 plywood. I drilled a hole and tied a leash on it so I can drag it to the rounds. I also made a skid with a tire on it for the smaller stuff. That also has a leash to drag around. Make everything mobile.
i have a good olde vice i mounted on a piece of plywood beam about 2 inches thick . 10 x 20 inches . i also tacked on a loop of rope so i can grab it or pull it around in my truck bed .
You have years of skill and I can recognize it because I have split wood for years but only for my own use occasionally for friends but not enough to be able to move wood like this. It goes right where you need it and I try it and it takes me five tries to get it to the right position. Lol
Hey Billy! I get a short splitting block from right at the stump at almost every tree when I go back and flush cut stumps. And that curly butt grain don't split on accident even with a thin cookie. Love ya, brother.
I was eating watching this and had forgotten/missed that you had already taken a few shots at that round that you flipped towards yourself... when it just fell in half it looked like you did it with your mind - like it was scared 😂... Buckin’ Eh!
Found yout thru Guilty of Treeson, Inbred Jed was on square grinding some chains and he said Buckin Billy Ray is "the man", so i searched you and he was right haha hats off from a fellow BC boy, Prince George says hi! ( The town, not the Queens grandson hahaha)
Hey Buckin’! Love the looks of The Wood Bullet! I would love to have a Buckin’ Special Boys Axe…I know you don’t use small axes much but they are a wicked tool for us smaller (and older) folks! Love ya brother!
I absolutely love a boys axe. I'm in more modest wood, and 98% of the time it's more than enough of a wedge knocker, great to limb and pop suckers off with, or knock out and clean up your face cut. I have a heavier axe with me but it usually lives in the truck.
A friend of mine had a sweet gum tree cut down years ago, he gave me the wood. So me and my dad went there and oh boy! We had to pre-cut the wood just to split it! The wedge would literally bounce out of the wood! Never seen anything like it.
Becareful people are going to label you a liberal if you talk about ❤️. It is what it is. I'm with you as I myself stop and speak to people who otherwise would get ignored out on the streets as I go on my way. I agree, I don’t use a block either , mainly because my stove is an outdoor boiler and I cut my wood alot longer. But even for the barn stoves I don’t use a block for the shorter stuff. Unless it’s muddy ground
I agree with you 100 percent not many people will get out an work the way we do. Be safe an take care. An yes I love running a chainsaw an splitting fire wood. Thank you for your time. Clyde McLerran
I don't use a block anymore because of your reasons. But I always use an old tire to keep the pieces in one place for ease of stacking. Try it. It's really saves bending around gathering up flown pieces
Major 🔑 factor for improving splitting outside of the block height to consider keeping the Angle of your maul/axe edge perpidicular to the block your splitting! You will add power with a longer swing with wood closer go ground Only if you maintain solid impact angle. what I mean is if you don’t do some compensation you’ll end up striking wood almost slipping off it losing power A fan & agree with him but important note for me at least
I find it crazy that many don't even live to be 73, let alone manage something as massive as the expectations set on her for 73 years..... She must have loved what she did - similar to what you stand for!
I find that if I keep the bit of the axe toward the edge of the round that the wood splits easier. A lot of people want to split toward the center of the round. If you work around the round and take pieces off the sides until the round is small enough to split across the center. You see where it took several blows to split it across the center, if you worked around the edge each one of those swings would yield a chunk. I learned this method from working with hickory. Let a small piece of the bit hang over the edge. If you make a solid blow in the middle of the round it almost never yields a viable split. Some hardwoods can be split with a hand axe, but the majority require a full size axe. Get yourself some hickory and give it a try. Some hickory is straight grained but the majority of it is some of the toughest wood you will ever split. There are other woods like locusts that can be unforgiving and so sinewy that they are very tough to split. That sinewy wood burns the best in my opinion, especially the hickory. There are more btus in a cord of hickory than any other wood. Locust burns hotter but hickory burns longer. Cheers.
Didn't know that about Hickory. There is no Hickory where Buckin' lives. He's blessed with big tall trees with straight grain that split beautifully. Midwest and east coast has more deciduous and is hard to split. At least that's been my experience on the coast in BC vs here in Ontario.
You’re right Buckin!!…imagine how wonderful this world would be if we all treated each other with LOVE and respect. LOVE (everything good) destroys sin (everything bad). P.S. I’d LOVE it if you would please consider my plea to purchase one of your hand-made bullet axes 😬. I want to split firewood more than I don’t want to split firewood!! Looking forward to meeting you at Bunyan!
Hey Billy, as a Brit, I really appreciate your comments on our Queen. Personally I didn't find the news unexpected, as you say, she was 96, but it's still sad news for the country, she will be a hard act to follow.
Probably my favorite wrestling workout. Never had such a nice tool to split with, we always had unwieldy mauls. Probably time to find a proper axe and get a workout in.
A maul is the only way to split firewood. Axes are ok, but require much more effort and time. Axes are for chopping, mails for splitting. I can see using an axe for a small amount, or if the maul is a bit much to swing.
Hey Buckin. Thanks for the videos. I’m an Australian and this is my first season of firewood collecting. I’ve enjoyed learning to file. Have you gotten your hands on a 592 yet? Kind regards Lachie
1 John 4:7-10 7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
I don't know how you do it Buckin, I bucked and split wood for 4 hours non stop yesterday and hurt so bad when I got home and I was even using a 25 ton splitter.
Prefer a higher block for a few reasons: Like to strike the wood when the axe is near to horizontal, axe energy is in the vertical. When it's too low, the axe begins it's swing toward you; a few times it's followed through to my feet or shins... Also depends so much on the type of wood; pine is easy peasy lemon squeezy - try splitting something tougher, like Acacia in Italy...
Billy if you didn't have the option of the bullet head what would be your pick on a single bit axe head for all around use falling chopping splitting is a favorite brand you have same for a double head Thank you in advance Sorry if you already mentioned it trying to get though all you videos as you know there's alot take care
Where do I find a splitting ax, all the spots I’ve checked only have chopping axes. I normally split with a 6lbs maul. I use the flick technique with the maul and works great!
If i had so many so good trees, i would make boards and bars. 2021 (Corona) Germany was victim of some hedgefonds they tock a big part of the timber / neadle wood from the market, then there was allmost no construktion wood on the market, we had to use old board and bars or overthink the whole construktion and buy or scavange construktion iron.
You wield an axe with the confidence of a Jedi with a lightsaber. Love to see it. Ever have an Axe-ident? I had a minor one earlier this year, lost track of foot positioning and where the axe would go if I missed, and then I missed. Teeny little nick on my toe and a ruined sneaker (I know, I know, and now I wear my boots even if it's too hot. Basically, if it's too hot for steel-toe, it's just too hot to be working with the axe much.) It was just a big scare, but it could have been so much worse. Ever have an oops to get where you are skill-wise?
Am I missing something? Is there another site or service where you are building axes and handles? Haven't seen the forge for a while. Is the BBR bullet being crafted?
My 7th axe is a double bit and I love it! Can't wait to get another...love the burned handles and the Watco./Watka. Tinman got me hooked on saws and you got me hooked on axe's! I like the short block too, but i also like to split on the ground if possible. Thanks Buckin for all the great video's.
My kids like to walk around the house and say “buckin billy ray” all night because they say it sounds like they’re cursing 😆
I'm gonna adopt that for when I'm more on the angry side of things.

Greetings from Germany 👍😀
Hello friend
Man, the profile on that axe is beautiful.
I like it too!

Have you gotten your hands on a 592 yet?
Kind regards
Lachie
Damn, Billy, I got tired just watching you bust all that wood!!👍
Good video
Good evening bud hope all is well
Spread the love 👍
1 John 4:7-10
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Amen brother!
I don't know how you do it Buckin, I bucked and split wood for 4 hours non stop yesterday and hurt so bad when I got home and I was even using a 25 ton splitter.
Prefer a higher block for a few reasons:
Like to strike the wood when the axe is near to horizontal, axe energy is in the vertical. When it's too low, the axe begins it's swing toward you; a few times it's followed through to my feet or shins...
Also depends so much on the type of wood; pine is easy peasy lemon squeezy - try splitting something tougher, like Acacia in Italy...
we don't use pine . Our pine is Not easy like yours. There's no pay off in heat with pine.
Love is Gods greatest commandment. It is the most important thing.
Id love a woodbullet wit a 36in. I like the longer handles. Hope all is well sir
Been using a chopping block and a Granfors Bruks spitting maul for 20+ years. Use the chopping block to protect blade and safety concerns.
Young bucker at 1:17! Still looking good, Brother!
oh i was a problem back in the day lololol
Billy if you didn't have the option of the bullet head what would be your pick on a single bit axe head for all around use falling chopping splitting is a favorite brand you have same for a double head Thank you in advance
Sorry if you already mentioned it trying to get though all you videos as you know there's alot take care
Where do I find a splitting ax, all the spots I’ve checked only have chopping axes. I normally split with a 6lbs maul. I use the flick technique with the maul and works great!
Thanks Ron♥️♥️
Thank s

Immer am arbeiten.....
Guter Mann
If i had so many so good trees, i would make boards and bars.
2021 (Corona) Germany was victim of some hedgefonds they tock a big part of the timber / neadle wood from the market, then there was allmost no construktion wood on the market, we had to use old board and bars or overthink the whole construktion and buy or scavange construktion iron.
I have too many rocks in the dirt out here and Im too new to splitting to prevent dings on my edge without a block lol
good man keep it up, enjoyment and heart rate are the goals. heat is the by product
OK I love a double bit, just saying a chopping and splitting 7lb bucking special on a 36 maybe a 42. I'd buy that.
you need to send SAM PILGRIM some cookies he can turn into mountain bike wheels and shred!!!
Best chopping block wood would be American elm. It's grains is like cotton balls in fiberglass resin 🤣🤣
Ever have an oops to get where you are skill-wise?
i nicked the back of my head with a short handle double bit a couple years ago , it was funny as heck
I can see using a low chop block if your axe is goin’ straight thru, to keep your axe from hittin dirt and stones. 🤔🤷♂️
Wow I never knew there was hope beyond my maul to bust up fir . It's all I've known after trying my buddies axes and all they do is stick in the wood
do you get carpal tunnel or trigger finger from this work?
Am I missing something? Is there another site or service where you are building axes and handles? Haven't seen the forge for a while. Is the BBR bullet being crafted?
Yer missing alot
I like to play with my wood too Buckin! 🪵
You can take a double bit axe slam it into a log deep. Then flip ax and log and slam it into another log. Then use another axe to get from the top
❤️✌️
