Pinned post for Q&A :)
Why were the Germans so keen on sending heavy forces without proper enough destroyer and light cruiser escort and why that if they send them with it almost all Break up and go so far away from the ship that needs escort as in the case with Scharnhorst
What factors go into designing capital ship top speeds beyond 'faster than our enemies'? Eg, aircraft carriers are veritable speed demons in part to help launch their planes; were there such non-chase considerations for battleships and their ilk?
May I issue a video idea: the living and working conditions of the crew, espicially the ones in the engine department. "Working your stokers to death" - what was it like to be a stoker?
A bit of an odd question I think, but nevertheless... What do you think the role of submarines might be in either world war assuming torpedoes had never been invented? And what do you think the navy as a whole might look like?
Why did the Protected/Armored Cruiser terminology get dropped in favor of Light/Heavy Cruiser? The Scout/Light/Heavy Cruiser designs feels like a modernized renaming of Unprotected/Protected/Armored Cruiser anyway, so is there any fundamental change of context?
Warspite may not have been preserved as she so richly deserved, but at least she and Enterprise are sharing drinks in the afterlife bar exclusive to the "Literally everybody tried to sink this ship, but only her own nation's bureaucrats could succeed at it" crowd.
Tbh I do not enterprise is as good as Warspite, Enterprise mainly got lucky throughout the war. Big example of this is that SHE was so close to being at pearl harbour at the time and would of most likely been sunk there. While Warspite did a lot more through out the war and has a few more claims to fame than enterprise.

Damn right she is a fighting ship who went against the worst of the German Navy. She isnt (and Didn't) go down or sink on anything but her own terms.

weldonwin Love those books, been listening to the Audiobooks of them several times over at this point, damn entertaining and funny (which is a rarity for WH40k novels).
Run yourself aground if you have to!
My Dad was a CPO on the Barham when it was torpedoed. As they were not at action stations, he was merrily walking back from having a shower with only a towel wrapped around him, when he felt the loud thump of the torpedoes. His recollection thereafter is somewhat hazy, but he remembers the ship listing very quickly and the order to abandon ship been given. He remembers scurrying down the slide of the ship, trying to avoid the flesh-ripping barnacles and getting into the water just before it exploded. He was injured but thankfully picked up by one of the escorting destroyers. He always considered himself fortunate to survive, especially as if they had been at action stations, his position was way down in ‘the bowels do the ship’ where exiting would not have been an option.
He also later heard a story of the ship’s chaplain, who was last seen pushing past evacuating seamen to go down to the ships brig to release the prisoners. Although not a religious man himself, he thought this was an incredible act of selflessness.
"and we steered around in a circle (Yeah I was wondering if any of Warspite's crew heard that before)"
10/10 I laughed
Captain Packer was an assistant gunnery officer on Warspite at Jutland, so... yeah. "The circle is now complete".
My dad served on HMS Warspite from March 41 to May 43 in the Mediterranean and he said that he always felt safe with her no mater what.
Fantastic. What a claim to fame! I'm not surprised, Warspite was aggressively protective of her and hers.

I had the good fortune and privilege to visit the current HMS Queen Elizabeth twice. It struck me that, entering the wardroom, there was a striking photo in B&W of her predecessor front and center to the hatch. In a place of honor to the wardroom, was the old ship's bell mounted and polished. Very classy and a fitting tribute to a fighting ship of the past with a link to a first rate ship of the present. The Royal Navy traditions stand the test of time.

I LOVE building models. Back in 2015, when I was in hospital for months, my aunt had asked me if I wanted anything to help keep me occupied while there and I commented how it would have been the perfect time to build 1/700 scale models. She asked me if there was any I wanted, and I asked for the Tamiya 1/700 scale HMS Hood with E Class destroyer as it was the first model I ever built as a child of age 8 and did a great job on it looking back. Of course, my father being who he was, ALWAYS threw out my models, drawings as to him, the models were mere TOYS and my drawing would never get me anywhere in life so thought I shouldn't waste time. Now that I am an adult with my own money and a home, and with a very understanding wife who bought me HMS Barham. When my aunt was ordering, she asked me about several other models she had seen which were HMS Barham, and HMS Repulse. She got me the Tamiya HMS Repulse too and I hadn't even asked for it. lol So with CA glue and appropriate paints, fine grain sanders, a wonderful hobby knife as well as sprue cutters and tweezers, she must have spent around $80. I had finished them before I was out of hospital. From there my "fleet" grew into a great 1/700 scale armada. I built HMS Hood (1941 version), HMS Renown, HMS Lion, HMS Princess Royal, HMS Queen Mary, HMS Tiger, HMS Warspite (both 1915 and 42), HMS Queen Elizabeth (1918 and 41) HMS Invincible, HMS Dreadnought, HMS Indefatigable, HMS Prince of Wales, HMS King George V, SMS Derflinger, SMS Lutzow, SMS Von der Tann, SMS Seydlitz, SMS Blucher, SMS Bayern, SMS Konig, SMS Kaiser, KMS Scharnhorst, KMS Gneisenau, KMS Bismarck, KMS Graf Spee, KMS Prince Eugen, USS Maryland, USS Arizona, USS Yorktown CV-5, USS Enterprise CV-6, USS New Jersey, USS Antietam, USS Forest Sherman, USS Hopper, USS Momsen, USS Lassen, USS Mobil Bay, IJN Kongo 1914 battlecruiser, IJN Kongo 1944, IJN Mikasa. They have ALL got the photoetch detail sets, including the rails. I found Dark Ghost Grey does better when it comes to painting a ship. The actual colors ships were painted do not scale down very well and they look much darker than they would have at full size.
I also have a 1/350 scale USS Forest Sherman, USS Momsen, and HMS Hood. The Hood is a fun project of mine as I have added a bunch of modern weapons. 4 Harpoon missile launchers, 4 Tomahawk cruise missile launchers and 4 CIWS Phalanx turrets, and Mk-29 Sea Sparrow Missile Launchers in the spots where those USELESS UP rocket launchers were mounted and the left over radar domes from the Arleigh Burke models as the detail kits have BRASS radar domes, so the plastic domes are on various spots on Hood, but nothing really intrusive. It really does look like a modern day refit that kept the beautiful aesthetics of the original. hahaha
Yeah... I had a lot of time in hospital and then months recovering to build all those ships.
Could you send photos of the modernized HMS Hood, please?
Wow, you just described my childhood. I grew up in an orphanage, and someone bought me a model of the USS Arizona, and it took off from there. You're story made me smile and brought back memories long forgotten. Soon my room at the orphanage was filled with American navy task forces. I wouldn't settle for one model of a class of ships, I had to every ship of the class! To a fellow modelist, thank you for the memories.
The fact that they didn't atleast save Warspite as a museum ship should count as a war crime

The British have always scrapped everything. Sometimes basically new stuff! Sometimes really useful stuff. And some of the most historically valuable ships on this planet! I could go on. We Americans manage to hang on to some. Back in the '70s Jimmy Carter wanted to scrap the Iowas. Passive agressive stalling by the Navy and a HUGE public outcry prevented it.Thank God!
@@daleeasternbrat816 it's a side effect of having alot more history than the US. We have to pick and choose alot more carefully, since our preservation budgets include castles, churches, ancient ruins, you name it, we have it to preserve. Which is great, but it also sucks that it chooses us to pick and choose.
Also, we've as country never developed a major attachment to a really big ship, we never needed to, as historically we had more of them than anyone else so we developer attachments to fleets instead. And more recently, we abandoned bigger fleets & massive ships quicker than most once we realised, we really don't need them. Without an empire and major overseas holdings, you really don't need to spend the effort, money or manpower to make yourself look tough, especially since it's been 75 years since there was a real large scale conflict that justifies them. Thank you for a detailed report on one of the most important and powerful classes of Battleships ever completed.
HMS Warspite seems to have had an extra special level of protection built in given her legendary ability to survive damage which would have sent many a lesser ship to the bottom.
That model is awesome Drach and I am both envious and jealous of it. Take very good care of it and if by some impossible to understand reason, you get tired of it, put me down as someone who would be delighted to offer it a home.
I used to build those Airfix models when younger but my skills were never of this caliber, and my eyesight has deteriated too much to ever hope of doing so again.
I would argue that QE class is the first battleship with a fully integrated FC control suite.
Director, Dreyer table mk IV (which has an automatic and helm-free rangekeeper, also with bearing and range plot which allowed director setting to be continuously updated. Only ballistic calculation are not integrated), a gun control tower with director, range finder and control officer combined. And finally 15ft RF on all turrets
HMS Barham proved to be one of the most accurate of the capital ships of either side at the battle of Jutland, and the class generally proved very effective.
Nicholas Wong I would argue that saying “FC control suit” is like saying fire control control suite...a suite that controls fire control. But why would anyone waste time arguing about something that doesn’t matter.
@@rtrThanos for the lols?
Actually, Warspite isn't quite gone, even today. There's still substantial parts of her buried in the mud at Marazion, including not only her boilers but also, as I understand it, her keel and much of her double bottom. There are fragments of her ashore too, including a chunk of her armour belt preserved by the salvage company Macsalvors, quite a lot of timber incorporated into various buildings, as well as other relics like her ensign, ship's bell and ship's wheel. A shame all of those remains couldn't be brought together in one place and turned into a Warspite museum, maybe incorporated into a full-size concrete replica of the ship (see USS Illinois replica battleship for an idea of what I'm talking about). I know it will never happen, the cost would be prohibitive and the engineering challenges of recovering what's left of the hull would be enormous, but in an idea world it's something I'd like to see.
Not forgetting Warspites' chapel door in Royal Navy museum in portsmouth. My great great uncle was the chaplain 😁
And a couple of million razor blades

December 1941 was a really bad month for Allied battleships... Pearl Harbor, Force Z and the Alexandria Raid. 4 lost for good and 7 knocked out of the war for months (sometimes years).
Great month for aircraft and frogmen however^^
3 bb lost bc repulse is a battlecruiser
Shame the Japanese killed Prince of Wales
Actually, 1941 was a very bad year for the Royal Navy, as they lost in time order, Hood, Ark Royal, Barham, PoW, Repulse sunk. Then the Alexandria raid with Pearl Harbour.
Imagine if the explosive charge meant for Eagle did not end up on that tanker. Instead, it would have been also attached to Queen Elizabeth. It might have knocked out the ship from the war and the registry.

The Queens were stately vessels imo, those 15" dual turrets are awesome
Thank you for this video.
I REALLY like this class.
To me, the QE class is the Royal Navy's first, truly modern, battleship class.
The earlier classes all had goofy wing/mid ships turrets PLUS were too small/slow to ever be anything but stop gap ships (even the Iron Dukes).
These also might be the first truly, modern battleship class...period.
Powerful guns, decent armor and solid speed.
If they had been given state-of-the-art boilers during the late 1930's - they might have been able to go 27-28+(?) knots and thus be thoroughly modern (with radar) battleships.
Not top-of-the-line. But excellent second line/carrier escort ships.
Not bad for ships designed before the First World War.
They were Dreadnoughts tho
But by the standards of their time the Iron Dukes (for example) WERE truly modern and all that. Compared to other navies' battleships of the early 1910s the Iron Dukes were of a good size speed for a heavy battleship (although not remarkable for either quality) and were more heavily armed than their intended opponents.
@@jmcc4566 Yes, but they laid down the Iron Duke just 9 months before laying down the QE. So surely they were designing the QE before they began the Iron Duke's. So obviously they would have known that the QE's (and the USS Nevada) would instantly render the Iron Duke dated at best - obsolete at worst - the day it was launched.
Considering how incredibly expensive battleships were and the fact that Britain already had a huge dreadnought lead on Germany...I think the Iron Duke's were a silly build...just KGV's with 6 inch secondaries...which in turn were just bigger Orion's.
You have your opinion.
But, to me, the Queen Elizabeth was the first, truly modern battleship.
@@mk_gamíng0609 Super dreadnoughts.
@@McRocket In my fantasy world the Iron Dukes were regunned with eight 14 inch cannon suppressing the center turret and replacing it with new boilers and turbines like the Queen Elizabeth. The result QE lookalike with 14 inchers capable of 26 knots.
wrt the attack in Alexandria, Valiant was not hurt as badly as QE because the mine was not placed ideally. The Italian mines were suspended on a cable under the ship. The cable was supported by clamps on the ship's bilge keels. In the case of the QE, the mine was placed ideally, only a few feet under the hull. In the case of Valiant, the pilot of the "manned torpedo" the frogmen were riding lost control and it jammed into the mud below the ship. The back seater passed out from difficulty with his rebreather. The pilot could not manhandle the mine and cable system by himself, so set the timer and surfaced, with his backseater, where they were captured by the Brits. The mine was something like 20 feet below the hull, so did not do quite as much damage as it would have if placed correctly.
What an awesome and well storied ship. Also quite the story teller on deck. Thanks and enjoy the day!

Holy moly that model is amazing! I don't think I've ever seen anything like it! The only possible thing better would be a full on life-sized replica (some billionaire really should get on that).
Such a shame Britain did not preserve at least one of these magnificent ships as a museum. My grandfather served in the Pacific aboard battleship USS Washington, at least her sister ship the USS North Carolina was preserved and can be visited today in Virginia.
North Carolina is actually in Wilmington NC.
@@shaner9155 correct!
Excellent video model added nice touch
Fascinating video, and that is one beautiful model!
I personally liked the 1930s aspect best for aesthetics, but I understand the advantages of the updatings . I was amazed that the Warspite had so few dead and wounded from that German flying bomb ! Thanks so much !
Excellent study of the QE class. Very enjoyable.
Thanks for the video! I must agree with you on the photo-etch issue! Beautiful model , even without the railings!
Yes Drach, very nice model indeed. I must say it’s really too bad they didn’t save Warspite. Could you imagine walking outboard of the Belfast onto Warspite? I’d sure love to spend a few days down in her engine rooms.
Poor sailors on HMS Barham, R.I.P.
I hope it would have been quick!
Such enjoyable stories, told with aplomb. Thanks.
wow. That model is awesome. Thank you for the video.
I love the look of the "queen Anne mansion " style bridge.....it looks better than any other nations battleship bridges
Queen Elizabeth class were among greatest battleship ever made.
QE-Class is my favourite battleship class
There record were outstanding.
HMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Warspite
HMS Valiant
HMS Barham
HMS Malaya
I love this channel!!!! Thank you for all your work especially concerning the times..... Cheers!
Great talk and a fantastic model!
In this last drydock episode you mentioned that in footage of the sinking of HMS Barham you can see the boilers (or possibly debris from them) flying away. Could you post a picture where you circle them or something? I was trying to see what you were talking about but there's so much debris I'm not sure what I'm looking for.
Don't mind me I'm just commenting for the algorithm.
I love this guys video keep up the good work
Excellent service history of this incredible class of early Fast Battleships. The model of the QE is indeed a stunning example of precision art and I salute the modeler who made it. Very good job indeed.
My favourite class of battleship, to me, they are the best all round but then you have the Warspite, the Rocky Balboa of the battleship world, just have this vision of the ship, smoke drifting from damage, battle ensigns fluttering and a tiny voice shouting Adrien XD
Thank you for this video. My grandad served on HMS Malaya, amongst other ships, at the start of WWII. It’s great to have this additional information about one of the classes of ships he served on and helps to remember their contribution to our modern freedoms today.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't HMS Malaya the one that made the KMS Scharnhorst run away, or atleast I think it was the Scharnhorst
great video thanks
You never cease to not just impress me with the stuff you air on your channel, but you also tickle me with your humor as well. And this model is very realistic looking. I'm curious as to the size of the model???
1/350 scale :)
I have a, probably unatural, love of Warspite since I glued together a plastic Airfix model of her in my fromative years.
I am extremely jealous of your Queen Elizabeth Model, I have seen the most beautiful models of such ships during my visits to museums and I think this Class of Warship ranks as the best of its time.
Within the last few years I visited the Science Museum in London, for no particular reason and went very quickly to the top floor where I had previously seen, amounst other computing historical things things some lovely models of ships and boats but they were not there. I questioned a, whatever they are called, people who are supposed to know about this and was informed that they would be in storage somewhere.
I also recall many years ago being in the Navy type Museum, the ones with the guns outside, with my two small sons inching around a wonderfull display of Warships and behind us were and obviously German group admiring a model of Bismark whan my eldest son pointed to a model of Nelson or Rodney I cannot remember and asked about it and I replied, perhaps a little louder than necessary " That is the ??, it sunk that" pointing to Bismark. Silly I know.
Warspite: *spits at the Germans* Ya got anymore? Bite my shiny metal fantail and HAIL BRITTANIA!
Great model. Great episode. Thanks
Great Video & excellent Model!
I love how Drach says pom poms.
Last time I was this fast (first) it was when I smelled my pizza burning
You safrificed a pizza to Neptune. Hail to the waves!
You let your pizza burn! Just as we were starting to like you as well.😄
Great model , and great post ;)
Might not be exactly for this video but I just saw midway and thanks to you it made it so much more enjoyable
