    It is also worth noting that after following the bearing preload procedure, once you take the hub out of the frame again it is normal to have side to side play in the free hub body and end caps due to the floating axle design. I have confirmed this with onyx.

    I'm glad I ran across this video because I had no idea this was a thing. I ordered the Vesper hubs a few days ago and won't receive them for a couple of weeks but at least now I feel much better prepared.

      @@CoolBikeVidBro I got my Vespers but the hubs is different than yours. I have the lock ring that you use two 20mm wrenches to tighten the two parts together same way you do cup and cone axles. So it was a bit of a struggle to get the adjustment correct because every time I put my thru axle in and tight the hub had drag. I kept fooling with it and I think/hope I got it now. Obviously these hubs can't be shipped pre adjusted because everyone's frame spacing may be a bit different. These hubs are perfect for road bikes I.E. engagement, I felt that right away, and the silence was golden too. Now the only thing I hear is my chain while peddling.

      Interesting and I wonder if they updated the hub design. I loved my Vespers!

    Great video!! I’m in the hub shopping mode myself between the vesper and hydra. This was very informative!

      whats the different between them??

    • @CoolBikeVidBro
      @CoolBikeVidBro  Před rokem +1

      Vespers are silent, the Hydra are LOUD :) between the two Vespers have better engagement, but can feel squishy, Hydra’s aren’t instant (though pretty close) and make some fun noises.

    I have a ONYX Classic SS hub and never had that issue with axle interface to my drop outs. Perhaps it just happened to be in the correct spacing. Thanks for sharing this adjustment, it’s very important and helpful to know.

    Thanks for the heads up! I am about to pull for a gravel bike wheel set built with Onyx Vesper hubs. I'm looking for as much little nuances such as your video. Looking forward to your trail demo.

      Thanks for the comment! This is an important step to getting them setup right. I went and did a ride on them, but wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be. Might sound dumb, but I really like the wizzing of the rear hub so I’ll likely switch these out for a set of I9.

      I got I9 101 hubs on my backpacking rig (Bombtrack Beyond+)! I really like those too! Hydras or 101s you can't go wrong. I think the 101s (not that I have vast experience in MTB hubs) rolls great and the POE is handy for climbing. They sound really good too.
      I was on my gravel bike yesterday and I was missing the POE. The cheap rear stock hub tires me out.
      Post a I9 review when you change over!

      Will do! Looking to get a good set of rims with them, I’m a fan of the lifetime warranty of some companies as I’ve broken a set of carbons before. I’ll keep you posted!

    Man I wish onyx did a better job at getting this info out their service videos are absolute garbage.To make matters worse they turn the comments off. I’ve blown up a set of bearings (not cheap) I hope they eventually make some better tutorials. Great video!

    Finally, the video that I need. So a quick question
    How long you've been using the onyx Vesper Hub ?, and do you recomend it ?, i mean i currently looking for silent Hub, and as you know, most Hub came with that loud BZZZZZzz, Even wity the high end version. Then i stumbled to onyx, but i still confused about the quality of the hub and how long it'll last, i hope you able to explain it to me if this Hub is a worth to get, because looking for latest video about this hub is somehow pretty hard, idk why, do people dislike the hub ?,.
    Anyway, i hope i could get reply from you and oh if you don't mind, where do you get yours ?
    Kay then, Pardon me for intrupting, Wish you having a great week, stay safe and thanks for the video.

    • @CoolBikeVidBro
      @CoolBikeVidBro  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the reply! I can’t speak to the longevity of the hub as I ended up selling it for a set of i9 hydras, I prefer the loud noise. They are dead silent and from what I can tell, should be pretty bombproof. I ended up finding my wheelset through a local guy, they are hard to find right now. Good luck!

    Hey dude. Thanks for this review. I'm building a single speed and chose the Vesper. Will it be a hassle? Please give bottom line. I'm just a weekend rider, 170lbs, but climb steep rocky terrain. And I'm a bad mechanic. So please shoot straight. Thanks.

      @CoolBikeVidBro  Před 2 lety

      Apologies for such a late reply! Nope, I don’t think these things would be a hassle at all! They are pretty easy to service and are great hubs. That being said, I’ve moved over to Industry 9 hubs for the last year or so and don’t think I could be convinced to go back to anything else.
