We need to have more people like you that take pride in what they build and I have been watching your videos from the beginning and I can see you are one of the top gunsmiths in the country and my next build I certainly would like to have you do it.
One of my target rifles is a 28 Nosler I had built. First barrel was a Benchmark. Got it shooting well without too much trouble. 0.25 MOA routinely and the best being 0.18 MOA. Barrel was done after ~ 1000 rds. Tried a KS Arms barrel. After 493 rds I removed it. No matter what powder/bullet/load etc that POS would not shoot. The frustrations you experienced with that 33xc I absolutely identify with. I have never had such an exasperating experience with something i am supposed to be doing for enjoyment. Watching you express your frustrations brought it all back. I wasted probably north of $2.5 K and many weeks trying to get it functioning. To no avail. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on another Benchmark barrel and 33 rds later I'm back to .25 MOA. Love your attention to detail and your conviction to the craft. You should document your experience in a book.

You would not believe how accurate this entire video is to my experience with my 33XC build!! Every single detail is almost exactly the same......however, every third or fourth shot i would get a clicker, after letting the gun cool off for just a few minutes it wouldn't click, until another 3-4 shots. Long story short i used a 1.250" barrel diameter (straight to the muzzle), after 60 shots through the gun and checking every thing you talked about (scope, loose rings etc.), changing load changing seating depth etc., it turns out my tenon was expanding creating the problem, I know this for two reasons, first reason; I talked to a very knowledgeable individual that has a lot to do with the 33XC and he explained from what he was told, by me, it was his belief the tenon was expanding then constricting back to original size. So, I used a Sharpie and covered an entire case, after shooting 3 rounds I stuck the Sharpied case in and you can clearly see the case expanded only the length of the tenon.... that's when I chucked the barrel in the corner and started over with a 300 Norma because i can use the receiver, trigger, scope and stock that i built the 33 around, just a new barrel, brass, bullets and powder (hopefully it's the best path for a long range hammer), fingers crossed. I have 33XC brass (100 pieces of Peterson), all the dies (by Wilson) they will also be sitting in the corner. Knowledge sometimes is expensive, now i know better and so does my gunsmith.
I can´t agree with you more sir, i have shot three thousand reloads through my weatherby 308 "sub moa varmint" and it couldn´t get not even .6 consistently.....my 308 savage 12 f/tr almost same thing, i´m around 1590 shots and can´t get it to shoot and all this from 2009 to today. It´s like you said: "you can waste years searching the magic load" but the truth seems to be some barrels just won´t shoot. If i wouldn´t be living here in Argentina ( a gun ban country ) i would be right away sending you my money to build me one of your rifles. Thanks for this excellent video sir !!
I had a button rifled hand lapped barrel on a custom build awhile back, very well known brand barrel, that shot like that no matter what I did until it reached about 80 rounds through it. I cleaned every 20 rounds. Then, for reasons unknown to me, it then shot nearly one hole groups with Factory Hornady ammo in 3 shot groups for the next 10 groups. Handloads are just as good or better. No clue why that particular barrel took so long to work but it finally did
@@quarterminutemagnums If I were the customer in the situation you're in, I'd pay you in full for all the extra work because I'd want the rifle to be a one-hole shooter. If it takes extra work and another barrel, so be it.

I understand your frustration. I recently started working on two Remington 700 7mm Magnums that a customer could not get to shoot. Pulled my hair out for several days. Best I could get was 2"+ groups with all my fancy load development tricks. Finally. I checked the action screws. They were at 45 inch pounds. Tightened them in 5"# increments and the groups got smaller and smaller until I got to 65"#. These rifles were bedded by a so called professional and some goof in his garage (that's me) got them to shoot. They are still factory rifles and are not going to produce the groups that you and I are looking for, but they will work very well for the customers' needs. I cannot charge them for the amount of time I put into the rifles and that stinks. But I am happy that I could get them the accuracy that they required.
So far I have great luck with Bartlein barrels. I know some people in your situacion they put a tunner to make the rifle shoot better. I like your search for excellence and perfection, the way it should be! God bless you Sr.
I had a 260 that drove me nuts about 6 years ago. I learned his lesson with a recent 6 ARC and quit fast -sent to the manufacturer. Not stubborn anymore
I like your work ethics! I don’t build guns but I’ve bought and reloaded for 50 years. Trying to make these rack guns shoot quarter minute are almost impossible for me. Once in a while, I’ll get a 6 mm BR behind a old Cooper model 22 and get lucky.. I’m at the point in my life where I wish I had of contacted you and not go through all the headaches and expense of buying and selling these rack guns!

308 win rifles for some reason are more likely to humm.... keep up with the vidios surely it will pay off in the near future,i saw one and was hooked .
It's great you have high standards for your business and I believe your right. Many "builders" are just playing Legos. Many manufacturers also send a target that certifies that their guns shoots. Sort of a guarantee but if you can't shoot that size group, it's your bad. lol I can't afford a rifle like you build and don't have anywhere to really shoot one in Ohio. Why your phone isn't ringing? I believe it's the times. Another guy says barrel blanks are hard to get now and that some manufacturers are 18 months behind. So it sounds like a tough trade at the moment. You might be better off starting from scratch and selling that rifle as a second?

I truly feel your pain. Ive fought bad barrels before. Its infuriating. Swap scopes, stocks, multiple powders, bullets, primers, brass, etc. Im currently in a fight with an AR10 Lilja .308. (First precision gas gun) I recently moved and havent setup my reloading room yet so im using 8 different match factory loads. It will not shoot less than 1.300 consistently. I will break out my dasher, or ultra mag to renew my confidence that its not me. I hope it works out for you.

Brother, admire your dedication to excellent, no perfect perfection in the quality of the guns you build. If i could afford a custom-built gun you sir would be the man i would hook up with. I feel your frustration/aggravation when you do every thing right, but the end product does not come out that way. There is no dought that gun will shoot 1s or 2s when you are finished with it.
I reckon you've got a crammed action in the bedding. I think there's a gap behind the recoil lug. I've had 2 rifles with that issue & very similar results. There only has to be half a thou & the action will cram, especially with a heavy recoiling beast like that.
@@quarterminutemagnums well with every respect, but with a patch you cant measure the slug with a micrometer, and also the feel woth a slug is totaly different, as once lead is compressed it will not spring back, so after every tight spot in the bore you can feel the slug geting loose, also variation in twist you could feel. If a barrel aint feel right when pushing a slug through, it goes back into the box and the postman will bring it back where it came from. I never chamber a barrel, before i sluged it its a 10-20min job which prevents a lot of husle afterwards. And i can also feel there a barrel wants to be crowned like that.

@@quarterminutemagnums well it is time consuming, and I do benrechst work only so it must be part of the process, and I apologize for my first a little rougher comment. But then you are right not all problems can be found with sluging. And also problems can be found which are no problems at all. Like a little rougher spots in the bore feel dofferent when pushing a slug through it.

I agree, that's not good enough for a $9,000 gun. I have a Tikka CTR that will consistently shoot sub 1/2 MOA groups, it was like that out of the box too. I'd also be furious if a custom rifle was shooting like that.

Love hearing you go off! Seems like you are OCD as you should be in your line of work...why not just stick the borescope in and check out the bore? You said the patch came out strange...get the borescope video and post it. If the barrel is bad, the scope should show it.

But, most are able to get into PRS and long range target shooting. Do you build guns for that? I have a factory Tikka that holds 0.6 MOA out to 300 yards with factory ammo...I'd like to improve that. @@eee2115 Dear Sir - we will build whatever the customer requests, provided that the finished product will meet our standards. As for factory gun work, sometimes we do jobs for local guys, or if the project makes financial sense and will produce expected results. Thanks........P.S. We have built heavy guns that would put five shots in less than 1/2" at 400 yards.
It's almost hard to make a good barrel shoot bad, it's hard to make a dud shoot good and will probably never shoot great. You usually know within twenty or thirty rounds tweeking a known good load if you have a shooter. You gave this one every opportunity. But I would go over the bolt assembly just to be sure before I would condemn it. Just like with the scope, assume it's bad until you check it. But since you was getting low SD's I highly doubt it.

@@quarterminutemagnums that's the good stuff right there. Daggum particular a$$ rifle 🤗 the 33xc seems like a winner to me. Been a huge fan of the Lapua Magnum for a good while. But have never bought one. 1000 yds isn't something I can ever stretch it out to, so it just seems like a waste. But if I ever can, it's going to be a tough choice between the two. 🤗
maybe you are hyper focused in the wrong area. did you re check the torque on your action screws? or just throw some random factory ammo through it and see what happens? It could be a lot of things! From gun parts, loads, to a poor day of shooting. But I know, a custom gun should shoot a lot of different loads really good. You should have quit shooting at thirty and left. That is on you! You have been doing this along time. Getting that upset will cause a heart attack.
My cryogenic barrel shot like that tell I got past 225 rounds that gun makes me look good now, I know that's a big expense for them rounds but considering the time you said you would have invested and the cost what have you got to lose?

Well instead of ranting, you should have sluged the barrel before chambering it. Because if there is a problem, it can be found like that.

I agree, that's not good enough for a $9,000 gun. I have a Tikka CTR that will consistently shoot sub 1/2 MOA groups, it was like that out of the box too. I'd also be furious if a custom rifle was shooting like that.

Love hearing you go off! Seems like you are OCD as you should be in your line of work...why not just stick the borescope in and check out the bore? You said the patch came out strange...get the borescope video and post it. If the barrel is bad, the scope should show it.

@@quarterminutemagnums Looking forward to that. I checked out your site, seems like your focus is long range hunting guns. Not that many people are in a position to do hunts like that as you know. But, most are able to get into PRS and long range target shooting. Do you build guns for that? I have a factory Tikka that holds 0.6 MOA out to 300 yards with factory ammo...I'd like to improve that. Do you work on factory actions? Thanks.
@@eee2115 Dear Sir - we will build whatever the customer requests, provided that the finished product will meet our standards. As for factory gun work, sometimes we do jobs for local guys, or if the project makes financial sense and will produce expected results. Thanks........P.S. We have built heavy guns that would put five shots in less than 1/2" at 400 yards.

It's almost hard to make a good barrel shoot bad, it's hard to make a dud shoot good and will probably never shoot great. You usually know within twenty or thirty rounds tweeking a known good load if you have a shooter. You gave this one every opportunity. But I would go over the bolt assembly just to be sure before I would condemn it. Just like with the scope, assume it's bad until you check it. But since you was getting low SD's I highly doubt it.

a$$ rifle 🤗 the 33xc seems like a winner to me. Been a huge fan of the Lapua Magnum for a good while. But have never bought one. 1000 yds isn't something I can ever stretch it out to, so it just seems like a waste. But if I ever can, it's going to be a tough choice between the two. 🤗

It could be a lot of things! From gun parts, loads, to a poor day of shooting. But I know, a custom gun should shoot a lot of different loads really good. You should have quit shooting at thirty and left. That is on you! You have been doing this along time. Getting that upset will cause a heart attack.

My cryogenic barrel shot like that tell I got past 225 rounds that gun makes me look good now, I know that's a big expense for them rounds but considering the time you said you would have invested and the cost what have you got to lose?
