  • Take a walk with us and the many visitors to the 160th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg with Ranger Matt Atkinson and more for a unique retelling of the battles of Pardee Field and Culp's Hill. While Pickett's Charge remains the preeminent feature of the July 3 action, what occurred during the day at Culp's Hill was a critical part of the story allowing the Union to win the conflict.

Ranger Matt's presentation is never boring. And appreciate his kooky humor too

Good point. We'll correct that in the future. Thanks for reminding us.

Matt is a great tour guy. still not sure what is better the rangers or the Licensed Battlefield Guides. I usually prefer the guides since you can customize tours with them and the rangers do pre planned tour for certain things and you go meet them and they only do groups on their scheduled place and time.

After recently walking the battlefield, I realized that Cemetery Hill and its 40-50 Union cannon was the real prize on the Union's right flank. Culp's Hill was a fools errand. It was like climbing up a sheer rock wall on a mountain and the Confederate assault was doomed to failure before it began. Easy to say in hindsight but if the Confederates take Cemetery Hill they win the battle- simple as that.

Yup... and they only attacked East Cemetary Hill once... with two brigades... in darkness. There was nothing but shattered 11th corps units there for a while. That was definitely THE position. Cemetary Hill is no cake walk either... the ground the Louisiana and North Carolina troops attacked over was Bullsh**

No ring on his finger: Pastor of the largest church in US told me personally: "marriage is a gamble at best". Takes 2 to make a marriage work; takes only 1 to ruin a beautiful thing.
