Been a spin cast angler for decades (after irreconcilable differences with an antique bait caster some 40 years ago). And I'm probably the LAST person they should learn from, but my kids now want to learn about bait casters and they even bought a couple of nice ones. Needless to say, I've been struggling (again) and the videos do help me understand whats happening and how to practice correctly. It makes a difference - thank you

For a beginner I would set the centrifugal brakes to 3/4, set the spool tension until you get no side to side spool play, I would load 30-50yds of line on the spool and then I would practice casting. Using my thumb to feather the spool and stopping the spool before the weight or lure hits the ground or water.
Start with short casts as you learn how to feather, and gradually increasing the distance. As you become better at feathering you will be able to lower the centrifugal brake and the mag brake will help with wind. Baitcasting is an art and takes time. No easy shortcuts, a tight spool tension will limit your casting distance.

So, if you have adjusted to where you're getting limited backlashes but your cast distance is not to your liking, its the spool tension knob that will increase your distance ?

Bro today's my birthday and I had a baitcast reel before, and I was good at it, but the backlash on my new Abu Garcia was a lot, and I had no clue why. So I watched this and I found out that the reason was because I had the thing on the left to 1 so I did it to 10 and it was perfect, and I wasn't even a noob, I just didn't know what that thing did. I was soooo stressed about it and you relieved all of that stress. Thank you so so so much for this video

When the reel feels like it's going to backlash at the beginning of the cast it's the brakes. When it wants to backlash at the end of the cast it's the spool tension.

You can also make a parabolic cast by turning all brake to max than and spool tension loser than what you mention.
basically you rely on the brake than spool tension.

    Have a kastking Spartacus...
With this the centrifugal is on the spool. I can't seem to get it to throw lighter baits. Further, don't really know which settings or should I say combination of settings to have. As 1 to 6 centrifugal and min to max on mags. (0 to 20 I think). Get impression that it's kinda too complicated with so many options, and whether they actually work anyways .. ?

I don't comment much, but I know your frustration. Stick with it, you'll get it. My Spartacus Plus is one of my favorite reels and I really enjoy using it. I use the KastKing 10 Lb. braided line, ($14.95 for 300 yds.) Have no problems casting just about any weight I use. I use a 7 foot med/hvy. Fast tip rod. I can keep both brakes on the 7 to 9 settings for about everything. I use the spool adjustment, thumb feathering of the line and variable strength of cast for most control. Once you get use to your own style of control it becomes second nature without even thinking about it. I don't exactly know how to explain it, but you'll know when you get there. That's just my way of doing it. Backlash no longer exists for me. Rarely ever. Practice, practice, practice. You'll end up loving it. Unless you got a bad reel.
      Good Luck!

No, Royale Legend II only come with magnetic braking system, if you are looking for a baitcaster that comes with centrifugal and magnetic braking system, I recommend you the MegaJaws baitcaster upgraded version with AMD braking system that can avoid backlashes. I think you have the switch position backwards. Out is on and in is off I think? I was just looking at mine and agent he tab is pushed out it allows a plastic piece to come out which rubs and slows it down. When pushed in the plastic piece is locked and doesn’t come out.

i'm fed up with twisted line with a spin casting reel. Also have some nerve and strength issues with my hand and fingers after 3 spine/neck surgeries over the past 20 years. I believe a bait caster setup might be easier for me. i want to set my royale legend for the lightest lure possible with the longest casting performance. I know the type of rod I use will be a factor, but which type line would be best (mono, braided, fluorocarbon?) and could I get away with 6 lb test or would I have to use 8 or 10? I guess my target fish would be 14" to 18" river smallmouth and casting shad darts for 16" to 18" shad (hickory, american) during the spring shad run. But also enjoy catching white and yellow perch with my 7 yr old. Thanks in advance for your advice. Anyone?

    • @KastKing
      @KastKing  Před 6 lety +1

Lighter line will let you cast farther with lighter lures. However, a spinning setup is your best bet for that. To prevent line twists you must manually close the bail for the first step. This is the easiest way to get rid of line twists. Second is to only use braid. We are working on a video specifically for this issue.

Casting conditions constantly change. Wind speed and direction change. Brakes need frequent adjustment to achieve maximum distance and spool control. "Set it and forget it" is a myth.
But...anyone can get the hang of it. Time on the water is the best teacher.

Drag is for fighting with the fish right?

    • @KastKing

That is correct. When the fish makes a run the spool moves with the fish so you don't break off as much.

The best way to adjust any baitcaster is to have no spool tension and turn your brakes to about 70%. You'll get the longest distance possible, smoother drag operation, and reduced backlashes. Once you set it up like this you don't ever have to touch the spool tension again and rarely the brakes.
