  • Lest you think we've forgotten about Tesla's Model S in all the 3, X and Y hullabaloo, you'd be mistaken. Here it is, the 2019 Tesla Model S. And how could we forget with Ludicrous mode and that insane dual-motor power. There's so much more to talk about, too, so that's why Micah Muzio is here. Also, he impresses some friends with launches.

    Good unbiased review, We bought a Tesla model S 18 Months ago and agree with your comments. For many Years we have owned top of the range Merc's & Porsche's and agree that the interior is not as good, also putting all controls on the screen and layering them is stupid. Worse than that i had just got used to the main controls then on a software update they moved them all around, so now it's like getting used to a different car.
    If anyone from Tesla reads this, the main controls should be at the top of the display, more in your eye line as you cannot do it by feel like in a normal car.
    They should also be movable and sizable.
    The car has many more faults but i am prepared to forgive them all because overall it is by far the best car we have owned.

    Should remind viewers this is a 2018 model S. Vast improvements have been made on the raven 2019 S Performance. Range extended to 345 miles and another range extension is due within the next several weeks. Suspension has improved with either a softer and more compliant ride. Front motor was replaced with the more advanced motor of the Model 3. Yes, it is faster than the 2018 model.
    Tires have been replaced with Michelin which are better aligned with the ludicrous plus mode. One area is in the wheel bearings, which are now low-friction. Tesla also equipped the Model S with lighter low-rolling-resistance tires. Despite being low-rolling-resistance, Tesla says the tires offer better grip than before.
    Trust me I know, I own one.

  • @alliejr
    @alliejr Před 5 lety +11

    I think Micah shows us why the over-promised self-driving is a _LONG_ way away. Most modern cars have radar cruise (many down to zero MPH) and automated safety and I think that's the sweet spot safety/comfort/convenience set of features. Using basic radar cruise, you can commute while just steering (barely steering because there is no where to go except "straight") and the other automated safety systems will ensure the computer monitors you and keeps you out of most troubles. With Tesla autopilot, you are (unsafely) reading messages on the dash and monitoring the computer- a task for which humans are ill-equipped.

    • @stormbob
      @stormbob Před 5 lety +2

      I think Micah made a valid point that I hadn't considered with pointing out that you're still expending (if not more) mental energy to "drive" with Autopilot, but you're doing it in totally different ways that we're just not used to yet. Most experienced drivers are fairly good at it, but this requires you to pretty much start from scratch accumulating a totally new skill in the name of no longer performing an older skill (driving) that you're already used to. I'm not sure that self-driving vehicles have progressed to the point where they're worth it yet.

      I agree. What is the real-world difference between what used to be called "enhanced autopilot" and Honda Sense or the Toyota equivalent?

    • @jreOO7
      @jreOO7 Před 5 lety +1

      I can say that out of the traffic hell of a large metropolitan area & the associated system of mega highways... this would totally help me relax on a long trip & not be as tired when arriving at my sister's house 11hrs away. Now, it's not like you can sleep & wake up in your destination, but our brains do get tired from hours of a boring task & maybe letting the computer take an hour of boring straight lane travel will save us for the more complicated tasks (at least till most cars are automated & they all play nice together, lol)

    • @alliejr
      @alliejr Před 5 lety +1

      Joshua Epps Good points. I find that my radar cruise control and lane keep assist helps a ton on traffic-free long hauls. Feet and legs are free and barely have to hold the wheel. But I do have to continue to drive the car. The problem with autopilot is that it doesn’t really add anything useful to that mix. As Micah demonstrated, it’s a crappy driver on it’s own. That leaves the human driver to constantly monitor and occasionally intervene. Or even worse, as we’ve seen, Tesla idiots WILL doze off or drive inattentively. I think the best “in between” technology between yesterday’s cruise control and eventual autonomy is the current technology offered by almost every make and model. Tesla shows promise and hope for the future but it appears that future is a long way away given how poorly and dangerously the new “highway drive” feature drives and functions.

The sleepy cop now awakened from his slumber would most likely activate his emergency lights and initiate a traffic stop on the no longer smug Tesla driver.
