- ... for some reason, many Ohio plated riders just wouldn't move to one side or use the pull-offs. This guy got particularly upset as I passed ... he saw me for miles but hung left for some reason.
Safe riding, and let's all be nice to one another out there - James
Yeah, I’m with the guys that would pull over and let the faster sport bikes go. I’d rather enjoy the ride at my own pace.
Yeah, I’m planning a trip out there in the near future and I’m not planning on rushing. Hell, I would have pulled off and taken some pictures at the vista…
You wanna ‘conquer the mountain’ more power to ya. I probably woulda been right there with you like a decade ago. These days, I came, I saw, I bought a T-shirt, I went home and I ate some decent food on the way. Life is good. 👍
@@DrTranofEvil you have aged nicely sir imo
There are a fair number of Harley riders that bought their first bike later in life and aren't as experienced as their age might suggest.
100%
There is ZERO corellation between "experience" and skill. I have encountered a number of Harley-Davidson operators who claim to have been "riding" for 50 years, who don't actually know how to ride at all. Once they figured out how to get it rolling without stalling the engine, they just stopped learning. What they mistake for an advancing skill set, is in reality just them becoming more and more comfortable over time, with not knowing how to ride.
at 65 years of age just bought our first Harley, a 2019 Softail Heritage because I just wanted one, after almost 50 yrs of riding. Yes it is not the nimblest best handling machine I have owned and yes I will gladly slow down to let faster riders around me. Lets ride at our own pace and respect each other. Stay safe.
I'm like you except I've always ridden HD except once when I was 17 and friend's minibikes and dirtbikes when I was 14 and15. I fell in love with the 2018 Deluxe with all its chrome and bought it for my 66 BD. I don't like to ride much over the speed limit as I realize my potential shortcomings due to age. Whenever I see faster-riding motorcycles and even automobiles, I immediately pull over at the first safe opportunity.
5 years ago at 65 I was stopped at a red light and after 50+ years of riding I told the wife, “I’m done, time to get off”. Rode to the bike shop where I bought it and sold it back to the dealer, walked home. Picked up my gear at the shop the next day and took it to a thrift store. Don’t miss it one bit. My son asked me if I wanted to take his new bike out, said….nope couldn’t pay me to ride it.
@@petegregory517 Hey Barry, Most of the guys I ride with are younger.....I just tell them to take it easy on the old man!!! I respect your decision but I still enjoy riding and I'm just not ready to quit. Here in WV we have great roads and little traffic. When the time comes to hang it up I will have no regrets.
As a HD rider when riding the Dragon I slide to the side or even pull over if there are faster bikes stacking up behind me. No need to hold up everyone when riding a lead sled like a bagger.
Me too - back when I road an Ultra Classic, Gold Wing or this bike - I just slide right and enjoy the bikes going by. It's not a big deal. Cheers and have a great holiday weekend.
There's no need to pull over. If someone can't overtake you without endangering themselves. Then it's on them what they want to do.
@@expatbiker6598 Some places it's the law. Where I live even if you're going the speed limit, as soon as the fifth car stacks up behind you on a divided highway you're required by law to use the first turn out you safely can, or move to the right lane if a passing lane becomes available. Whichever comes first.
My expirence. Only hd riders are pricks.
@@djtomtrain2015 Really? Where I'm from the biggest assholes are on crotch rockets, although some of our worst riders here are on brand new HD's. There's a few big clubs here though so perhaps here people are trying to stay off radar. Only been messed with by groups of sports bikes here though.
Theres nothing wrong putting around, but some people have no consideration for others. Let faster riders pass and continue enjoying the ride.
Fuck off. Passing on a double line is illegal and dangerous. Person in front doesnt have to do a goddamn thing but keep driving. Prove me wrong, bitch. Im waiting.
Follow the speed limit! Stop complaining about slower riders when you are the one breaking the law.
@jamesadams2334 That's the same logic as someone who moves to a shitty neighborhood and then complains about their neighbors selling drugs and stealing their car stereo. If you aren't up for a brisk ride, stay off the dragon. 90% of the riders there are riding over the speed limit. You can ride like grandma on any public back road.
Most of Harley riders only know how to ride in highways, the Dragon’s tail is not made for them, big heavy bike with low clearance, they just keep slamming on the brakes as soon as they engage a tight curve, and some have to much attitude because the have an expensive machine between their legs
If you’re so skilled, why’d it take you so long to get around him? Don’t throw stones if you live in a glass house.
Not sure where you came up with me being so skilled. No stones thrown, just a bird flipped. Be well lobster-dude.
It took him so long because there are very few places that you can safely pass using the other lane, even if the guy ahead of you is dragging his diaper.
It's hard to overtake people safely in tight twisties especially when they speed up in the straights, which they always do. Plus it is illegal to pass on the double solid lines.
@@JamesScottSi You like videos I enjoy videos as well. Watch some of the bad crashes on mtn. rds. and think about it. You are not going to beat the mtn. The Dragon is not the place for lack of patience. Too much traffic. Many other rides better than the Dragon with far less traffic. Try the Wayah for a great ride with far less traffic. Many others up in the area just as tech. they just don`t draw the crowds. Oh and many have scenery that is what the dragon doesn't.
It’s hard to pull to one side when you don’t really no how to ride!
Exactly I agree I come up on someone like the I give them space.

I think the Harley rider was more upset with himself. Had he let you pass earlier everyone wins (both enjoy the rest of their rides). His mind was set to ignore you but that clearly didn't work for him. If traffic bothers you, you may want to try times that aren't as busy like early in the morning on weekdays. Remember the Dragon is a public road and a lot more dangerous than most realize. People can stop in blind curves, or even be walking on the road to pick up something they dropped. If you were to crash you may not be found for hours/days. Always a good ride when you and your bike return in good shape.
Hi Doug - good points - wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Cheers.
A man of reason. I go there with newer riders often the first thing I tell them is ride your own ride and don't be intimidated by others. I also explain there are pull offs but if you can not stop on them safely just pass it by. most have gravel on them. Never had anyone wreck that ride with me. I never intimidate a slower rider by running up on them. rather see them safe on the other side.
I think riders who try to show off on this road endanger all around them. May the Dragon take all the show offs down. Chrome rims are available for wheel chairs. Dumb a--es.
Yeah, I always flip other people off when I am upset with myself. 😀
@@steveoconnor7069 right this guys a clown lol dude literally just had to move to the right and wave him by like a normal logical person. fml lil dik energy.
I've been in this area and saw a cruiser bike going fast enough that I didn't feel like passing. I saw sparks from his footpegs at the apex of every curve, and watching him ride was more fun than passing him would have been. :)
It was a breath of fresh air after being stuck behind a slow-ass Harley for 15 minutes.
THe guys who do that on a bagger really know what they're doing. I scrape the floorboards alot, but I don't do it on purpose
I'm a floorboard scraper too. My left is getting like razor thin
: was the so called slow ass harley, slow or were you braking the posted speed limit attempting to show off like some small ass barking dog..
that sounds like the equivalent..
If you were a good rider then you wouldn't have been stuck behind him, get some lessons and learn overtaking manoeuvres
I've followed groups of harleys rider through there time after time. When they come behind a car moving slower than them the ride up his ass and rev their engines and make gestures when he finally moves. All the while I'm right behind them waiting to get by and they won't move over in the lane or use a pull off and they will hammer down as hard as possible on the few short straights. So apparently they go the perfect speed. If u are slower u are a jerk that needs to pull over but if u want to go faster u are an asshole on a crotch rocket who is going to fast. Mind u it's not all of them. Many are cool and polite and will move when the opportunity arrives. But plenty of them feel entitled so other people need to get out of their way but the don't need to move for anyone.
I own an HD in addition to several sport bikes but most HD riders are idiots lol-- they're good bikes for comfortably soaking up miles in style and with a great exhaust soundtrack(but thats literally it) but why anyone would take them on a super twisty road is making my point.
Cruisers are truly horrible at cornering worse than probably most crossover SUVs no joke. But want a cool looking motorized couch you can ride 1000 miles without being worn out that'll get lots of compliments and make a cool sound? They succeed at that!
It couldn’t be simpler: if a faster bike (or car) approaches from behind, look for the next pullout. When you see it, throw your turn signal on. The overtaking rider will pass in a couple seconds as you reduce speed slightly and swing ever so briefly into the pullout. If there are multiple faster riders, slow a little more as you acknowledge their appreciative “Thanks, Bro!” waves. Slide back out and proceed at your desired pace, content in your knowledge that you just maximized EVERYBODY’S enjoyment.
Exactly, well said 👍
Sigh...if only....
Ride up on an Angel and see what happens

I learned very quickly to pull over to the side first time riding the Dragon in 2017 on my FJR. It was a natural thing to do. Or he could just over take at the first opportunity and stop being a show off. Does that guy thinks he's fast? Pfff...
That stretch of road is now a tourist attraction, like DisneyWorld, and an expectation to go fast is unreasonable. Better to find another road, there's no lack of them. But if you're a tourist in a crowded place act accordingly.

This scenario is familiar to bikers everywhere. You're on a decent piece of road, perfect for motorcycling, but then find yourself stuck behind a slow moving tractor (The majority of UK bikers refer to Harleys as "Two Wheeled Tractors").
I can get past a lump of pig iron no problem, it's the tin boxes I have problems with.
Anyone in anything remotely SUV styled or an Audi (disproportionately driven by twats who will pull out to try and stop you filtering) and I know what's coming.
I've had a few instances of HGV drivers looking down the road and waving me past when it's safe.
Respect to the truckers!
Most British riders don't know how to lean their bikes over in turns
And most Europeans don't even own bikes over 300cc😂😂😂
Harley riders have a lot to be angry about. For starters they got hood winked into buying a slow, heavy dinosaur of a bike that is good for straight road cruising and pulling tree stumps out on uncle Jeds farm.! 😎👍

I ride with a couple friends regularly all over the country. One is from Kansas and he does not get much practice cornering, especially blind turns common to mountain areas. I always tell him to stay in his comfort zone and simply move to the right on straightaways if someone is faster. EZ and safe 👍

Absent a law stating otherwise, the Harley rider had no obligation to pull over for faster traffic. Sure it is frustrating, but the rider ahead may be riding at his maximum comfort level of speed for whatever reason. The faster rider had two choices to deal with the situation that would not have involved crowding the other rider in his own lane and possibly causing him to crash: either ignore the twin yellow lines and take upon yourself the risk of moving into the oncoming lane to go around him, or take one of the turnouts that you find so inviting and wait for him to leave the area at his own pace.

Realistically, only 50% of all vehicles (cars, trucks, bikes) actually use the many pull-offs at Deal's Gap. 2 decades ago, most visitors kinda knew the courtesy-rules of that road, but no more. My rule is that if the slower traffic fails to use the 3rd avail pull-off, then I use the next one and give them (and any other closeby sameway traffic) 30sec to 60 sec to get ahead instead of spoiling so much of my run. I always visit The Dragon with enough time to forfeit at least one or two runs to traffic and still run 2 or 3 passes from the Motor Lodge to the Scenic Overlook.

Hey mate. I was wondering if I could get your approval to use your clip in my yt shorts and compilation video. Thank you in advance bro!
Yes, use away. Cheers.
As my granddad used to say, "Some peoples kids, you can't take them anywhere!" That Harley rider was angry when he left the house, whatchya gonna do?
: being "crowded and buzzed without warning" didn't help the disposition either.
@@DTO.. He should have pulled off. He knew the GS rider was behind him waiting to go. The guy rode at a slug pace, crossed the double yellow on every left turn, counterbalanced (wrong!) rather than shifting body weight down, didn’t look through turns, etc. The hardley guy was a trash rider and should have pulled off or gone when it was less busy.

OK question: To let someone pass, do you actually pull off the road in one of the turn outs? Or do you ease as far right as possible, and slow up, let them squirt past on a straight? Whats the etiquette?
Hi Robert … me & most other motorcyclist I encounter scoot far right & waive the faster rider by. Cars, trucks & some motorcyclist wait to use the pull off. My opinion, the other person just do what is safe. And lastly & most infrequently my experience is this person who chooses to stay left & not use the pull offs.
@@JamesScottSi Cool, thanks. Pretty much what I expected.
I ease to the right to let them pass, or use a turnout if it’s handy. Live and let live is not that difficult.
I have passed and been past so many time there... I try to ride it pretty fast but there are some locals on superbikes that blow by everyone..
It’s nice to be important but it’s more important to be nicer.
Hi James, Patience brother which you exhibited. I like your set up cell, GPS and GoPros but I especially love your jacket which would go well with my K1300S, where did you get it from ?
Good morning - Revzilla is the seller / website and Olympia is the manufacturer ... thanks William and safe riding.
Whats the speed limit on the Dragons tail anyways
It's a mountain pass, not a race track. If everyone who felt like speeding expected everyone doing the speed limit to leave the road for them to pass, none of us would ever get anywhere...
I understand both sides of the argument. This same thing happened to me recently on TOD and I considered posting a video, but chose not to. They legally do not have to let you pass BUT it is a commonly held courtesy to wave a faster rider around when it's safe to do so, or to pull over. In my recent experience I thought he was a prick and he surely felt the same about me- two competing egos. The HD guy in front of me was pushing hard to keep from being passed (ego) and began clearly riding outside of his comfort zone (with a passenger). Watching my footage I concluded that I should have just pulled over (nope, ego) and let him get down the road before he and his girlfriend got hurt. Had he crashed I would not be legally at fault, but morally, yes. Next time I will pull over if a slower rider doesn't feel the need to be courteous- that's their right. TOD is an overrated scene for people to go for bragging rights, t-shirts, and bumper stickers. There are so many better sections of blacktop in the region with fewer riders and police patrols. The real problem with the Dragon is not slower riders who refuse to yield, it is riders pushing past their comfort zone who are unable to stay in their lane (cruisers and sport bikes). Forget ego games. Encountering that will kill you.
well said
You are not responsible for another persons riding level. He should have had enough sense to pull out of the way. I have been the fast bike(CBR600RR) and the slow Harley rider, and on my Harley I move out the way.
Well said. But I am always surprised that making it easy for faster vehicles to pass you is not a UNIVERSALY known courtesy (wether in a car, on a motorcycle, a mountain bike, snow mobile, horse, cross country skiing, or even walking up narrow stairs...
What’s the speed limit there? How fast was he going?
Just a quick question... whats the speed limit on the Dragon... haven't had the pleasure of riding it yet... just curious... Thanks... nice video..
Speed limit is 30 MPH - cheers
Every time I’ve ridden the Tail, I’ve gotten stuck behind entitled a-holes like that guy. Same type of person that squats in the left lane of the freeway.
My experience riding in general and the Tail is overwhelmingly positive. This moment for me is very much the exception.
Stuck behind someone doing the speed limit? I feel so sorry for you.
Well, we found out who the HD rider in the video is....
@@matfriske5548 also found out who's on the other side of the glory hole at the truck stop.
When he bought that Harley at the boutigue, they told him he was now a King of the Road.#1.
1.Don't let nobody go around you. 2.act like everybody else made a mistake and didn't buy a Harley. 3. HOG the left and make it harder to pass, even when that is the WORST line around a corner.
4. Pretend you don't know when a faster rider is approaching because you don't use mirrors and will feel like a pussy if you wave them by.
You know, same rules as if you are driving your oversized SUV.
yesterday we were a group of sport bike riders who caught up on a very slow team of HD riders, last one on a trike licking the yellow. We were behind them for a good 15 minutes, they did not give two F's and road in the middle of the road not letting anyone pass safely, so when the opportunity came, we throttled up to pass them. I had to get in-between them when a big rig came towards us, man did they get pissed. Fingers up, pistol hand gestures. What is wrong with these people, any normal individual would ride on the side of the road letting us pass in a safe manner, but no, not these idiots. They own the road on their 50hp 900 ibs machines, no riding gear except the huge chain holding their empty wallet after investing in the fake lifestyle machine.
Hell some sport bikes run as much as some Harleys.
Would I be able to use your clip in my compilation! I'll make sure to give credit!
Moto Mayhem ... yes, share a link when it drops. Thanks.
No
I have run into similar people riding, the Dragon included. I don't get it.... I'm thankful I don't have to deal with them on a regular basis. Imagine living next door to people like that.
I live near a 2-lane country road that I often ride. If I'm too slow for anyone I just pull over. If they're too slow for me they pull over. Nobody gets mad.
That's how it should be. Everyone wins. It doesn't need to be an ego thing. Sometimes people want to go faster than you for whatever reason, and sometimes you want to go faster than them.
I would suggest that both of you are at fault. In as much as the bagger guy was killing your ride as you were killing his. He could have moved over…also you could have backed off and maybe pulled over yourself for a bit. It’s a public road and he had as much right to the road as you. Cooler heads prevail.
Harley rider is watching the road and this nutcracker is on his ass giving him two things to worry about the road and the fool behind him either pass his ass up and get it over with or back down and stop tailgating.
Couch rider, and I have a HD , but like my sport bike on most roads, do you like the helmet??? I just bought a Himalayan and looking at the kilm helmets
Hey Mike - delayed reponse as I've been away a bit. I had issues with my Klim Krios helmet and the warrantied replacement. The inner safety layer separating from the shell. Given the poor build quality and experience I won't by anything Klim.
Hey man may I feature it? It'll be credited and linked back to your channel
Yes, you have my expressed consent to use. Cheers.

That’s the equivalent to cars going slow in the left lane on the interstate! Frustrating!
This is a 35 mph rode not the interstate

Going by his show of novice rider skills on a bike that's not agile, shows he's a middle aged first time rider thats trying to play 1 percenter. Probably the same kinda guy that has to take up 2 parking spaces with his GMC Denali that will never tow or haul so much as a bag of mulch. 😂

There is a mindset in the world, which wants to hold everyone else down to its lower level of functionality. Also, it rules the world.
Just rode through the dragon recently. Those cruisers don't pull over for nobody, no matter how slow they are.
Main rule is to NEVER cross the double yellow line. You could have pulled over and let the less experienced do the limit and enjoy his ride as well. That's what I would do anyway.
I haven't been on the dragon yet. When I do go I will go slow and pull over knowing there will be someone behind me itching to pass
Same here I ride a bagger and I just let them go no reason to be pissed
Ride the Dragon a few weekends ago on my KLR - beautiful day. Saw a lot of happy people enjoying the good weather. No accidents or anybody getting angry. Been riding my whole life, almost 70.

Was he not able to do the speed limit if so what was the problem 🤔 😕
Maybe he didn’t wanna pull over , just sayin u could have been just as courteous and rode his speed it’s not about the destination but the ride is what’s important
hello - true ... I was slingshotting there for a bit ... slow down, then speed up, slow down, then speed up ... all the while hopeful one could do the seemingly effortless thing and simply slide right for 5 seconds. It all worked out and we got to see the bird.
they have a mentality where they can't believe other bikes handle, brake, accelerate better, and are way more reliable. I've owned both, the HD has a chain welded to it at the bottom of a lake holding the buoy I tie my boat to
I would be asking if there was a problem with the steering on his bike or if it was the operator, just to see if he gets sarcasm.
Idk why cruiser riders even do the dragon. You can drive slow af on any public road. Ppl go there for brisk riding. Thats like going to the drag strip and running a pedal bike.
or complaining about the noise ! loll..🤣
I’ve encountered this sort of thing all over the country. Perplexing behavior especially our west where people in cars / trucks are used to using turnouts because that’s the local etiquette and not an assault on ones manhood
We can all enjoy our own level of riding with a little understanding and Courtesy.
The guy in front with an asshole you never passed someone in the same Lane whether it's on a bike or car where'd you guys get your license at
Those couches should never be allowed on any twisties. He'd not even last 2secs on the Mountain course.
Good day ... my first time riding in the mountains, and including US129, was in 2006 on a 2005 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic fully loaded and with my wife on the back. I was inexperienced and navigated the road slowly and safely within my limits. From 2005 to present, if there is a faster rider behind me, I simply slide right for 10-30 seconds so they can safely pass and I can continue riding my ride. My best friend rides an HD ... he also moves over. I welcome all on the road. Stay well.

Yeah, I find it really disturbing that so many people are defending the Harley guy. If you let faster traffic pass you, then everyone wins. It's clearly the best solution.
Harley rider is watching the road and this nutcracker is on his ass giving him two things to worry about the road and the fool behind him either pass his ass up and get it over with or back down and stop tailgating.
So getting passed is a slap against your what??? Why get pissed. People pass up there all the time, especially if it’s a weekend. No biggie.
It’s where you pass ... not how. I have an assortment of motorcycles from HD to Bmws.
Maybe a knock against his pride or ego

It's an Olympia ... not sure they still make this style/model ... dakar. It breathes well in the heat, protects and fits my chubby self well. It comes with some nice thermal layers too, for three seasons. Cheers from Florida.
I never want to be holding up anyone else's ride. I ride a supersport, but by no means am I a "knee dragger". I'd rather ride at my own pace without someone tailgating me, so I gladly wave them around.
I think you are right to be pissed, the guy was clearly an arse, there's plenty of room for two bikes to pass , take no notice of these armchair riders that say it's not ok.
The Harley rider was taking the best line for the curves, and I'd be surprised if he wasn't pushing the speed limit himself. To get angry at him is just being a dick.
The Harley rider had several opportunities to pull off and let the quicker bike pass, its what you do there. Shit, I ride a Harley and I would have passed that dude.
Just to be clear, I ride Harleys and if i see someone coming up behind me i always move over, if they choose not to pass then i move back out, but i always give other riders the opportunity.
@@MrHarleyoldfart Yeah, The idea is to have a good time, at least I think it is. Over the years I find myself riding the Cherohala or the Parkway more than the Dragon. I like being able to enjoy the view and the halfway point on the Dragon is about the only spot for scenery.
Fuck you. Never pass another motorcycle in the same lane, period. I don't care if he was doing 5 mph. That's how people get killed.
Given how all over the road he was I think he was beyond his abilities. A couple times he was over the divider. Not good
I agree with your assessment of his abilities but actually his tires were over the divider more than a couple of times, the rest of the time when he was on an outside curve if his tires were on the correct side his head wasn't.
Hi mate, would it be okay with you if I feature this in my compilation edition?

Either he was being a D or it took all his concentration to take the corners and didn’t have any left to give you room to pass. Usually at that point I take a chill and stand back a bit, give them the room to putter.
I live in this area, it’s so annoying how many out of town people come in and slow everyone down. We put the turn out spots in for a reason. Believe me, all of us locals are just as angry as anyone else. P.S. flat landers are the worst. Jk. Lol.
I agree with that flat landers comment. I got a good laugh. Overwhelming my experience with fellow riders is positive, and then there is the exception. I just happened to capture and post the exception. Be well - cheers.
Turn out spots are for emergency pull offs, not for hotdogs with a death wish.
Everybody is bashing the guy riding the cruiser he’s going the posted speed limit across that road. It’s not your personal racetrack. Do you expect people to pull over and let you go by when your driving your car on any other road? No you don’t. He wasn’t obligated to pull over and let you go by at any time, he has the right to travel that road as much as you, he just went the legal speed limit. Courtesy goes both ways.
Hi Darren ... if you look through the comments I think you'll find it is pretty equitable. The pull-offs are used by cars, motorcycles, trucks, etc. for faster traffic and are used frequently by some and not by some others - there isn't any obligation to use them. Lastly, his speed varied and was often under the speed limit. All that said, cool, ride your ride as safety is paramount. Allow others to pass or not, that is up to the individual. I'm in the camp allowing others to pass is cool. Wishing you and yours well and thanks for stopping by.
James Scott S Not saying your in the wrong or right. I personally rode this last weekend and we used the pull offs to let faster riders and drivers pass when we seen them behind us. My son who is just starting to ride was following me and we just about got ran over by someone on a non street legal super motard bike passed us in a curve. If it had caused one of us to wreck he would have never know it and would have been long gone. If I came across as being a dick I apologize, just that incident left a bad taste in my mouth and I will never ride it again. I’m not risking my life so someone else can ride like an idiot. Keep the shiny side up
@@darrenleonard339 ... ah, how cool to enjoy a ride with your son. I labor to pullover when someone is behind me, but I do it on my terms and when safe.
