Mr Lineker born in 1961 same as me. He really puts himself down. He was a wonderful striker for England and his clubs of which he played for some great clubs. His football knowledge is unbelievable and he always entertains me as i watched the same players that he did so i can relate to everything he talks about. Thankyou for lots of great memories Gary you are legend. PS. Rio Ferdinand. Best centre back i have ever seen play. Loved watching you at Manchester United. Thankyou Rio.

23:17 even with the injuries, he is definitely in the conversation. 3 FIFA World Player of the Year, 2 Ballon D'Ors, 2 World Cups, 2 Copa Americas, 414 goals in 606 games. League title in Real Madrids, multiple cup titles with Barcelona, Inter Milan and with Real Madrid. And before the injury, that cost him 2 and a half years of football, he was great. Then he changes his game-style completely and he was still unbelievable.

yeah he should be in the conversation without doubt. A lot of people only remember him after his injuries, when he was still great but nowhere near what he was in the years before. My favourite player of all time.

I think this is without a doubt the best guest you've had on. All of them bring something different and interesting but Linekers knowledge of football as a top player, and such an experienced broadcaster is unparalleled. He grew up on Pele, played against Maradona and has been broadcasting during the premier league and champions league era so he has seen it all. He's worked with so many top pundits and players his insight and stories are unrivaled. Big up all the vibe with 5 crew, big fan. Definitely worth getting Lineker back after the world cup/during the season as well.

Superb episode. Lineker was the classic striker back in the days when growing up in the mid 1980s (along with Ian Rush), but for England he always delivered.

Gary used the phrase... "beautiful/gorgeous" players... for me Rio Ferdinand was absolutely in that category. Played the game the way it should be played, ran it out of defence and up the pitch, had poise, character and ALWAYS wore the shirt. He was a brilliant player.

Amazing to have the wisdom calmness Gary has brought in this talk after all the craziness England fans have driven home since the draw. I do genuinely feel a lot better after him explaining his thinking onto why Gareth has done it. Gareth obviously has the job to get us through, not to dominate every game because that can go left. For us its banter against the Americans which we want to win but that's not even anywhere near what Gareth is looking at, so fair play.
His job is to win the tournament not just scrape through the group mate

Englands most underrated player , I’m 45 so when I was a kid Gary was at his peak and I was In ore of him . With his back to goal he was a beast , he could turn you in a second. I even think the term Fox in the Box came from him “specially as he’s a Leicester lad 🦊) .

Would like to start seeing some variation, we are starting to see alot of diversity in live broadcast punditry but the online channels still seem to be very male based.

To put it into context, R9 was just 23 when he suffered that terrible knee injury. He was tearing up every league he played in. People weren't talking much about zidane at the time simply because R9 was superior to him and everyone else. Injuries killed him from becoming the greatest ever player

Rio, u guy should do a show where u invite a legend and you compare players from the past to the players of the last 10 years, so the younger generation of footy fans can appreciate them more.
For example-
I believe Benzema over the last couple years is quite similar to Van Basten.
And Mbappe from what I've seen is a bit like Eusebio or Thierry. Etc
27:22 yeah the 80s was the goldmine for midfielders. France had Michel Platini, Alain Giresse, Jean Tigana, etc. Brazil had Zico, Socrates, Falcao. West Germany had Lothar Matthaus. Netherlands (although they were not in the 86 World Cup) had Ruud Gullit, Frank Rijkaard, etc. Even Demark had the likes of Michael and Brian Laudrup. England had Bryan Robson, Glen Hoddle, John Barnes, etc And for Maradona to stand above them all is a testament to why he is the greatest footballer of all time. This is without bringing in strikers and defenders.
