    Glad it was something simple, wheel bearings & labor can be expensive - especially on a 4X4 (ESPECIALLY down there). I've been working on cars since I was 19, I've seen a LOT through the years! You guys crack me up with your love of surfing, you remind me of some friends of mine (avid surfers) that moved to Hawaii. I don't "do" the ocean anymore since my friend and I had a close (drowning) call at Manhattan Beach in 12-foot waves on Boogie Boards. I like my mountain camping.

    • @TheTravelingTogetherJournal
      @TheTravelingTogetherJournal  Před 4 lety

      Yeah, surfing can be a bit of an addiction if you get hooked. Amie likes the beach but she'd be happy if we spent some more time in the mountains. Snowboarding is really more her thing.
      We have been fortunate with mechanical issues. We chose this truck partially because it is a little simpler to work on than some other vehicles and parts availability is pretty good since it shares a lot of components with the Toyota Hilux, Tacoma, and Prado.

    I own my Auto Repair Shop since 2001. I have been a mechanic for 39 years. It's me, and my son doing the dirty work and my wife does the taxes, paper work, insurance, etc.. I know how y'all felt about mechanics, but i have very good reviews because we treat people with respect and take pictures and videos of the work on their vehicles. They love it. Check out our site at Sam's Certified Auto Repair LLC. Enjoying watching your adventures.

      Sorry Sam. Didn't mean to bash on All mechanics. I have tons of respect for the knowledge and skill. I wish I was better at it.
      The mechanics we encountered while traveling ranged greatly in their skill and knowledge. Most are pretty good at getting the vehicle rolling again, but not always in the best way with regards to long term reliability. They are often doing the best they can without having the "proper" tool or parts and instead of dealing with me and my bad Spanish to explain the problem they would just start smacking stuff with a hammer. 😅

    That breakfast moment was so funny! Wow. I travel to puerto penasco Mexico. My Durango was acting up when I arrive took it in the next day to a place I went before and they found the problem. My anxiety was in high level but after all things said and done it all work out! That was awesome to have had one found a place and two had it fix! Lastly that it didnt cost you an arm and a leg.

      @TheTravelingTogetherJournal  Před 6 lety

      That's true for sure. Especially when traveling on a budget like we are.
      I guess it just stood out as a consistent thing in the budget hotels in Mexico. You could often see that they made a lot of extra investment upfront when building the hotel for decorative pillars, moldings, or tile but I guess the business might not be making enough to keep up on the maintenance.
      Anyway, we're happy to find a place with secure parking that excepts dogs.

    Matt and Amie, is this your latest episode? What is the time frame of your travel adventure? When did you leave California? Are you still traveling? Made it to Panama yet? As I commented before I admire your courage and spirit of adventure to undertake a trip like this. Have there been other mishaps, breakdowns or illness that you haven't covered? What about health and auto insurance? Sorry, too many questions. Thanks!

    • @TheTravelingTogetherJournal
      @TheTravelingTogetherJournal  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Franklin. Thanks for the kind words.
      This is our most recent episode.
      We left California in June 2016. This episode took place in January of 2017. We did make it to Panama in June of 2017 and then drove back to the USA. We explored some of the South West US and have recently settled into Santa Barbara California. The video production has slowed down due to us getting fulltime jobs and trying to move in and get settled in our new situation, but it will continue. My goal is to share all of our adventures with you and get caught up to real time before we set out on our next expedition.
      We have lots more small breakdowns, but thankfully nothing major.
      We had auto insurance in every country except Guatemala. You can buy it online for Mexico and every other country offers it at the border except Guatemala.
      We have health insurance in the USA, but didn't carry any travel insurance. due to past health issues most travel insurance companies turned us down or charged 10x more than the normal rate for us, so we chose not to do any. We used local health facilities in El Salvador and Nicaragua. The quality of the facilities varies, but as an example in Nicaragua Amie got x-rays and an exam on her twisted ankle at a clean hospital and we left with an Ace bandage and some painkillers for around $40. So way cheaper than we are used to paying in the USA even with insurance.

We are both working our tails off to make some income during the busy tourist season in California (where we are now) and haven't been able to dedicate much time to the channel, but that will change soon. My job ends in a couple of weeks and I will be back to production.

  • @defendermodsandtravels

    Huh. I don't rate that mechanic. He didn't use a box spanner to tighten your hub nuts but a cold chisel and hammer. Your hub nuts are now damaged (however they'll work fine). It's just as well he wasn't doing a more critical job because it would have been bodged.
