Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein.

Lyrics:
I guess the dance is over now
So you just curtsey and I'll bow
And ask the band to play us Auld Lang Syne
Then I'll just take what's left of me
Right back to where it used to be
And you'll go sail your magic carpet, far across the sky
I wish I could have made it
More like the movies for you
Some pretty Technicolor way it's never been
I'm sorry when I kissed you
You only heard me whisper
You never got to hear those violins
Did you girl?
No you never got to hear those violins, no
The castles that you built so high
Were just too steep for me to climb
And I guess these dirty streets of mine
Were just too rough for you
I wish I could've helped you see
Just one of your sweet childhood dreams
But though I tried I could not make not one of them come true
And I wish I could have made it
More like the movies for you
Some pretty Technicolor way it's never been
I'm sorry when I kissed you
You only heard me whisper
You never got to hear those violins
Did you girl?
No you never got to hear those violins
Oh I'm sorry when I kissed you
You only heard me whisper
You never got to hear those violins
No you never got to hear those violins

I'm Czech, but I'll try to say something: I've been listening to this band since 1974, I'm 66 today, it's a matter of my heart. Thank you for your attention.
Brilliant !
The rawness of the lyrics to this song will forever hit me in the deepest depths of my heart😔they dont make em like thiz anymore 💯
Rock n roll hall of fame wake up!
I agree
Timeless 70s songs. We knew the decade was good, for sure, But it was much more than that.
Love Dennis even now
I am presently going through a divorce and this song resonates big time! Remarkable!!
Oh I heard the violins alright Dennis ❤️
Es ist das beste an Musik 😘😘 bis heute 👍👍 super 👍 super
I bought 'Sylvia's Mother' when it was a hit, and I was a teenager. But browsing You Tube tonight I realise I'd forgorten just how MANY great sons the band had!
Songs!
Not sons
Sure nuff ... I had the 8 track to start with.. one of the best bands ever ,and that's saying a lot.
My brother bought it and introduced me to it back in the early 70s
Definitely the best songs ever. I’ve been “hooked” on Dr Hook since I heard them as an impressionable 8 year old & I’ve followed them ever since. Nearly 40 years later & I still love them as much as I did back when was a child. Their songs just hit different 👌🏼🎶🎤🎸🎶👌🏼
yeah - i started listening to them 2 hours ago - forgot just how great they are - time has passed us by - but their music hasn't
really appreciate the live recordings on YT
Was für Musik 😘😘😘 zum Verlieben
Dancing with my beautiful darling wife to this beautiful song... Beautiful times alas lost in time❤️😢
Criminal how this band has been overlooked.
It's what's called lightning in a bottle.
Not overlooked remembered fondly with real talent and vocals. On vinyl from my parents in their collection - I am 47 my Dad is 83 and fading out soon. Great memories 👍
Criminally underrated singer.
Absolutely agree. And the band, as a whole, totally underrated. I am from Latin America, and I can’t understand how these guys are not even known down there (at least not as much as others like The Hollies, Simon and Garfunkel, etc). I was very glad to see Vince Gilligan use one of their songs in the movie El Camino, so some of the new generations can be exposed to this amazing band.
Timeless
One of the best bands from out of the 70s.
This was my first dance with my first wife at our wedding but hey didn’t last but still have feeling for her
Hope ray, billy, john the drummer have all found each other and playing, at.heavens gates for all fans arriving me 75 ,next lot to go join these
Great men.
Brings back memories of my mum who is no longer here Rip Heather Tennant one in a Million ❤

🥀Beautiful Sad Love Song! It's really a shame that something you thought you had was nothing at all having to give up almost on yourself that's the saddest part. I love this song and this Man he's to be respected that's the way I feel his words🥀✌🥀☝️
Love Dennis' puppy eyes ...
My dad's favorite band , ❤️ the most beautiful love songs ever. I was fortunate to meet Ray at a county fair in oregon and see him live it was phenomenal they were my first crush especially Ray, growing up not a soul knew who they were cds were impossible to find unless ordered from across seas and took a month or two to get. Anyways I'm just so happy people know and love them as I do and my dad did.
Awesome 👍.. I would have loved to have met Ray 🙂.. He's from just a few counties up from me. Dr Hook was and still is the best.

Wonderful Lyrics and a tune that takes me back to when I had hair and the World at my feet! If only I had known how much I had,how little else I really needed,or how rare True Love and genuine Friendship would be.Dr. Hook were incredible and How cool did that Eye Patch and Cowboy Hat look to my 16 year old self!
