    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Navin (Steve Martin) gets the shock of his life on his birthday when he learns that he will always be white and that he wasn't born into his family.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Carl Reiner directs Steve Martin (who co-wrote the script with Carl Gottlieb) in this gag-laden comedy about an idiotic white man, raised by a poor family of black sharecroppers, who doesn't realize he's not black. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is told the horrible truth when he finds himself instinctively tapping his feet to an easy listening tune on the radio, instead of a low-down blues. His mother (Mabel King) tells him he's white and Navin takes to the road (in a World War II bomber helmet and goggles) to start a new life in St. Louis. A filling station owner, Harry Hartounian (Jackie Mason), give Navin his first break, hiring him to pump gas. One day at the station, Navin has a brainstorm, concocting an invention called "The Opti-grab," a combination handle and nose-brace for eyeglasses. But Navin runs into trouble when a crazed killer (M. Emmet Walsh) picks out his name at random from the telephone book and tries to kill him. Navin escapes to a traveling carnival, where he wrangles a job as the "guess-your-weight" man. At the carnival, he discovers his sexual nature, thanks to stunt rider and S&M enthusiast Patty Bernstein (Catlin Adams). But Navin meets the beautiful Marie (Bernadette Peters) and he quickly falls in love. In the meantime, the "Opti-grab" has taken off and soon Navin is a millionaire.

    In 1998 our local theatre was doing a Steve Martin triple feature on Saturday when Bowfinger came out. The Jerk was first, then Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, then Bowfinger. My friends and I went. I hadn't seen either of the older films. I had a full mouth of Pepsi when he said "you mean I'm going to stay this color". I did a full spit take into the the back of the people's heads in front of me. It was the funniest thing I'd ever heard and at the same time I'm freaking out and apologizing to the couple in front of me. They ended up being really cool and I gave them my popcorn.

      Allowing his hair to turn prematurely grey and *not* dying it was one of the best decisions Martin ever made.

    was Steve Martin BORN white haired? I mean, he was 33 years in 1979... most people don´t get so gray haired like that until their 40s or 50s...

    • @paigecat9104
      @paigecat9104 Před 9 lety +12

      My brother has done the same thing he got his first white hair at 19 now he's 41 and almost completely white headed. His head was half white when he was in his mid 20's had more gray hair than I do at 43 now. Don't know where he got that gene but he did.

    • @rogerpenna
      @rogerpenna Před 9 lety +9

      sorry to hear that pal. But I guess better gray haired than bald? You can dye your hair and it will be more natural than a wig (for someone bald) :)

    • @paigecat9104
      @paigecat9104 Před 9 lety +6

      rogerpenna Amen to that. He did dye his hair for a long time but in his early 30's he quit I think he looks quite distinguished now. It suits him. Some dye colors can come out totally weird he had some interesting choices lol.

      @tf2whackyengineer Před 8 lety +25

      +rogerpenna Steve Martin went silver really early. I think it was somewhere in his 20s. The advantage of that though, is that people got used to it, and he's looked younger for a really long time.

      @@bulaluigi - Right, it's positively "negative", in a strange kind of description? Like self-depreciating humor, Rodney Dangerfield's "No Respect" and making fun of himself, etc. - I make people laugh a lot & most of my jokes are making fun of myself!
