I'm not gonna lie, this is one of the best romantic comedies ever made. It has surprises, unexpected and inspired moments around every corner and with such a short runtime, it made me feel more than the vast majority of movies are capable of doing. The jokes are actually funny. The characters speak like real people and not like actors following a script. To top it off, it's full of cultural (and local) references that put a smile on our faces.
The editing is absolutely brilliant, as is the direction work, including what is done with the camera, how it's shown and how, of course, the actors are conducted. And speaking of actors...what a duo! It's not often that you see this kind of chemistry on screen, where so much is said through expressiveness and where they convince us so well that everything is real, making us want to feel a little bit of it. Vivian Oparah is going to be a star.
Impressive directorial debut by Raine Allen-Miller and I can only say that I'm surprised by myself. I thought this was one of those typical Sundance phenomena - which I don't always get into - but it totally convinced me.

A beautiful film. Perfectly shot, acted and written, with a refreshingly positive depiction of life in London, as well as life in love.
Every character is interesting, yet grounded in realism. The chemistry between Jonsson and Oparah is profound, and it gives their relationship a palpable dynamic which enables them to navigate the ebbs and flows of their journey in a convincing yet compelling way.
Idiosyncrasies are subtly expressed, dialogue is sharp and clever, and the events which unfold elicit every emotion, from hilarity to frustration; from awe to anger.
The cinematography is smart, versatile and purposefully complementary to each scene. The soundtrack, and cameos, are a welcome bonus to what is, in totality, a very well rounded film which left me hoping could go on a little longer. Kudos to Raine Allen-Miller, David Jonsson and Vivian Oparah.
My only qualm was that we had to go to the cinema to watch this at 10.30 in the morning. This was the last and only showing, after just one week of being released?! Yet the uninspired, sensory violation that is Ant Man 3 feels like it has been out for forever, obnoxiously occupying every screen and time slot. It's ironic to think that films that are actually good, and leave you feeling good - even inspired - seem to be so under-appreciated and under-represented in theatres and the wider film industry. Anyways, that's why I'm here to leave my first ever review. To advocate for this film and all it represents!

'Rye Lane (2023)' feels fresh because of its unique energy and flavour, offering a distinct spin on its well-worn genre by way of directorial flourish and writing prowess. It's this that allows the piece to rise above its familiar plotting and uncomfortably conventional finale. The believably sweet central relationship is strong enough to carry the narrative, primarily due to the witty screenplay and sturdy performances, but it's the extra bits of seasoning sprinkled throughout that really mark it as something special. There's a larger world at play here, one built on background detail and vignette-like side stories, and this grounds the core story in a satisfyingly quirky way. The bright cinematography renders the urban setting with genuine love and the visualised stories with Giallo-like vibrancy. The bouncy editing elevates the quick-witted, ever-so-slightly absurdist humour and is a joy to watch throughout. That's true of the entire affair, really: it's a joy to watch. It's always fun, often funny and rarely misses a bit. It's a sweet romantic comedy that does everything it needs to and more.

...story, performances, production design, music, post.
Brixton is a lively, multi-ethnic neighbourhood in South London, and RYE LANE captures in a fresh and delightfully quirky way the travails of two "iconic" (film's catchphrase) characters as they encounter a panoply of off-the-wall characters to finally, in a Woody Allen couples' sort of way, emerge from their self-limiting patterns .
Permeating every frame is the "Brixton Buzz".
RYE LANE does for South London what NOTTING HILL did for North London (and even has a cameo by Colin Firth!).
The film should definitely go wide theatrical. I went to a screening last night - everyone stayed to the end of the Q&A and hung out afterwards - a telling movie metric. Also, there are hilarious background flourishes that will disappear even on a 52-incher.
Bonus: You'll be citing the pub encounter of the two exes for years to come.

This movie is an absolute love letter to South London. If it's right for you, you'll love it.
The two main characters are likeable and sweet - the supporting cast are dynamic and interesting (all characters that you want to see more of but are grateful that you got the chance to meet).
Colourful characters and beautiful cinematography - this movie will have you grinning ear to ear as it takes you on a journey south of the river (Peckham Rye, The Horniman Gardens, Windrush Square - Brixton); an adorable love story that takes place in mostly one day with exaggerated hilarious characters (that we've definitely all met) It's a must watch.

Just finished watching this. A classic story on losing love and finding new romance, but in so many ways elevated.
The visuals in this movie are really amazing. Vibrant colors, great fashion, and beautiful scenery add onto the uniqueness and artistry of this film and really sets it apart from similar themed films.
The chemistry and dialogue between characters feels natural, fun, and inviting. I love the storytelling dynamics and the variious methods used by the director to give us a front row seat to the thoughts and feelings of the characters when they're sharing stories about their past.
The family cookout scene was one of my favorite scenes.
Hope to see more from this cast and crew!

I thought was a really enjoyable move.
This could have been a one hour television programme and still have delivered the same result but that doesn't mean this film was laboured far from it.
Characters were believable and the acting was spot on. Some of the supporting characters did really well in their roles.
It was good to be part of a cinema audience where the laugh out loud moments seemed to be the same for everyone.
No surprises as far as the story goes but it was well executed.
Music not particularly to my taste but fitted the scenes well.
A feel good movie that will make you smile.
    Enjoy.

This is a really good and enjoyable film. Nothing nasty.
We saw it in an advance screening, just some 10 or so numbers watching it.
Boy and girl have both broke up from their partner's and this is the tale of a day in each others company. And possibly more.
I will describe it as a beautiful romance in the making.
We learn about their respective break ups and their ex partners too.
A wonderful walk around Peckham, Brixton and the surrounding areas.
I didn't know that Colin Firth sold kebabs.
Watch out for all the characters apart from the lead actors, they add so much love to the film.
I could watch it again to be honest.

I can't lie I love these kinda movies but this film was mind numbingly boring. The girl was somewhat amusing but the rest of the cast were characters we'd seen in the early 2000s, this felt like anuvahood meeting love actually, it was just bland, forgettable and frankly a bit pointless.
The plot was really non existent, it felt like it didn't know what it wanted to be or what it wanted to say but it was just nowhere near the level of what a cinema release should be. All set over one unrealistic and eventful and highlighting emotional immaturity and a lack of general maturity between people who should be far more than how they acted.
