How Does A SDS Drill Chuck Work? Locking And Unlocking / Releasing Of An SDS Drill Bit

  • Today, we explain how the SDS chuck of a drill work: how simply pushing a SDS drill bit in the chuck can lock it into place, and how simply pulling on the rubber retaining sleeve can release / free it... mystery? No, just a clever little engineered system, that is handy to understand, especially if your SDS bit end up being stuck or if the chuck starts malfunctioning....
    ► TIP
    Vacuum the chuck after drilling (especially into a ceiling), since dust / particles can get into the chuck and interfere with the good working of the locking/releasing mechanism (preventing the metal ball to move freely). Grease has its lubrication advantages but can also get loaded with dirt that could prevent the "release" ball from freely moving, leaving an SDS drill bit permanenlty stuck in teh chuck...

    No one that I have noticed has said that in order to lock the tool into the sds chuck it is necessary to pull on the retaining sleeve while pushing the tool in. Works beautifully then.

    My sds won't release the bits, changed all the parts except the main machined bit of metal that has the grooves/channels for the balls. Anyway after Changing the balls, spring, washers etc it's still not releasing the bits, what's went wrong, I'd really like to repair it as the motor and grear box are still perfect.

    Bonjour, Merci pour la vidéo. Pouvez vous expliquer le système SDS d'une scie sauteuse. je n'arrive pas à comprendre le mécanisme. Merci

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před 2 lety

      Désolé, je n'ai jamais vu le mécanisme du système SDS d'une scie sauteuse. Ce que je sais par contre est que l'ennemi de tout systeme SDS standard est le melange graisse et la poussiere. Si la piece flottante ne circule pas librement, le mechanisme peut rester complement bloque.

    First time using an SDS drill - do you need to apply a lot of downward pressure? I put it in, rotate it but wont go in...

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před rokem

      The drill bit needs to push the locking ball aside which in turn pushes against a spring, so a little bit of downward pressure is needed, but you should not have to jam it into it

  • @adamx7877

    there is only one ball? from one side? or two balls symmetrically?

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před rokem +1

      Only 1 ball on 1 side with this design I have seen. Maybe there are vatiations with 2 balls, haven't bumped into those yet

    I can’t get any to lock in. (I can pull it out wihout should it lock? Am I doing something wrong or could it be faulty? I’m pushing down as I put it in and turn so chisel is facing right way. (Going back to hand chiseling lol)

    • @TheLabOtomy
      @TheLabOtomy  Před rokem +1

      "I can pull it out wihout should it lock?" Yes, when pushed all the way, it should not be possible to remove the drill bit without pushing the rubber retaining sleeve all the way down

      As far as I know SDS is the generic name and as a few variations SDS Plus, SDS Top, SDS Max with SDS Plus the most common for non-pro.
