Christopher Cross ~ Ride Like The Wind 1979 Disco Purrfection Version

- This guy came on like a hurricane in the spring of 1980. Christopher Geppert joined his first band, Flash in 1971. They opened for bands like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin garnering lots of attention but no record action. Chris quit the band in 1973 for a solo career and in 1978 secured a contract with Warner Brothers. Seldom does an unknown artist get the full out all star treatment he got from his label who enlisted Michael McDonald, Don Henley, JD Souther and Nicolette Larson to participate in the project.
However when the album was finished, WB held back the single release until they felt that there was nothing new being released, which ended up being January of 1980. The first single, "Ride Like The Wind" went to #2 for four weeks unable to disconnect Blondie's "Call Me" from the top spot, even with Michael McDonald on background vocals.
The second single, "Sailing" did just that, moving right up to the #1 spot and powering the eponymously titled LP to 5X platinum status and earned him a sweep of the 1981 Grammy Awards taking Best Album, Record, Song of The Year (Sailing) and Best New Artist. It was the first time in record history that an artist took the top four awards ever. - Hudba
This is easily one of my favorite songs of all time.

@@mikey_suzefour you to great comment thanks
Yes, when i was child i loved this song and " a horse with no name" of America.
After losing my job as a steelworker outside Pittsburgh, I moved to Houston, and with one of my best friends, Eugene, we got a job together, and this song came on while we cruised the 610 loop and 'Ride Like The Wind,' became our anthem! Up, Up and away we began, the world was our Pearl we believed, and we never forgot the moment when we first heard this song!!! Just a moment in time!!!
Bet they were good times brother good memories
so....what happened next? What happened to Eugene?
😂Don't go vote democrat now!

Brings back vivid memories from childhood in the early 80’s.
I was on a Greyhound bus traveling from the East coast to San Diego. This song came on my radio, I unplugged the earphones and cranked the volumn up. The passengers quieted down and became lost in their own thoughts. When the song was over, everyone applauded. A GOLDEN MEMORY.
How is it in San Diego?

I drove from Maryland to Oregon in 3 days almost 3,000 miles this song was inspiration!!💯
I'm very intrigued by your CZcams name. I read the verse, and I'm interested to understand your take on it. I'm sure it is a good story.
Say what you want about Americans but no one breaks into spontaneous applause like they do and if anyone on here saw a movie like Die Hard in a US theater you'll know what I mean!
No one can knock this era of music....it really was the best ever ❤️

Very fortunate to have lived through it 🤠

Ahh Better Day$ Late 70s Early 80s !!! ;) to Be Young Agin !! ;)
God bless Christopher Cross, a masterpiece.
The seventies and eighties had some of the best songs ever. Listening to these songs always brings me back to a happier time and place. I will never stop listening to these songs. Told my wife here I can see us now when we turn 80, cruising down the road, top down and the music cranked. Nothing like it in the world.
it was all totally genuine ... good times and good memories to draw upon
Drifting from lane to lane like we owned the world
Having grown up as a teenager in the 80s I have seen the steady decline in mainline music, so good to be able to tune into channels like these and just get lost in memories
I pray you get your chance!
I always say that when I die send me back to the 80's. Best time of my life. Man I miss the 80's.

And Michael McDonald backing up yet another awesome tune.
His voice is unmistakable and legendary in all of the early 80s hits!!
there's a rumor out there that he did the song I'll Wait by Van Halen but they kept it quiet until recently.
@@pashon4percushon I heard that too. Maybe that's the reason that is one of the few Van Halen songs I like....

The magic of this song playing full volume while driving cross country through the cool stillness of the desert in the wee hours feeling unbound and confident that each day would bring more joy than the day before. Ahh youth......

Good times listening to this song. Back in the 80s.
This was probably one of the greatest songs Christopher Cross ever recorded in my opinion people still come back to this song for the nostalgia.
Not just nostalgia, people who weren't even born when this song came out love it, it's just great music.

Songs from the past are still much way better from most of the songs of these days.
More sophisticated. Less Gimmicky
Because today we are nihilistic and overly obsessed with sex and our identities.
@@ExaminerCross I would *wildly* challenge the notion that people weren't obsessed with sex and their own identities in 1979...
@@LayneBenofsky yeah but it's even more intense now. Way more intense. Technology has spread the self obsession to a much wider group of people. Much wider.

Yes, I was surprised by the classification as well!
Very light rock. Yacht rock in my opinion. Saxon did a heavier version that was awesome.

This song is magi for the person who wants more out of life despite the odds. It feels and says it all. A classic in the true sense of the word. Every time! 😎🍿💖
It is the night
My body's weak
I'm on the run
No time to sleep
I've got to ride
Ride like the wind
To be free again
And I've got such a long way to go (such a long way to go)
To make it to the border of Mexico
So I'll ride like the wind
Ride like the wind
I was born the son of a lawless man
Always spoke my mind with a gun in my hand
Lived nine lives
Gunned down ten
Gonna ride like the wind
And I've got such a long way to go (such a long way to go)
To make it to the border of Mexico
So I'll ride like the wind
Ride like the wind
Gonna ride like the wind
Accused and tried and told to hang
I was nowhere in sight when the church bells rang
Never was the kind to do as I was told
Gonna ride like the wind before I get old
It is the night
My body's weak
I'm on the run
No time to sleep
I've got to ride
Ride like the wind
To be free again
And I've got such a long way to go (such a long way to go)
To make it to the border of Mexico
So I'll ride like the wind
Ride like the wind
And I've got a long way to go (such a long way to go)
To make it to the border of Mexico
So I'll ride like the wind
