- We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to CZcams!
Watch Grouplove’s Tiny Desk concert from 2011: www.npr.org/2011/10/11/141135...
Bob Boilen | October 11, 2011
Grouplove knows how to write the kind of songs that keep me awake at night, that sing in my head over and over, that have me pounding the steering wheel to the beat, and that are worth rolling down the car windows and sharing with pedestrians whether they want to hear them or not. These aren't the greatest singers or guitarists we've had play in the NPR Music offices - the early-day warmup for the three songs here seemed about the length of a full concert - that craft will strengthen as they play. Grouplove has been together for less than two years, but its knack for pop songwriting is priceless. You can hear it best on the band's debut album, Never Trust a Happy Song.
Singer Hannah Hooper and songwriter, singer and guitarist Christian Zucconi met the other members of Grouplove - Sean Gadd, Ryan Rabin and Andrew Wessen - far from their homes at an artists' retreat on the Isle of Crete. They vowed to work on music together and recorded an EP in the garage of drummer Rabin's parents; Rabin's dad is Trevor Rabin, guitarist for the prog-rock band Yes in the early '80s and '90s.
When it came time to work on Never Trust a Happy Song, Grouplove moved from the garage to Ryan Rabin's apartment, where he did his first major album production. The band is a collaborative unit, and though songs may start with Christian Zucconi, everyone chips in. Judging from the music, there's a lot of fun and sparks flying in those rehearsal sessions.
Grouplove's name is emblematic of its spirit; it's also emblazoned as a tattoo on many of the band members. So, honestly, how could they ever break up? In the meantime, I look forward to hearing Grouplove grow.

9 years later and tongue tied is still one of my favourite songs of all time!!
hipster overload.
Her shirt’s inside out ICONIC
Probably had a logo on it they couldn't show.
the fedora really ties everything together
this made me lol
It ties the whole room together. It really does
hipster overload.
2011 vibes
The reverse stud, the insight out shirt, all of it?
This entire album got me through my muggy pre-teen years, I’ll always love these songs. I can’t believe they were literally strangers before tongue tied
hipster overload.
@@RobertSlover I hipstered so hard dude
@@nycgirllauren some photographic evidence would be awesome!
@@RobertSlover are you gonna reply with that to all the comments? The video was filmed 9 years ago after all, you freak
0:08 - *Tongue Tied* (3:52)
4:47 - *Itchin' On A Photograph* (9:01)
9:18 - *Colours* (13:32)
The half-hearted applause kills me. Haha that audience doesn't even realize the royalty playing for them. I would be freaking out. Seeing them live was the most energetic performance I've ever seen. They really put their whole soul into every performance.
This is by far one of the worst Tiny Desks, that’s why lol
Can we agree that "Never Trust a Happy Song" didnt and doesn't get the love it deserves? Because it really is a good all Album
He knows how to scream
Some gnarly vibrato too
Out of key.
@@snowstrobe which part?
@@snowstrobe the real question is if it was accidental or intentional.
@@snowstrobe that’s what we love about ut
My mind is telling me tongue ties came out 2 years ago, what do you mean 9...?
Wow they sung their hearts out, this was incredible.
My voice hurts just listening to him
😂
Colours is still one of my favorite songs. It reminds me of a much simpler time.
Saw these guys in London in March, just before lockdown. I have never seen a band with so much energy. They made a 600 capacity venue feel like a stadium. Epic!
So much nostalgia watching this. It’s hard to believe I’ve been listening to this band for almost 10 years now. They were my favorite band in high school and that hasn’t changed as an adult
I like singers with weird voices that completely own them. Zero fear to belt out loud notes. Neutral Milk Hotel comes to mind.
This is the best indie group
Agreed. The last great indie band
Y'all haven't even really looked now have you
Good throwback to a simpler time. Thanks for posting!
Amazing to see how they matured since then. Some things changed, others stayed the same. The music perseveres.
God they played their best songs. So glad I got this notification
needed this rn
They vocal power is incredible from them
Should've done the bojack horseman ending song
I know bojack hadn't come out when this was recorded
BACK TO THE 90S I WAS IN A FAMOUS TV SHOW.....!!!!!
they defined my highschool years. so thankful for their music :,)
I just discovered Grouplove about five years ago, and they quickly became on of my favorite bands. Their second album Spreading Rumors especially is one of the best albums in know. Glad to see them at the Tiny Desk!
2011, wow! If only, I could turn back in time..
Right??!!
I love this band so much. It resonated the teenage years I barely had, and what I went through. Will always have a place on my heart.
I love these folks so much. Everything they do is amazing.
My Spotify time Capsule was playing their songs, so they've been on my mind for the past couple weeks. Great timing this!
ahh good ol nostalgia.
they have such good chemistry
I used to LOVE this band freshmen year of high school. OMG
Me too!
I watch this whenever I’m sad and it makes all the sad go away ❤️
So true . I fell in love with a girl ( someone from my past ), and this was one of our first songs to our 2 yr soundtrack . We didn’t last, 10 yrs later I’m still so in love with her, and I’ll always have Tongue Tied to remind me of one of the great times of my life!!
Honestly this set sounds way ahead of its time
What an absolute throwback
Love it, itchin on a photograph took me back to my teenage years, wonderful, amazing band. It's nice to hear tthem in tiny desk , wonderful thank u so much npr music!
Its truly insane to see how much has changed/grown and now be reminded of the begginings. Woah 🥺
Estoy feliz que exista una versión en vivo de Grouplove, Gracias
I see old people still listening to the music that came out in their early 20’s; they are frozen in that time period. Turns out I was frozen in 2011
Haha I was late 20s in 2011. Still love this band tho
I’m one of those old ppl . In my 50s, lol. I love these guys. Saw a recent interview , (I think) from the last couple of years or less, and they seemed happy healthy. Made me happy just to see the two of them talking, smiling.
I LOVE these early 2010's hipster bands, i was too young at the time they were blowing up to really notice them so now that i'm older i'm REALLY getting into them
They're far from hipster
I have a playlist dedicated to this kind of indie "hipster" music from the early 2010s. Was an amazing year for that kind of music. To bring back a raw kind of flavor to music
Nothin’ wrong with being a “hipster” ! I’ve been called that since the 80s (as a teenager/20 something)
Man, this makes me so happy
There is something so wholesome about this set
This group reminds me, the good times I had with a great friend. We loved this band!
Me, too…me, too.
This makes me so happy in a way I can’t describe
I know, right?
tongue tied will always be a classic
Wow...Goosebumps! I love these songs...and Colours to close was perfect. Thanks for this👌👌👌
I love when even acoustic they sound nice
Hello guys! I love this! 👏👏👏 Amazing! Thank you so much! Happy Sunday to all and good music 🌈🎸🎉🎼

They're so good live. I can't wait to see them at the pink tour!!
Still one of your best voices around. Love it
SO talented!
Still in my favorites playlist
Close my eyes and count to ten, time flies
Saw them play a similar acoustic set around that year in bakersfield. They performed in a movie theater which i found odd, but their music is fantastic.
What a good band
Ah good ol’ daysss
I love them 🥰
This is fvcking gold

I had forgotten how much I liked this band
His voice is so nostalgic for some reason
This year tongue tied will be 10 years. Can't believe it

Why? They're still making music
@@mattlange9332 They're not what they used to be
And I miss this time period!!
@@againcreativeless why u say that?
Wow I somehow forgot about them. I was so in love with Colours 10 years ago 😢
That “ Don’t Wave No Goodbye” is still pure
I know! Especially when you’re starting your relationship far away from each other!
OG GROUP. 🥺♥️
te extraño grouplove
Supa nice
INSIDE OUT TSHIRT
INSIDE OUT TSHIRT
They usually do that because of logo on the front, for recording reasons
I’m very impressed by the bass player, and everything else haha
Love it
also NPR, why would your record a concert and then not post it everywhere
Kind of depressing when you think about it.
Was thinking the same thing, smh npr

I really wish to see Nothing But Thieves in these sessions
We don’t need to context of it being an archive in the title... look to fedora stage left
Sounds like an iPod ad.
