If I understand correctly, electret capsules gradually become less sensitive, losing about 1db every 10 years or so. Does that mean you could compensate by simply increasing the gain on your preamp, thereby making it a non-issue until it gets so bad you can't boost it high enough? Regardless, if you're buying a KSM32 new, I'd say $500 for 20 years of use is a great deal. The mic is like 30 years old now, so I'd love to see someone do a side-by-side with an old and new one. *hint* *hint*
however also true condenser capsules after 40 yers normally need to be reskinned. It costs quite some buck more that a simple electrect capsule. I have reskinned the capsules of my U67s (I owned 2 of them). In both cases: electrect or true condenser capsules, the price of the capsule is just a percentage of the mic price. As far as you don't buy a cheapo mic as the neewer 🤣
Think of it as your everyday Li-Po battery but directly on your mic. It's charged just by plugging into your computer, but just like any rechargable battery, it will degrade, even if you use it or not.

So do electrets degrade even when not in use? Or only when plugged in?

Bruel & Kjaer claims that their electret capsules will hold their charge for 1000 years. Look up the "Microphone Handbook Volume 1"
Which camera does he use?
