    Hey man thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. I was very close of getting this, it seemed like the perfect camera for me, when I came across a lot of people complaining about it's 1080p being very soft and not good quality. Can you testify to that? Or is it better in AVCHD as you mentioned? Does it hold up to grading pretty okay?
    The thing is that I have a sony a6000 used with mostly vintage lenses, which has beautiful 1080p but can overheat, not to mention there is no stabilizations which makes filming with old lenses almost useless. That is why I want this camera mostly, because of the stabilization, but I do not want to step back in terms of quality compared to the sony (and if possible not be forced to use 4k every time.)
    Thanks

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před 3 lety +1

      man, just check the other videos on this channel. The 1080p in AVCHD is so good that it's on par with GH5 in .MOV. Sony a6000 series have horrible rolling shutter and no IBIS, you will hate your life trying to stabilise it in post.

    Hey! :) First of all thanks for the video, it's very helpful! But I had 3 questions :) 1) How did you get access to the FHD 24m 24p mode, I just don't have that, maybe it's because of the firmware version? I have 1.2. 2) Through what "color space" do you display video during editing? I work in DaVinci and use Panasonic V-Gamut in Rec 709, but it seems somehow very contrasting and saturated, but I could not find anything more suitable. 3) Is shooting in 4k with this device generally relevant? For I had a couple of attempts and the video was with some jerks, as if I was shooting at 15fps, well, either I find fault :) I will be glad if you answer! P.S. sorry for my English, I am a native speaker of Russian and I wrote it all through google translator: D

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před 3 lety

      Hi! thank you for your comment. OK so:
      1. You need to put your camera to record in AVCHD mode not MP4 (which is what it's set to straight out of the box)
      2. I can't answer this because I edit in Premier Pro... so I don't se the colour space to anything, I just see whatever premier shows me.
      3. No, I don't think there is an advantage in shooting in 4k. The bit rate is too low for 4k for the most part and so the image breaks. If I were you I would just stick with shooting in 1080p ;)
      Hope this helps :)

    • @justalexhimself

    thanks for this quick review. So a few questions, does the quality differ at all between this and the GH5? If not, this would seem like the better option since it's smaller/lighter form factor..?? what lense would you recommend for product review, ie. anywhere from a few feet, to up close to the object, with the ability to blur the background for tight depth of field? Cheers

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před rokem

      The quality differs due to bit rate. In the GH5 you have some higher bit-rate options and .MOV format which helps if you're filming action / fast movement shots where there is a lot of movement. Also If you want to do some heavy colour grading - the GH5 is better.
      But for "normal" product review vids, the Gx80 is amazing. Get the 20mm f1.4. It's my favourite combo!

    Great help! As a beginner I have a huge question which may sound silly but here I go... I have gx80 too, and I only have 25p/50p options. However I bought this camera because it allows to shoot with 60 fps, so that I could have slow motion effect by lowering it 24fps. But I don't know what to do with that 25p/50p. So how can I make that slow motion with gx80? I am totally confused and disappointed..

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před 4 lety

      So in short: the UK / European versions of this camera shoot in 50 fps max. The US versions have 60p.
      You can indeed hack your GX80 to get those additional 10 frames per second (there are other tutorial on CZcams explaining how to do this) but I wouldn't recommend it. In reality you won't see a difference between 50p and 60p. So just shoot in 50fps and then slow it down in post production to get the slow-mo effect :)

I am a complete newbie and have been trying to get that Cinematic look. After lots of non stop test shoots I've found the CineD profile to show lots of noise in dark areas near dusk and stuck to CineV. Ive set the movie mode to "A" profile so its aperture controlled...I found the manual option confusing. Is that what you use? Also...I find the manual confusing when it explains how the focus works...can the camera auto focus on any scene without have to press the shutter half way day?. Appreciate your advice

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před 3 lety

      Hi Abi, thanks for reaching out.
      In relation to your questions:
      1. No, the video is always in 16 x 9 (1920 x 1080), if you want an even "wider" look, you can change your resolution in the editing software and set your sequence to 1920 x 817, this will make the aspect ratio look even wider by cropping off the top and bottom.
      2. Yes, I agree with you CineD does introduce a lot of noise and colours look a little too washed out... I too only use Natural or Cine V nowadays.
      3. You should try to learn how to shoot in Manual. Even in "A" (aperture priority) the camera will tend to over-expose things and you will lose detail in the highlights.
      4. I will make a video on how to nail focus on Gx80 soon, stay tuned :)

I might try out some of those cheapy ebay $100 chinese 600mm zoom lens for this camera, if you can also give out an explanation in your next video about achieving a zoom comparable to bridge cameras. I normally compare zoom to my 10x50 binoculars, so I get the 35mm equivalent and divide by 50 (ie 500mm being equivalent to 10x binoculars? Why not 4K at 100mbps isn’t this camera Capable of that?

    • @justalexhimself
      @justalexhimself  Před 3 lety

      4k is in mp4 and has a crop factor. I prefer the 1080p in avchd. Nicer codec to work with for colour grading etc.

      Hi, Alex! Thanks for your response. Yes, I'm on Manual mode and adjust all parameters by myself. I also tried auto mode, but picture looks the same, with a lot of grain. After many attempts to understand the reason, I reset to factory settings, but nothing has changed...
