    Overplayed or not, that doesn't take away the greatness of this album. With Queen II it's my favorite Queen album, and not because the critics say it, but because it's that good. Sweet Lady is OK, but also for me the one track to skip, as maybe the last (God Save the Queen). Good Company is a hidden gem, the solo at the end is intended to emulate a dixieland brass band, as an honor to Brian May's father. If you listen to it with that insight it adds to the experience (but you could probably also read that in the big book). Great reviews Larry...

    My Opinion:
    10- 11- 12- I'm In Love With My Car; Sweet Lady and Seaside Rendezvous (12/20) (it's not decided yet).
    9- Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon (13/20).
    8- You're My Best Friend (14/20).
    7- '39 (15/20).
    6- God Save The Queen (15/20).
    5- Death On Two Legs (15/20).
    [4.5- Keep Yourself Alive - Long Lost Retake (16/20).]
    4- Good Company (16/20).
    3- Love Of My Life (ALBUM VERSION, B*TCH!) (18/20).
    2- Bohemian Rhapsody (20/20).
    1- The Prophet's Song (20/20).
    Incredible album! Again, not a single bad song to be found, just some average ones. Maybe not all the songs are so great imo, but the strong songs (all of the 2nd side XD) are some of the best songs I've ever listened; especially Bohemian Rhapsody and The Prophet's Song (which is probably the best song I've ever listened in my life). This album is incredible imo. I think there are some quite better Queen albums, but I still adore it.

    This band was just amazing. What an incredible run of "classic" albums they had in the 70s..... right up to Jazz/ The Game. I love the rest of the albums, but those 70s albums are just crazy good/great.

    Yet another MASTERPIECE! Truly one of the most unique, eclectic, intereseting, versitale yet accesible and easily digestable albums ever. An album we will never hear a like. The epic, thunderous opener of "death on two legs". Some of Freddys greatest piano playing can also be seen in the intro of that song. Second song goes really light on a contrast, and I love that. A song that manages to do more in one minute than most of the songs manage in five minutes. "Love of my life" always sends shivers down my spine. Moving song with some of Freddys best vocals. "Bohemian Rhapsody" is of course great. The vocal section in the middle is some of the most incredible group singing in rock history (also the intro). The ballad section and rock section are also really good on their own, and the balladsection has one of the most beautiful guitar solos ever. I still cant really find how that song is cohesive in almost any way, and that drags it down for me. Also, how can I not mention the epic "prophets song" that is probably my second favourite queen song ever. The rock section is just apocalyptic and the vocal section is here again some of the most incredible in rock history. This song is also actually very much cohesive, going back to parts and using the same keys and melodies in different context. A song that I can on its own call a masterpiece. Also how often can you say, that you love the kazoo solo on a rock song. Well here you can, on "seaside rendezvous". Production is getting better, yet not perfect becouse of the multiple overdubs. Cover is a classic. Album is a classic and for a reason.
    Grade: A+

    I think this is Queen's best album. The only one I'd give an "A". My three favorite songs are the obvious ones: "Bohemian Rhapsody", "You're My Best Friend" and "Love Of My Life". I also enjoy the "music hall" songs. I think they remind me of Paul's "granny" music as well. It says in the liner notes, that the master tape of "Bohemian Rhapsody" was worked on for the "We Will Rock You" edition of Queen's "Greatest Hits" album. I would imagine the 2011 remaster utilizes the same remix, but has a different remastering from that 2004 release.

    Hi Larry. This is for many Queen fans the BEST ALBUM by QUEEN. Its an amazing album with a great variety of musical styles not just rock and roll. Some fans dont like too much because there arent many rocker songs like previous albums.
    I love this album. Its one of my favorites. I will give a 10/10. My favorite songs are BOH RAP, DEATH ON TWO LEGS, YOU ARE MY BEST FRIEND, LOVE OF MY LIFE, 39 and SWEET LADY.

    Good review and very good album. I like this album much more than I once did. When I started work in the late 80s, I decided to buy some classic albums without being familiar with them. I tried to force myself to like it but I couldn't get into it. I get what you said about Sweet Lady. The way Fred sings "Sweet Lady, ..... Sweet Lady....." sounds like when someone gives a demonstration of a song by singing just the title, leaving you to think that they don't know the rest of the lyrics 😂 I really like 39. I just saw part of the Bohemian Rhapsody movie and got a laugh out of Mike Myers’ character making a reference to the Bohemian Rhapsody car scene in Wayne’s World. Btw, A Night at the Opera is one of my favourite movies of all time and the first movie I ever owned on VHS. Actually, it was the first VHS I owned period..... the second was the Compleat Beatles.
    Cheers

    I first bought this album 15 years ago this month (crazy how I remember that). I saw it in a shop in town and so I biked to the shop after school one night to buy it. When I got it home I remember how cool it sounded and the opening song really grabbed me. Great album!

    Thanks Larry- a great timeless time-stamped album. It sounds like that era, but will never grow old. A “classic” in the true sense. (And as far as they could take it; the next two albums A Day at the Races and News of the World had classic songs on them but as albums had become a little bit formulaic.)

    Hi Larry. Just so you know when you get it it, there's an uncensored version of Let Me Live from Made In Heaven with some extra lines they took out at the beginning and end. It's on CZcams and is better than the regular version, but alas is quite rare. Just so you know : )

    Great record and cover. Sweet Lady sounds messy and uncatchy during the funk based refrain, and that's what I like most about it, I think is very cool, the vocals over the main riff are cool too. It's similar to Led Zeppelin's Houses Of The Holy, also from 1975, hard rock with funk influences. 39' is a very good folk song, the should have done a couple more songs like that to me, only a couple of times they used completely unplugged instrumentation I think.

    Wondering how you think the influence flowed between Queen and Sparks. The Mael brothers hint that "This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us" inspired "Bohemian Rhapsody." Thoughts? Thanks Larry.

    • @ZENOBlAmusic
      @ZENOBlAmusic Před 3 lety +2

      Freddie Mercury started writing Bohemian Rhapsody in 1968. He already played parts of the song in college, his friends called it the cowboy song because it began with "Mama, just killed a man." On top of that Freddie Mercury had already written a few epics before Bohemian Rhapsody. The March Of The Black Queen (1974) is far more complex then Bohemian Rhapsody with 11 different sections compared to 5 different sections. Another epic song related to Bohemian Rhapsody is My Fairy King (1973) from Queen's first album. It is similar to people who want to link Queen with 10cc's One Night In Paris. Queen were creating their own epics more similar to Bohemian Rhapsody, before This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us or One Night Night In Paris appeared. In fact with something like One Night In Paris, the open of the song mimics Queen's Brighton Rock opening.

  • @terryjohnson5275
    @terryjohnson5275 Před 3 lety +1

    I have to agree with you that this is possibly their best ever album in terms of variety, songs, ambition and performance. I'm in two minds about the brass and woodwind vocal orchestrations on seasiderendezvous - somedays it annoys me others I think its pretty cool. I dont think thoug gaht tere's a bad track on it - I think Sweet Lady is probably just dwarfed by the sheer excellence going on around it, however if it had been on Sheer Heart Attack we may be thinking of it a bit differently, as its the one song on this that feels more suited to that album and is the link from that to this. Yes Bohemian Rhapsody is so ubiquitous , however I can still listen to it with pleasure, which for a song i've heard a million times aint a bad thing at all and could be a reason why its possibly one of the greatest pieces of popular music ever written.
    So is the album my favourite? No that would be Queen 2 - I'm a prog rock metal head at heart and that one just about does it a tad more than this one for me, though I have to say ts very close with stunners lke The Prophet's Song, Death on 2 legs , Bo Rhap - actually everything else - and John Deacon shows why he's Queen's secret weapon with the poptastically wonderful Youre my Best Friend. On a slightly mellower day though.....
    I just watched the Freddie Mercury Tribute today and thought that theres a bit of a parallel to the way that concert programme ran and Queen's career as in that you have Tony Iommi alongside Brian for the first few numbers with Roger Daltrey and James Hetfield then things calm down after Robert Plant as we get more maintream pop /rock figures like David Bowie , Seal, Annie Lennox , George Michael, Lisa Stansfield, Elton John and then towards the end go back to Tony Iommi and get Axl Rose involved finishing off with Liza Minnelli. Sort of follows the path from this through to Jazz then The Game, Flash Gordon, Hot Space to A Kind of Magic to Innuendo finishing off with Made in Heaven. Such variety filled with utter magnificience. Not unlike A Night at The Opera :)

      @@CSMuffin I think you should get more. I think The Rolling Stones have one of the better rock music catalogs. "The Rolling Stones In Mono" CD set is often on sale. That would be an easy way to get their complete 1960's studio catalog. If only that 2018 "Studio Albums 1971-2016" vinyl collection was released on CD. Those two sets would almost cover it. But, there's some rare B-Sides and rarities from 1971-2016, not on that box set, it's just the studio albums.
