How to Play with your Malinois Puppy - TUG and Fetch

- SO you got a malinois puppy and now you want to figure out how to play with him or her... You may get frustrated at even some of the simple things like getting your puppy to tug or bring back a toy. In this video I will break down some simple steps for you to understand some of the basics. My good friend Yossi and his puppy Siggy have been training with me for a while. This is a great video.. I've been struggling with our new 6 mo Mal/GSD rescue self rewarding too much when exercising her in our large yard, which is filled with distractions. I like this as a way to keep our fetch sessions more structured. Thanks!

I fell in love with the belgian malinois after a friend rescued two of them
I’m repaired to get a trainer and study videos. I know you really don’t like the craigslist puppy’s but there’s some for 300 bucks 5 hours away and very close to where I’m working next week.
What should I look for if I go there
Personally I don't think it matters what command words you use. I would go with the naturally used words in the human language. Ex: Drop it, Bring it, Go get it...get it, Sit, Don't move, Stay there, Come here, No, behind me, get behind, stand next to me, right here, go potty, Larry's coming over, I am going to the store...you can't come....you are staying here, etc. Also, mix in pointing and hand gesture communications with the direactive an communcative words. Dogs can handle about 250 words....or more. I love dogs. My best friends.

Question My four-year-old Malinois mix plays this same game every day and all day once you get her started. She love it, it's just part of the breed they all love it. I was curious as to your objection to the regrip you mentioned in the video being a negative thing. Would you mind explaining why. THANK YOU
Great vid! I'm trying to build toy drive in my GSD and she loves to run away with it after I've let her win. At what point do I use the line to bring her back to me to encourage play?
So funny, I’ve been trying to get my now 9 mo old to do this and he still… no matter what I entice him with, from HVTs (high value treats), tug, running and chasing for object….he just isn’t a returner like my last Malinois. 😂😂 He likes to try to chase flying birds going over the house and loves to watch airplanes…I should have named him Sky Herder!

This may be a dumb question but are the different varieties of malinois very different. There is a breeder of Turvurens, the long hair that I think are beautiful, who lives in my area that I’ve been thinking of getting. I’ve also heard of the black ones who they call grandma dogs, that’s me ( but not a grandma) and wire hair. I’m waiting to retire so I’ll be there to train him or her. I had a dog in my life almost all my life and prefer smart dogs.
When I was first getting into dog training and breed understanding, I actually asked this sort of question too and Robert cleared some things up for me from his videos. But something to keep in mind is that a malinois is a breed, not a variety. You may be referring to herding breeds as a “variety” or category but a malinois is a breed and there is a standard for them which is why Turvurens, GSDs, and Dutch Shepherds are kept separate from the Malinois as a breed. Each breed will have different characteristics and it’s so important to research each one. Genetics are everything and when you say you prefer “smart” dogs, in my opinion any dog can be “smart” if trained properly. Mals are not for everyone by any means. So definitely do lots of research on the specific breeds and not malinois “types” since you’ll probably find more misinformation on the breed than what may be helpful for you.
Tervs are amazing! I had one for 15 1/2 years. Just brush often, brush hair backwards, and they won’t smell, they shed more but are amazing and as smart, loyal and loving as Malinois. Mine was quite a herder too, although from a show line (Bonheur Belgian Tervuren) so maybe different than working line Tervs…I still love her even though she is gone. Belgians are the best breeds I believe. mine was an amazing frisbee and retriever and herder. I don’t remember her being as “bitey” as Malinois pups.
Black are Belgian sheepdogs aka Groenendael. I think the lakenois is the curly haired are a hybrid…not been around more than about 15-years…I think.
Not very different. In my observations, Tervs are a little more laid-back (especially boys,) Groenendael are similar to Tervs but a bit more sensitive, and Lakenois seem to be the stoic member of the Belgian family of herders. If you're a lower-energy human but still love that classic herding dog mentality of wanting to work *for* you, then a Tervuren would be a great choice. I love them!! Do your research, though and talk openly with breeders--the longhaired breeds are developing some different health issues both in US and Europe. Good luck!🙂
@robinnolan8006 Lakenois aren't a hybrid. They were heavily used in the second world war (youtube is so weird right now about deleting comments), and numbers suffered for it so they're less common today. They were later to be accepted by the AKC, but we're starting to see more of them. The curly textured coat is cool! I suspect, better suited to the more southern regions, but not sure about that.

I find that it is hard for owners, in training, to let go of being a mature civilized human and just be goofy, make funny noises and weird actions to keep their dogs interested. Be something your dogs wants to interact with rather than some boring, routine, normal person that is making them do things.

Ziggy has to be a very young dog. He just doesn’t realize yet and he’s having a good time.
That's not a game for this dog because his prey drive is minimal. He finds more interest in the ground odor and visual distractions. The dog is also not into the owner, and that has to be fixed first, where he looks to the owner to drive the fun. The dog would never check in with the owner if he was off-leash.
