Why are knees wrapped in powerlifting and strongmen? Well, the official answer is “healthy and safety”, i.e. wraps stabilise the knee, protect from injury yada yada.
The truth is, they help you lift more. Specifially in the squat in powerlifting or squat-like movements in strongman. They provide mechanical resistance on the negative, storing elastic energy that helps you to rebound out of the bottom position.
Depending on the stiffness (and length, some federations allow longer ones than the 2m IPF standard) of the wraps and how tightly they are wrapped, they can add 10-30kg to the squat. The higher end of that will be for the strongest lifters. And squat (and deadlift) suits also provides very much more rebound assistant out of the bottom position (squat suits: 100-200 lb; deadlift suits: 30-100 lb).
