Gabriel's Message (The angel Gabriel from heaven came) Descant and reharmonization by John Ross

"Gabriel's Message" (The angel Gabriel from heaven came) is based on a Basque traditional carol, "Birjina gaztettobat zegoen" which was first published in 1922, with words by Sabine Baring-Gould (the author of "Onward, Christian soldiers"). Baring-Gould passed the Basque melody on to Edgar Pettman (1866-1943), whose arrangement of this Annunciation carol has ensured its popularity.
