- "Asteroid Chase - The Shuttle Crash", by Hans Zimmer, John Van Tongeren, Harry Gregson-Williams and Trevor Rabin, from the Armageddon (1998) expanded score.

"Oh my God, this is it..."
That crash scene will never not get to me. Awesome music.
X2 );
This particular track was actually composed by Hans Zimmer, not Trevor Rabin, which is why it never made it on the official score release (legal issues). We also hear early elements of what will soon be Zimmer's "Pirates of the Caribbean"...
Oh good I'm not the only one who noticed that the first bit sounded very similar to Pirates of the caribbean
Really ?
uxx7jl ok mais ccuh
Wonder if it is Gregson Williams or Zimmer who did the Asteroid theme though, seems more in line with Gregson Williams as it doesn't have that Zimmer flare to it, though i could be wrong, easily one of the biggest highlights of the score IMO the Asteroid's theme, it's so haunting and chillingly sinister sounding.
OMG, I didnt know this. I hated the fact that this part was never on the album. Thanks for the info, and to whoever uploaded this part; I love it
"We're hit!" The two words you don't want to hear when there is nothing you can do and you know that shuttle is going down.
I still remember being so shocked when Owen Wilson's character was one of the first to die. This was where shit got real & they set the tone. Once they left Earth, no character was safe.
+Nick Bode
If Independence Day has taught us anything, it's never go into a save-the-world situation with an over-confident, overly-patriotic flair. Look what happened to Will's friend "Jimmy" in ID4.
Nick Bode first time I watched this when I saw Owen die,I cried until my parents calmed me down
I was shocked by owen being the first to die also I cried hard when I saw that
I must be dead inside. I didn't cry until Bruce Willis told AJ to care of Gracie for him.
Strong candidate for one of the best movies in the past three decades.
In retrospect, I keep coming back to this sentiment. This is one of the only movies where the interpersonal conflict came out of differing strategies toward the same goal. Every other movie is about person vs person (typically vs. "bad guy"). This stands above them for that reason. Plus its All Go No Quit attitude that nothing else can live up to. This CZcamsr liked it too, despite pretending to hate it : (_4z9yQnIk-o).
2:05 gives me chills to this day. That scene and the music is just haunting
@DanRage47 It's actually taken from the first four notes of Dies Irae, an old Gregorian chant that translates to Day of Wrath.
@@CommanderCoaster fitting
@@doubt3430 yeah, I find it really cool, and it’s used all the time in all kinds of scores.
It fits because it's truly an alien sight to behold. It has very malicious intent and in the film is like sneaking up on an evil dragon.
@@Doctor699 Hmm sneaking up behind an asteroid in two little shuttles. Brings a whole new meaning to "tickling the dragon's tail" huh?
I can see the whole scene flashing in front of my eyes.
“Houston what the hell is that?! Is that the independence?!”
That part forom @3:36 is amazing.I know lot of people don't like this movie becouse it's not so realistic, but it is still one of my favourite movies.Music from the movie is masterpiece,I can just listen it and already have all that scenes in my head.
No doubt this is among greatest soundtracks I've ever heard.
Same here bro, I can the scene so clearly in my head!
nixibreee Couldn’t of said it any better
It really is amazing. It gives a sense of helplessness as the crew of Independence realizes they're in serious trouble, and the pilots tell the crew to try to save themselves. What follows as we see the pilots and Oscar & Noonan meet terrible fates is incredibly moving, even as AJ, Lev Andropov and Bear fight to stay alive.
Armageddon also represents a time when an American audience could accept a Russian character as a hero in an American-centric movie… often a favorite from the movie.
It’s suddenly become a far off dream once more sadly.
Out of all the songs left out of the original soundtrack CD, this one definitely deserved to be put on there. The score for this movie is Oscar worthy
Zimmer is here, with similar sounds from The Rock. It is just infallibile. :)
i know armageddon is dumb for many reasons and shit
but this scene, when they first see the asteroid and their plan starts to collapse with this beautiful peace of music playing in background is fantastic!
One of my favourites of all times id say
Sig. Signoe it maybe dumb but I still love the movie. Mighty ducks is dumb but I still love there movies. Yes this scene is awesome but what makes it is this awesome score and the relationship between AJ and Harry. Harry's sacrifice at the end to let his daughter be happy and finally admitting to AJ he is like a son to him is emotional.
It's dumb mostly for unscientific reasons.
That moment when they finally see the Asteroid..sends chills through you every time, the way the music just changes when its in view, purely epic.
"Houston, you've gotta see this to believe it."
Literally tickling the dragons tail. It'll flick you off and kill you like you're nothing.
Perfect description of awe at something so destructive and threatening, that could wipe out the planet.
3:39 when Truman drops his mug Abe realizes his guys are about to die. So sad.
+PimpyMcHoSmack We're hit.
So dramatic. Loved it
i feel bad for the mug.
Good Luck Freedom.
FullmetalTimo
Oh my god, this is it!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!
*CRASH BREAKS!!!*
Oh my god, this is it……
This is both one of the most epic songs and one of the most heartbreaking in the movie
I really enjoy the transition from the 5 min. 32 sec. mark, the intimate, very emotional part with the violin solo, to the snap-back to reality, violent, turbulent, jarring crash landing at the 6 min. 01 sec. mark. It makes it that much more intense for the audience.
It always breaks my heart watching Oscar struggling to get his helmet on during this scene. He was my favorite character. RIP Space Cowboy.
2:00 - 2:34 is absolutely awesome! It really brings the terror out of that huge asteroid. Gives me goosebumps every time.
3:32 to 5:31 is simply beautiful!
2:05 Best Part of the Song I remember watching the Movie and when they come in and see the Asteroid in their Sight while this Played it felt Eerie but also Awesome too!
It's quite cool. It's taken from the first four notes of Dies Irae, an old Gregorian chant that translates to Day of Wrath. I hear it used all over the place in film. Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Harry Potter are just a few examples.
It's impossible not to cry at this movie ;A;
I know this is a movie. But as a kid I had deep respect and still do after seeing this movie for what real astronauts go threw and sacrifices they make. I’m so glad that they brought NASA back for space exploration.
Armageddon WAAAAY better than Deep Impact for this scene / piece of score alone.
Exactly
i never
More energy and flow than Deep Impact was.
Deep impact was a poor copy
First movie to have ever made me cry. And it wasn't this scene, but when Willis's character is saying goodbye to his daughter near the end.
You mentioned it, and my eyes became watery
Music Piece at 2:05-2:33 is so Epic and Awesome.
It's actually taken from the first four notes of Dies Irae, an old Gregorian chant that translates to Day of Wrath. It's used all over the place: Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Harry Potter, Close Encounters With The Third Kind, are just a few of the examples.
It's actually the asteroid's "theme". Search for Vox "Why this creepy melody is in so many movies" for more Dies Irae examples, even though they missed this movie.
It is super effective at conveying the awesome size of the asteroid.
I just had the feeling I was listening to The Rock soundtrack, then I checked composers of this piece (which is not on the Armageddon OST, and only Trevor Rabin is named as composer there), Gregson-Williams. Yeah, one of the co-composer of The Rock. :). And so Hans Zimmerish. Epic piece.
Where's -- where's the other shuttle? What happened to the other shuttle?
They're off the grid.
'They're off the grid'? What are you, a freaking cyborg!? What does that mean?
Hey, you saw it yourself. Alright? They're gone.
So sad
Bear? BEAAAR!!! ARE YOU ALRIGHT!!!
I loved the whole movie, but this scene is by far the best!
I had no idea Hans Zimmer had anything to do with this soundtrack, but I had the flick on in the background just now and when I heard this piece I immediately flashed on the superb music from Gladiator, also scored by Zimmer. Many of the same elements in this "Armageddon" song echo pieces in that later film.
The mixture of the music from 2:06 and the view of the giant asteroid fit together perfectly.
0:22
All right men, this is what we trained for!
Now just SUCK IT UP!!!
From 4:40-5:30 is one of the saddest melodies in the film. It's during that sequence that the massive piece of rock smashes out the Independence's front windows, killing Col. Davis, Pilot Tucker, Oscar and Noonan, after A.J., Andropov, and Bear escape into the cargo bay with the Armadillo. It's a shame this was left off the original CD release, but it is available on the expanded soundtrack - which I have finally managed to lay hands on.
Really? How did he survive? 2 guys still up top were blasted backwards while still in their seats.
NoPCsHere it was possible for him to survive. Oscar for example only died cause he couldnt manage to get his helmet on.
Its a hopeless moment
"Houston, Independence is a dead stick. They're not gonna make it."
Yes! That's when the shuttles enter a vision of hell. Pretty intense scene.
One of the greatest movies ever.
0:24
-Captain Jack Sparrow! You've come to help us blow up the asteroid?
-Avast ye maties.
The music in this movie is amazing
a heart touching score, makes one imagine the inevitable: watching one's pals fall while you're powerless to save them....
Best song of Armageddon.
Epicness Starts at 3:37
As my squad was getting overwhelmed in ME3, this started playing and when I was the last to go down 3:39 played and it was just epic!
22,500 miles per hour to catch the asteroid, that's just over 10 hours to Earth. Yay Oberth Effect.
Realistically they should have been carrying another external tank for the TLI and Lunar slingshot manoeuvres. I can't even begin to tell you the problems you'd have trying to re enter the atmosphere at that velocity with a brick like the shuttle. But it's just an action film, so I just go with it and enjoy it lol.
12 years old but still AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!
This comment is 12 years old, and still accurate
All right men this is what we trained for,
now just SUCK IT UP!
Sounds a lot similar to The Rock's (1996 Movie) main theme song. Gotta recognize Hans Zimmer's style of music, which is nothing short of epic!
Well Nick Glennie Smith did help out on The Rock.
Same universe
I love how parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack are based on that
Everyone: AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lev: (the cosmonaut) hahahahahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't worry, this is normal!!
Loved that bit, when a Russian laughs you know its intense.
Oscar: This is not normal!
This is way worse!
@@a0402330 ahhh we're gonna die
me too :(
Such loss and hopelessness at that scene in the film.
The most epic shit ever... God I remember this one..
I love the part... where the shuttle firts meets the asteroid.. nice music
Homiluis
Harry: "You see that!"
Rockhound: "Wow!"
DakariKingMykan 👍
Tucker: Houston, you've gotta see this to believe it
Harry: "What is that?! Is that the independence?!"
Homiluis " A Busted Ship? I Had A Front Row Seat Picked Out For The End Of The World! "
3:38- Independence is a dead stick... They're not gonna make it. Very sad scene.
A man's movie, that allows us to maybe shed a tear. Good movie for sure.
Still listening one of the best soundtrax ever :)
2:05
You know doom and destruction on an apocalyptic level isn't far behind when you hear this.
Yeah, especially since it's derived from the first four notes of an old Gregorian chant called Dies Irae, which translates to Day of Wrath.
It's used in film a ton these days. Star Wars, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean are just a few examples
awesome!!
"We are going down, I repeat, We are going down!" "Houston, we have a problem..."
2:03 - The remorseless, indifferent executioner. The all-consumption. The name of your doom.
"Houston, you gotta see this to believe it."
2:04 Such a beautiful part!
pretty epic scene. I watched this on (I think) FX for the first time in years, and all I can think of is this piece of music, thinking....well, shit got real. haha
The brilliant composer is the best soundtrack for the film Armageddon.
OMG D: sounds like Pirates of the Carribean!
La scène de crash ohh mon Dieu j'ai pleuré toutes les larmes de lin corps
3:35 *Cup drops* Mayday Mayday!!!
😢🥺😭
" Houson Independence is a dead stick, Thier not Gona Make It"
I don't get why Asteroid Chase; especially at 2:04 is not in the Sountrack on iTunes! This bit is always chilling for an asteroid movie.
2:00 Eye of the storm....
Gives me chills every time.
Quelle émotion
5:31
absolutely ballriping part
Did anyone else notice the Pirates of the Caribbean theme in the first 30 seconds of this song??? :D
Wrong, you heard part of this theme in Pirates of the Caribbean c(:
Just kidding,
both pieces are composed by Hans Zimmer.
You can notice a lot of similar parts in many of his works. For example "The Battle" theme from Gladiator have some parts similar to theme from Pirates of the Caribbean :)
nixibreee I think it might be a trademark of his that he throws in somewhere in his music so people know who did the soundtrack.
HisNHers Reactions Trevor Rabin never did POTC.
nixibreee Hans Zimmer didn't do Armageddon though, it was Trevor Rabin.
Sumeragi Kishi No, he's not.
"HOUSTON WE ARE GOING DOWN, HOUSTON WE ARE GOING DOWN!"
Awesome soundtrack. One of the rares compositions i've liked which is not a Hans Zimmer
Independence :( Sooo sad when it crashes down and the pilot is like that: "My god, its over..." :(
me encanta
the best song¡¡¡¡
Vi esta película en el cine cuando era pequeño y justo la escena del independencia junto con esta música es mi trauma cinematográfico desde los 90s
Best part of this if from 3:30 to 6:00
Totally agree. I can't help but suspect that part is Harry Gregson-Williams' doing. It sounds suspiciously similar to his stuff in the Rock as well as Metal Gear Solid 2.
"Good luck, Freedom."
"Oh my God, this is it..."
the best soundtrack EVER MADE begin at 3:39 (ok all the track...)
3:32 We’re Hit!
@Konyigery Nope. This particular track was composed by Hans Zimmer, as Trevor Rabin was busy with other tracks, which is why this track is not on OST album.
For all mankind
Hans Zimmer ftw on this track ♡♡♡♡
+Captain Phasma No it's just Trevor and Harry, wrong credit.... some think all great score must be Hans, it's beacuse many composers were Hans Zimmer's students. In the 90's.
@dirtysouthernchico Same. so breathtaking when Independence hits with music
♥♥
6:00 makes me frickin' shivver!
i just like how when they first see the asteroid the theme is dark
3:38
"My God, this is it."
I love the part that starts at 2:00
0:40 sounds like part of Trains from The Peacemaker OST also by Hans Zimmer.
i fucking love this song and this movie
And what does scientific accuracy have to do with how good a movie is? Also it's 'shown' not 'showed'.
At 2:02 to 2:33.. the way the soundtrack played and the choir vocally sang, makes me want to say,
"Asteroids are so.. beautiful.. and unimaginablely powerful. And that's scary." 😱
They're out there.. in space waiting to unintentionally attack our Earth beyond Mother Nature's and Fate's control.. but are controlled and decided.. by Astronomical Phenomenons and Anomalous, if that type of occurrence was to make the jump.
Let's all hope that this worst case scenario will never happen.. in our future.
If the 2012 phenomenon on our planet won't kill us, then these big rocks revolving around our planet within their belt, which is their home, will.
Probably.
Actually it sounds more like "The Rock" from 1996 (means 2 years earlier than Armageddon) which was composed by both, Harry Gregson-Williams and Hans Zimmer.
I know what you mean. The sad dramatic shower shootout scene from The Rock.
STAND FAST!!
00:42 kicks in the beast mood every fuckin' time
3:37 is the best part
Muchas gracias por este aporte, hacia mucho lo buscaba. un abrazo y éxitos. ( Thank you very much for this contribution toward much sought. a hug and successes.)
In reference to this having part of the music playing during the moon gravity 'slingshot' I should point out that it's the reason this was named 'asteroid chase' a chase isn't catching up tosomething it precedes it. So yes, the gravitational manouver is much like chasing asteroids in an almost unknown way hey DID expect tail debris.) Then it was pure asteroid evasion and attempts to land. Betwwen that and the dead stick landing is when the saddest bits come in and the Independence suffers most damage & deaths, ending in the dead stick landing/crash.
Forgive the typos.
At the beginning, there's some Pirates of the Caribbean in there. Jack Sparrow was on one of the shuttles, confirmed.
Oh my gosh this is it.............
MMNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
@tytheevildeadguy Ironicly, after reading your comment about that moment of the music, I actually got a bit of goosebump around my face.
agree
hey can anyone tell me if there are any songs or soundtracks that are mainly like the parts at 2:02 to about 2:30? i dont think there is a soundtrack for the asteriod theme which is Amazing.
