    Everything Everywhere All at Once starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu, Jamie Lee Curtis, James Hong, and Jenny Slate. This outrageous comedy takes everything and turns it upside down to pull at every heartstring. Today I cried, laughed, and commented on the film, reviewing it in the only way I know how while sobbing.

    He didn't want to divorce her, he was desperately trying to have the conversation that would save their relationship (he explains this in the earlier scenes in the van, where she's first fighting Deidre). She wouldn't give him the time of day whenever he tried to address their problems, so the divorce documents were a last resort to force the issue.
    He never wanted to give up on her, but he was very aware that she was giving up on him.

      OMG - and I just realized it's echoed in how things go with Joy at the end. Waymond asks to separate because he wants her to come to him, and Joy does the same. She wanted her mother to meet her where she was, but she asked Evelyn to let her go. Evelyn briefly signs the divorce papers and lets Joy go, and then she herself reaches out to Waymond and Joy and refuses to let go, which is exactly what both of them really wanted.

    • @jacobd1984
      @jacobd1984 Před rokem +121

      I don’t know if I would say Wanda was completely villainized. The movie certainly didn’t give due weight to her grief given that she’s a recurring character and not a one-off antagonist, but the writers did at least acknowledge it. I suppose Jobu Tupaki is more sympathetic, but I think that that comes down to framing, given that her plan is to destroy the entire multiverse, and we know she killed multiple people.

    • @Eggsther
      @Eggsther Před rokem +71

      I also have iffy feelings about Wanda basically enslaving a whole town and making them not be able to control their bodies, "save them" and then frame as "they wouldnt know what you did for them" as if they wouldn't get in that situation if it wasnt for what she did in the first place. Im all for her character but that one aspect really put me off and it reminds me of how colonizers gets sympathy for "saving" the people

    • @ma.2089
      @ma.2089 Před rokem +14

      The thing is, Wanda being a villain is consistent with her evil behavior at the end of Wandavision. It’s sad cuz I really liked most of what Wandavision did, but then they decided to make her villainous towards the end and then kept it going into MoM.
      At least it’s consistent w/ her characterization but we lost a character we had watched since Age of Ultron. And it’s sad. If they wanted an evil Wanda they could’ve used a different universe Wanda. We saw her lose everything, struggle to get back up, and then became a monster. The character arc was just not satisfying.

    • @ma.2089
      @ma.2089 Před rokem +10

      @@Eggsther the thing is, it could be argued that it was a complete accident and she learned not to do that. But then she went and did it again to Agatha. Whose only crime was…telling Wanda she couldn’t handle her powers and trying to take them away from her. Considering what Wanda did and what she went on to do, Agatha was right. Not only that, but by brainwashing Agatha she proved she didn’t learn anything from the town enslavement and therefore is culpable for what she’s done. Before she wasn’t in the right state of mind which is why she did what she did. But then she did it while perfectly reasonable, and willing and purposeful villain.

    My absolute favorite scene in this movie is the part where Joy and Evelyn hug after their conversation. Because in every other universe, there's this climax, where the music is at it's peak, and there's this collision in every other universe that looks really big and important like that watermelons literally exploding. Then they cut back to the actual hug and it's silent. it's simple. I was already crying but when they cut back to the hug I burst out into uncontrollable sobs that had my sister andfather thinking I was crazy. it's a hug. It's a hug. IT'S JUST A HUG AND IT'S SHOWN AS SOMETHING SO SIMPLE IN THE SCENE BUT IN EVERYTHING OTHER UNIVERSE IT'S LIKE A COSMIC EVENT. IT JUST SHOWS THAT EVEN THE SIMPLEST ACTION CAN MEAN SO MUCH THAT IT LITERALLY ROCKS YOUR ENTIRE WORLD OFF IT'S AXIS.
    I'm literally crying rn I love this movie so much

    Also that scene where she gets shot and says it's organic, made it clear to me that she more so wanted to fuck with her mom and not kill her lol. Think about it, if you're parents actually care about you and they see you get killed or hurt it'll destroy them mentally, and she played that up to hurt her mom. 11:50 Waymond's lines (which are cut from the video here, sadly) here are a reference to "Absolutely (Story of a Girl)" by Nine Days. They were added on a rewrite as a joke, but the lines were so good they were never replaced.
    Then the team making the movie reached out to the band's lead singer who made three covers of the song for the movie- one played in the car when another Waymond is talking to Evelyn about the divorce papers, one during the Raccacoonie scene- called "Absolutely (Story of a Chef)"- and the last in a later scene where another Evelyn works at a BDSM club- called "Absolutely (Story of a Dom)".
    On another note, one of my favorite parts of this movie are actually the sausage fingers- they're so ridiculous and it's got a point. Evelyn can't relate to Joy on one level because she can't understand that Joy loves a woman. In another scene Evelyn is asked to "proclaim her love" for Deirdre, and "really believe it". Both of these concepts are 'ridiculous' to Evelyn, and so it's a great moment when, during the climax of the movie, it's revealed in the ridiculous sausage finger universe she's also in love with a woman and that woman is Deirdre.

I was sobbing and when I looked at my dad during the credits it made me cry even harder because he didn’t get it which stung so much and I don’t think he ever will :/ ( was also on my period so everything was making me cry at the time which didn’t help loll ) EDIT : thank you all for the sweet comments 🥺

    I watched this movie four times in theaters and SOBBED for like 40 minutes straight each time-this movie is so sentimental and personal, honestly it changed my life and I’m not even joking 😭💘 I also love the conversation of negative nihilism vs positive nihilism-the idea that “nothing matters” doesn’t have to be necessarily negative; that concept can also be incredibly freeing bc if nothing matters then you truly are free to decide what it is that matters to you-in a sense everything that is important to you…matters :’)

    In an age of social media and "influencers", I think it's such a powerful message to say that nothing else matters except the single life that we are given, and what we make of it/what we choose to do. It's a wonderful and refreshing depiction of the conflicting schools of thought between the nihilism and optimism. Perhaps individualism in a communal way of shared experience.

I was watching it with a friend of mine, and they weren’t affected by the mother daughter dynamic as much as they were affected by the father’s speech about kindness. So we had such… different takeaways from the movie, and it was still such a life changing experience for both of us, and… I dunno i just think it’s pretty damn cool

    the film goes STRAIGHT for the throat of humanity, omfg. like the set-up is "every person across the world and throughout history has experienced this psychological anguish of existential dread. in case you forgot, this is what it feels like! do you feel that crushing sensation in your chest yet?"
    followed by "here are some different philosophies that sprung up through history in this search for meaning, some of which are EXTREMELY depressing, and which have probably occurred to you too, possibly in a way that has drained you of a will to do anything, or even the will to live!"
    then finally "and here is a sweet unassuming husband/dad who embodies a philosophy that will actually provide you with meaningful purpose, and which lifts some of the weight of existence from your shoulders! enjoy~~! have a nice rest of your dayyy~"

    this movie both lifts me up and destroys me. all the things i could’ve done or been gets to me sometimes. evelyn’s arc of self-acceptance and using all of the talents and dreams she doesn’t utilize day to day makes me feel good. it’s still in us somewhere, and we can use it to better ourselves and help others around us. it’s hard to remember when you’re stuck inside a bagel. this woke me up. i’ll always love this movie. i cry at waymod’s laundry and taxes line and evelyn’s monologue at the end every time i watch this.

  • @almostfacsination
    @almostfacsination Před rokem +4

    beginning where you’re just crying was me but for half the movie straight up. it was my birthday and i was having a bad time, really emotionally vulnerable, but my mum spent the day with me even though i was struggling so hard and the last thing we were going to do was see this movie and it just broke me. like the movie was already iconic but it got to waymond talking about how things feel off and asking evelyn if she felt it too, and it just resonated with how i had been feeling for a few years now and how afraid i’ve been that things will always feel this way. and then the movie kicked it up a notch again with waymond talking about his internalised guilt later in the film like i started crying and didn’t stop until long after the movie had ended and i got home. and that’s not even touching on the mother/daughter relationship, queer themes, the “doomsday device” that by the middle of the film you learn is just a metaphor for depression and you realise joy only created it to use on herself. and the depression metaphor gets darker. and god the editing had such flair, i loved the jumpcuts with joy and how they were used to visualise the alternate realities. this entire movie perfectly rides the line of ridiculous and sincere, it’s one of a kind.

    There's this quote about storytelling, I just remember the jist of it but "it's easier telling a story about people hurting eachother than it is telling a story about what brings people together." I think it applies a lot to film, its cliches etc. but I see this film as the prime example of showing it, and it's masterful. It tells both how we devalue those we love (and how natural it is in life, just how easy it is in our everyday lives), but most importantly what binds us together afterwards. How the breaking point is when we see how things truly are and what of it matters, how we can live through, or despite, the circumstances we're faced with. It's just absolutely masterful to see that theme woven in with the nihilism it just assumes (nothing TRULY does matter)... I just really love this film.

    I'm here because it recently swept Oscars, and i think it deserved every rewards and recognition it got. One of the best modern masterpiece i've seen in years. Besides an interesting theme done well (multiverse), over-the-top hilarious action sequences, great editing and heartwarming drama, it's philosophically thought-provoking too.
    It tells the opposing approach to existentialism that questions our life's purpose and cripples most of us. Pessimistic nihilism vs. optimistic absurdism. The yinyang of everything bagel (black outside, white inside) vs google eyes (white outside, black inside). Empty void inside vs pure core inside. "Nothing matters so might as well die along with everything else" vs "Nothing matters so might as well enjoy life". Waymond taught Evelyn and us the latter.
