Friend, if this is your first exposure to Pentatonix, you have a decade of jaw-dropping music to get caught up on. Pentatonix is to acapella music as Stevie Ray Vaughan is to blues guitar solos. They. Are. That. Good. Artists that are individually this good, and can mesh as well as they do - that's something that only comes along every generation or two. If you are into incredible vocal music, there is simply NO better rabbit hole to go down than Pentatonix.

For all of us with Anxiety, we can identify with this
song. The 'shadow selves' walking behind them starts out going forward and they
reverse and start going backwards. This is superbly shot and their emotion in
their faces and voices just show how we feel when we are in an anxiety attack.
10 seconds in when Matt hits us with his first low note I got chills, and when
Mitch said 'See right through me', I choke on a sob. I have seen this video

There is 5 members in this group, hence the "penta" in the name.
    - Scott is a baritone but has like a 4 octave range so he can cover pretty much any harmonic space they need. He covers the bass when the formal bass in the group is singing the melody.
    - Matt, formal bass, but he also has a baritone range. He has only been a permanent member of the group since 2018. In, 2017 their original bass Avi left on good terms for personal reasons and helped them chose Matt to replace him.
    - Kirstin, only female in the group, she's a mezzo soprano, but as you could tell, has a nice lower range.
    - Mitch is a counter tenor and can be mistaken for a girl's voice, but in this song he also sang in his lower range. In the harmonies, there he took the higher harmony when Kirstin was singing the melody, but I think the other "female" voice you heard in some of the harmonies was actually:
-Kevin, he usually does the beatboxing and rhythm, but he has a nice tenor voice and his falsetto is very high. He doesn't get to sing very often because he's the foundation with the beats, but in these 5 part harmony songs, he's right there where they need him. He's also a world class cello player and can beatbox while playing the cello (celloboxing).
Overall, they are en extremely talented group of people!!! They been together since 2011, so there is a lot of content and I can't wait to see you discover it!! You really can't go wrong with anything they do!!

    • @sopranosd

lurker1107 Mitch is not a countertenor. He’s a lyric tenor with a powerful extension. Countertenors are baritones who sing in their falsetto. Mezzosoprano is a midrange soprano fact. By definition it means a female singer with a strong middle and low voice.

As I'm sure you've already heard, there are a total of 5 members of Pentatonix. There has been one member change since they started in 2011, and that was their bass, Avi ( you'll see him in earlier videos ). He left the group with no hard feelings ( though a good bit of sadness from everyone ) and even helped Pentatonix find their new wonderful bass Matt.
The members of Pentatonix are: Scott Hoying, he's the blond gentleman with the scruff. Mitch Grassi, he's the baby-faced member of the group with the high voice of an angel ( and the one you mistook for the second female voice ). Kirsten Maldonado, the young lady in the group. Matt Sallee, the newest member of Pentatonix and their bass. And, last but by NO means least, Kevin Olusola, who sings high tenor but mainly focuses on beatboxing and playing the cello in the songs they do which require it.
All of the members of PTX, as we call them for short, are powerhouse singers in their own right. But, when you put them together, they are...well, they just are. I can't think of a way to describe the feeling they give when they hit us with that wall of sound, all five voices blended together, harmonies so tight.
Fun reaction. I'll look forward to more.

Two females? Nope, you've been "Mitched!" Mitch and Kirstin have very equivalent ranges and that is one of the secrets to PTX and their seamless harmonies. Often you really can't tell if Mitch or Kirstin is singing a particular part in the background. (It's obvious when they're singing lead, of course.). "Penta" is a word root for the number 5, which is one of the reasons they chose the name as they have 5 members. The "pentatonic scale" is used for modern pop music, which is the other reference in their name. They have around 18 million subscribers and over a billion views on CZcams. Their most viewed song, a cover of Hallelujah, has over 500 million views on its own. It's no wonder they have won three Grammy awards so far.

Great reaction! Welcome to the Pentatonix rabbit hole! A point of interest if you found their harmonies spectacular, add to that the fact that due to quarantine, all 5 recorded their own parts alone in their homes, unable to hear each other, they were combined in studio. To sing in such perfect harmony as they always do, proves their incredible talent. To do those perfect harmonies apart from each other is simply unworldly!
You will now get many PTX fans (called Pentaholics) viewing your channel and making suggestions. Truly pick ANYTHING from their extensive catalog of covers and originals and you will never be disappointed.
As mentioned in other comments, prior to 2017 their bass singer was Avi Kaplan who left amicably for personal/family reasons. This bass, Matt Sallee, was recommended by Avi as his replacement. That has been the only change in the group. If you watch their earlier videos, you will find it hard to recognize Mitch (and sometimes Kirsten) as they often change their look.

There are 5 of them... The high notes are from Kirstin (girl) and Mitch (counter-tenor.. he is the second "female" you hear and he sings higher notes than Kirstin in general)

Hallelujah, Sound of Silence, Daft Punk (Grammy winner 🏆), Mary Did You Know, and there are so many other great ones. Their evolution of: music, Michael Jackson, Beyonce, etc. are awesome too. Thanks!!

Looking forward to more PTX reactions. There are so many songs to choose from beginning in 2011 ish and you can’t go wrong with any of them. Only 5 people in the group, hence the name "Pentatonix". The beatboxer, Kevin also has a fairly high tenor voice, which he uses when he's not busy with the beatboxing. But Mitch has a very high voice.

I'm sure people will catch you up on the members and all, so I'll just leave my suggestions: you should react to the videos from their "evolution" series, they are all recorded live!
Also, the grammy winner Daft Punk medley is a must! As are their covers of Hallelujah and Bohemian Rhapsody. I also like the Sound of Silence a lot.
They're all absurdly talented and I'm always thrilled to see people blown away by their stuff. Enjoy the ride!

Dude, you're killing me with all of the pauses. It really breaks up the flow of the piece.
FYI, there are 5 members, and the second "high" voice is Mitch Grassi, who is basically a counter tenor. If you wanna really hear his high range, you could check out their live performance of "Aha!" in Singapore.

Five people. Only five people can make a sound like this. Why would anyone need an instrument? Only one, Kirstie, is female. Mitch is a high tenor and can match a lot of Kirstie's notes pretty spot on.
You want something that sounds like the clouds just parted? Listen to them do "Hallelujah". Half a BILLION y-tube hits can't be all wrong.

  • @Russ_Keith
    @Russ_Keith Před 3 lety

I see controversy in the comments about the pausing in the reaction. Anyone who's seen my name in the comments to other reactors will know I have more than 2 pence (cents) to add. Relax, this time I'll limit myself to just the 2.
I think that, as with most things, it's all about balance and of course the need to avoid blocking. We're here to see the reaction and Pentaholics will know the video forwards, backwards and up and down but others hoping to gain an introduction to a group they haven't heard before (and believe it or not there are still some) will not and too many pauses will interrupt the flow and dynamics of the performance and the interplay between the voices which are the core of Pentatonix's uniqueness, although running the video back a few seconds after the pause might minimise that. As a result they may not be inspired to go and watch the original and be transformed and swell the ranks. Like I said, balance.
