Had the pleasure of meeting your uncle after his great show at Newcastle City Hall in the UK - must have been in the early 1980's. The support acts were Raymond Froggatt and Rose Marie. The sound quality was top notch. His new wife was on piano. Lovely memories :)
Hoyt was my cousin. Being a doofus, it was only about 10 years before his death that I really discovered his music. His Dad, John Thomas Axton was a coach and athletic director in Oklahoma for many years, and his Mom, Mae Boren Axton, was a gifted songwriter and the author of a book of biographies of noted "country" stars of her era.
Hoyt belongs right up there with the best of any generation. He had it all - songwriters talent, voice talent and musicianship. He was one of a kind, and we're lucky to have had him. RIP
The first date my husband took me on, was to a Hoyt Axton concert in March of 1977 in Eugene, Oregon. It was great fun. That date began a romance, which became a marriage of over 36 years now. Thank you and RIP Hoyt.
@@garnbob My husband and I coming up on year 47 in August, we are still crazy in love and going to great concerts. In fact, we just bought tickets to see Bonnie Raitt on October 8, 2024. I can not wait to see Bonnie rock the stage again since it has been almost 2 years since we last saw her.
Jumping for joy that they recorded this vid. My good music never dies. Having had purchased all the records I could never get to the place he played. Even liked his acting too.
my belated husband and his belated father had all his music.toke me a little while to understand most of the music but like it mush .brings my good memories..
I had the privileged of meeting and interviewing Hoyt Axton in Germany...was working at the Canadian Forces Radio Network...this was 1979 and found him to be a kind, warm gentle man. I consider myself fortunate to have shared time with him
back when i was young i had very few records ...albums by Simon & Garfuncle, Hoyt Axton, 3 dog night, Linda Ronstadt...... Evangelina my fav.....I sang it everywhere
Always loved Hoyt Axtons' music. First song I learned and did on stage was "Green Back Dollar". His "Southbound" album was amazing and I almost wore it out when it was released. Loved "The Blind Fiddler" and "Evangelina". Thanks so much for sharing! I too am playing it over and over and over and ..... :)
Fond memories listening to my dad's live Hoyt Axton recorb back in the early 80's. My favorite song was Dela and the Dealer but I loved the whole album. The pot smoking tour bus story cracked me up even though I didn't really understand it at the time.
My favourite version of this song was when Hoyt payed at one of the Bread and Roses festivals in the late '70s and Joan Baez and Mimi Farina (and maybe Joni Mitchell, can't remember for sure) sang harmony.
I saw Hoyt at the Palamino Club in Northridge California many many years ago - must have been 1972 or 1973. What a treat that was. I will never forget his incredible presence..........
Hoyt is one of those musicians who always deserved superlatives and must have had a loyal following without ever being "in." I think that's why I liked him so much. Geez, his music sounds better today than ever.
Always enjoyed listening to Hoyt Axton, but I especially enjoyed this performance because of his backup singers, they have such angelic voices. Miss ya Hoyt! God Bless, Jeff :-)
This film was shot at The Wembley International Festival of Country Music, London, England ... I'm not sure which year this was ... I met Hoyt Axton when my band & I toured Canada in 1984 ... he was a true giant in every way.
Well, here's view #12,501 (as of then) and kudos for for the man and his music. I find myself still being moved by Hoyt Axton's talent through the years.....
hi this was of a country show that was at wembley arena, london this was in the early 80's back in the 80's there was a program on tv called "sing country" he sing 3 songs on it i think them being this, della and the dealer, and wild bull rider. regards dave
what has it been 17 years since his death? in my opinion he's very much underrated & doesn't get a whole lot of credit for his contributions to music in general he wrote alot of songs that alot of people covered but very few if anyone knows about that he was behind alot of big hit songs some he sang & some others sang it'd be a shame if he's not in some hall of fame somewhere
Have you checked out The Pusher? Someone did a nice job with putting it together. Best thing I ever saw was just Hoyt, a straight-back chair for his foot, and a guitar resting on his knee. Anyone see him at the Troub back in the late 60, early 70s? A.M.
Yes! The night Neil Young jumped on stage and played with him! Seems as if Neil was dating Hoyt's keyboard player (NOT Bambi- his future wife) I was there and went to Neil's Hotel with Hoyt and others- he was working on Lion in the Winter song and we all threw our 2 cents in, including Neil. I think it was the Fall of 1973.🥰
I wish someone could find where Hoyt performs this tune on an episode of McCloud (under his character's name on the show) ... I just saw it today on T.V.
Thanks for posting this magnificent performance of a truly great song. Am I right in thinking that he sings this at a slightly slower tempo than his studio version? After I've watched this video the only thing I ever want to do is....watch it again...
Linda also backed up Neil Young prior to The Eagles backing her up on their way up. James Taylor and Nicolette Larson also sang a lot of back up on their paths. I think this is Nicollette who also did some back up with all of the above on Harvest. They were all in cool collective.
Great Song - sure do miss Hoyt. By the way the red-head in the middle is Katy Moffat. She has videos posted on youtube. Check out Walking on the Moon. Rossovich
the woman in green is NOT linda ronstadt. i had the privilege of seeing hoyt axton probably 30 times from about 1978 to about 1985, and everywhere from the palomino in north hollywood to the golden bear to a very nice venue in orange county whose name i can't recall right now. the band you see here was the band that played with him during most of the appearances i saw. i don't remember the backup singer's names except for the short redhead in the middle who is katy moffat--a great talent, too.
Because I heard or paid attention more to Jonathan Edwards' first, that's my preference.I'll tell you this right now,it's very rare that I'm going to prefer a version over Hoyt Axton's!
@bates1972 this is not linda ronstadt ... I am pretty sure that it is nicollette larson who shortly after this recorded "It's gonna take a lot of love" and had a pretty big hit with it...also, I wish someone would post "the devil" and some of his other great songs from Fearless...the whole LP had great song after song - such a story teller
you're right i'm sure that is linda ronstadt yes that does seem to be the norm with some vids on here not enough views although my other hoyt axton song as more views. take care dave
I sure do miss my Uncle Hoyt. He surrounded himself with amazing musicians, his band my family growing up. Together they were magical,

You would be surprised how many fans there are of Hoyt still around there’s a bunch of us.
Thank you, Heather. It's grear that family is here listening, too. God bless you.
We all miss him.
Hoyt is an American treasure. RIP big guy.
Hoyt was an underrated, but highly talented, singer songwriter. Gone far too soon, and sorely missed.
What a wonderful voice and talented singer, writer and actor. He died way too young.

That’s the best!!!!
Great story!

This man, what a voice, he hits those low notes, and I just melt....one of my favorite songs of his too thanks for sharing !!!

What talent. We will always love you Hoyt. See ya "round the bend'.
What a talented man, very unique, can listen to him all day. RIP Hoyt
His duet with Linda Ronstadt, Lion in the Winter, is awesome. Well, anything with Linda was awesome.
Also Hoyt sang 'When the Morning Comes with Linda. Well worth a listen.
One of the most beautiful songs I know....the lyrics relate to my own quest to win a Vietnamese beauty, against complicated odds...

Myself and some close friends play lots of great songs by Mr.Axton..always been a favorite!
Colter’s cover brought me here🥹 As a Latina with roots in Mexico, I approve this message🫶🏼
A true Legend. This song is my all time fave.
Really nice... makes me realize why I love this music. Thanks for this piece.
I have loved Hoyt for 40 years. No one like him. I have an old album. Snow blind friend.
Wishnwe.could have. Meet what fun.we could have had. Still.had.lots of fun.listening to him and his.music. Thank you hoyt

Yes, true!
I miss him too. Fantastic talent.
Thank you, Mae.

I have "rediscovered" Hoyt Axton, after a 30 year hiatus.. Warms the heart. Wifey and I used to sing together.. LoVe is....

Dam him for being before my time!
Love You Tube for performances like this!
Hoyt Axton is actually singing about a Mexican woman named Evangelina.
This film was shot at The Wembley International Festival of Country Music, London, England ... I'm not sure which year this was ... I met Hoyt Axton when my band & I toured Canada in 1984 ... he was a true giant in every way.
Hoyt Axton was born on this date in 1938. {Mar. 25th}
Sadly, Mr. Axton passed away on October 26th, 1999...
May he R.I.P.
Miss your uncle's music, he was my favorite singer.
thats whats wrong with america today we dont have Hoyt anymore well we can still hold him in our hearts. THANKS HOYT.
Well, here's view #12,501 (as of then) and kudos for for the man and his music. I find myself still being moved by Hoyt Axton's talent through the years.....
This is one of my favorite songs by Mr. Axton. I used to have several of his albums. In vinyl.
That is not Linda R.

I agree he is on of the greatest I'm just 36
Love this song and I went to Rocky Point (south of phoenix) to find my Evangelina once. ahhhhhhh, but what a song.
GREAT VOICE!
also liked the movie gremlins with him in it-also GREAT actor.
Good song very talented !
Your Uncle Hoyt had a really amazing voice.
What a nice thing to say. Well said 1974Qball. I am sure Hoyt smiled on you!
Hi there i'm glad you liked this vid he as got a great voice a big shame we lost him so young really.

why people don't comment surprises me a little!

Besides the live recordings, there must be four or five different recorded arrangements of this song! I hear a different one every time I look for it!
zulu0219 he did this on a tv show he was in,I think it was Columbo

Love this. Who are the backing singers?
great song.. another one is endless road. I've heard it in an episode of Bonanza, but I don't found any video or mp3 on internet.
anyone can help me?

Where can i get this full concert?

I do believe that's Josh Leo who went on to play with Jimmy Buffett for years.
@bates1972 His mom was Mae Axton and wrote "Heart Break Hotel" made famous by Elvis Prsley
@cliftongal51 Great talented entertainer I agree.
@axleroy Yes, it was Heartbreak Hotel written by Hoyt, his mom & one of his friends Tommy something!
Am fairly certain that the lady in the green shirt with white fringe is Jana Lee.
The lady in the green shirt with white fringe IS Linda Ronstadt. Check out their duet of "Lion in Winter" and you will see the similarity.
saabman93aero man you must be high! That's not even remotely close to linda, that's Nicollet larson
Loved Hoyt Axton and loved going to Puerto Penasco when I was a kid! Bates, do you have info on what show this was from? Thanks for the post!!!
Beautiful song, great voice!
Just realised that this is the guy that played the inventing daddy in Gremlins =)
@bates1972 Mae Axton. She wrote "Heartbreak Hotel".
hi there i believe hoyt's mum was a singer and song writer and write a song for elvis but i can't remember the name of it.
regards
dave
@axleroy Mae Axton is a co-writer on none other than "Heartbreak Hotel"
Jonathan Edward's version is more mellow and Hoyt's gutsier. A toss up for me, I love both versions.
Hoyt's mum wrote Heartbreak Hotel
Who is on lead guitar ?
@bates1972 His mother wrote Heartbreak Hotel.
Hoyt is sure getting puffy .
he passed away!!
Vera K White I guess that took care of the puffiness.
jdsol1938 Damnit I laughed.
@bates1972 this is not linda ronstadt ... That is not Linda Rondstadt, and Hoyt's mom was a very successful song writer most notably writing Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis.
@bates1972 Mae B. (Mavis) Axton- Heartbreak Hotel
hoyt, sold out for a greenback dalla!
Sorry guys, but that's not Linda with him. I saw him with these ladies many times over the years and they were all wonderful. As was Hoyt!
@bates1972
Lisa Mae Axton...Heartbreak Hotel
Anthony Russell
you're right i'm sure that is linda ronstadt yes that does seem to be the norm with some vids on here not enough views although my other hoyt axton song as more views.
take care
