I work for a furniture company that sells different foam products. The cheap stuff (which I definitely believe this was) only can take 40 lbs of pressure max before being completely flat and useless. The expensive stuff can do about 100lbs which is custom made too. Having only one layer of foam blocks basically equates to just jumping straight onto the floor.
I feel that the blame for the foam pit goes to both parties. TwitchCon should have taken more precautions with the pit by placing those large mattresses at the bottom and probably making it deeper with more things to slowly break the people’s fall. However, there is the fault of the people who jumped themselves, which is that you should never jump into anything that you are unsure of how deep or safe it is. Another prime example of a questionable decision that is similar to jumping in the pit is like jumping into a pond or small lake, you have no idea how shallow it could be and it could injure or even kill you. In the end, there is blame on the designers AND the people who jumped as well. Cheers, and stay safe everyone!
