How Russian Propaganda Changed Music Forever (The Uni-Vibe Sound)

- The Univibe is one of the most iconic guitar effects of all time, used by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, and Robin Trower, but what is the Univibe sound? Its not quite a phaser, not quite a chorus, but the unique pulsing tones that it produces have given it a place of its own in the guitar world.

Cheers for having me for Rhett! Great episode 👌🏻
You're the tops Chris! Love your channel and your playing.
Thought I’d stumbled into a Friday fretworks! 😂 great video both of you! You’re my favourite guitarist at the moment 🙌
Excellent intro with Chris playing.
U still play the blackstar artist 30 much? The Artist 15 is my main squeeze atm
Rhett- can’t Forget Robin Trower. Slow: bridge of sighs. Fast: day of the Eagle.
Thanks for getting me involved with this one Rhett!
Love your stuff too Pete!!!
Thanks again Pete! You’re the man!
Thanks Lucas!
That was amazing
Excellent video buddy! Nice to see/hear Chris M. 'pinch-hitting" for you 😀
gotta say... Being a LEFT-HANDED guitar player myself and actually playing LEFT-HANDED. I'm a little pissed that R.J. TOOK A KILLER LOOKING LEFT-HANDED STRAT AND TURNED IT INTO A RIGHT-HANDED GUITAR...
AS IF THERE AREN'T ENOUGH RIGHT HANDED GUITARS IN THE WORLD YOU GOTTA TAKE ONE OF THE FEW MADE FOR US LEFTIES AND MAKE IT RIGHT-HANDED !!!! WTF DUDE!?! 🤣🤪🤙
I gotta say R.J. That is one sick ass Strat Sir!
Being left handed but playing right, I am on the fence.
@@troyshaw9356 blame Hendrix
How the hell did I know it was Chris Buck from his boots?
Even his boots bend into a slide
Signature fender boots
The hybrid picking told me and the boots confirmed it.
Haha legendary
The way he holds his pick!
Yeah man, thanks for having me! Been learning a lot from your channel. I always thought Univibe was the failed attempt to reproduce the Leslie sound. Now I know it wasn’t. Cheers! 🙌🏼
Joined your channel your playing sounds great!
I feel really sorry for Rhett's new assistant to be the only player not to be credited on screen. His playing was as valuable to the video as Bucks,
AJ's etc
Agree, he deserves an onscreen credit, too. His playing is good!
~13:00 is my favorite clip out of the whole video. You’re right - he needs some credit! 🙂
Steve Vai had his arm in a nap sack as well, must be fashionable for guitarists. What a nice surprise to see all those guys help you out.
Pretty tough stories you can make up, just tell people it's a guitar related injury and act cool 😂
Idk, stunting on a mountain bike is pretty cool tbh
Yeaaa. Would like to see Rhett playing some left-hand only stuff.
So in my gigging cover band, I play bass and keyboards simultaneously on about half our tunes; I play my six-string Ibanez SR606E with left-hand hammer-ons only, with heavy compression (and a James Jamerson sponge at the bridge to dampen ringing), while playing keyboards with my right hand. Being limited to one hand, with hammer-ons and pull-offs being your only real tools to choose from, really changes your choice of vocabulary. I also liberally use an octave pedal as well.
Perhaps my left-hand-only technique on bass would be an idea worth exploring.
Peep "Green Label Orchestra" on YT for examples if you're interested.
This video is beautiful, seeing all the guitarist coming in to help Rhett warms my heart and makes the video super interesting
I was just thinking the same thing!
The Univibe js “Instantly recognizable “….just like Chris Bucks guitar playing. Awesome choices for guest players
I got a Fulltone Deja Vibe MDV 3 a couple months ago. I had been looking around for a more affordable, yet still faithful Univibe style pedal, when I happened across a Robin Trower interview where I saw he had a MDV 3 on his board. When he turned it on to demo how he does the Bridge of Sighs sound, I knew that was the Univibe for me. If it's good enough for a guy like Robin Trower, then it's more than good enough for me. When I did get it, I was blown away even further and have just been having a blast making my own sounds with it. Definitely my recommended Univibe pedal to go with, rather than spending butt tons of dollars on the real deal.
You do realize you are executing Plan B right now, don’t you? 😂
Baaaaaaahhhh!!
I was thinking the exact same thing...
You weren't alone with those thoughts.
looking at RJ's guitar is hurting my brain...
Upside down Stratocaster
Beautiful guitar.
@@TotalEvo7 Does that mean a lefty but restrung with the strings in the opposite order?
@@therealandrew185 Correct, and the strap buttons are still in the same place. The lower horn does have the additional strap button added to it afterwards
When you're really, really in a Hendrix kind of mood.
AWESOME video Rhett! Thanks to you & then Pete Thorn for showcasing our Gypsy Vibe pedal too 🟥⬜️
For me, the uni-vibe sound is Robin Trower
Bridge of Sighs was Epic. I love Robin Trower. Also the Vibe on: "I can't wait much longer" - live version, or his Wah-pedal work on tracks like: Alethea - live. Fantastic Guitar Player ( humble - too ).
Chris on with a univibe? Instant click!
My Uni-Vibe adjective has always been “chewy.”
Yes! Perfect. it smooths out the fuzz/overdrive in a constantly variable way. A sound that always keeps your interest.
Lol, that's an accurate description!
I love Uni Vibe , Robin Trower was a master at this sound : Winterland concert 1975 .
"with a little help from his friends..." - Great Video! Really liked the guest spots, since your not able to play right now. Hope your healing well bro, take care!
Man Chris Marks is a great player. Glad to see he has a great videographer to document it. 🤘🏼❤️
Rhett, I've been following you for a few months. Just want to say that I appreciate your dedication to "there is no plan B." I'm sure that it kinda sucks not being able to play right now, but you are doing a great job of staying focused on the plan and staying on the path. Keep making great videos. Keep inspiring. Keep teaching. Keep using your gift.
D'you know what I love about this video?
(Despite the amazing history lesson)
It really showcases how much of a media producer you have become. Drawing on all your CZcams buddies to help take your place playing the guitar actually shows how good of a storyteller you are. How well edited and constructed these videos are.
Totally bossing it man! Props!!
Machine gun from the Band of Gypsies album is the best use of the effect in my opinion
So nice to see all these YT greats supporting you while you’re down. It’s really inspiring. Wishing you a quick and full recovery, Rhett. 🙏
Super pumped that you're still making great content under the circumstances that you're in Rhett! And it just goes to show you how classy the guitar community can be with them boys lending their talents to help a brotha out! Awesome stuff gentlemen!! No plan B
Dude, these collab videos are just KILLER!! I hope you heal up quickly.
Hendrix may have used Univibe occasionally but Trower thought "that'll do."
Great video... univibe has always been one of my all time favorite guitar tones.... Grew up on Hendrix ..... that sound is so mesmerizing..... along with the early days of flanging.... when they used two tape machines to replicate that sound. I have had several different univibe pedals....all the great sounds out in this world that guitar players produce... at the end of the day its all in the hands. Again thank you...... and a side note Rhett keep on keeping on and heal well !
The first thing that went through my head was Trower's Bridge of Sighs... I always wondered what that effect was... thanks Rhett. You brought together all my fave YT guitar masters... RJ, Buck, Thorn, etc... great vid.
Great video, Rhett! I really liked the collaboration and learning more about one of my favorite effects. I did find the light next to your head very distracting - maybe just me :)
Dude, Rhett! This is the vid I suggested in the last Instagram live stream.
So awesome - Love the collaborations, keep it up!
Love how all your peers are stepping up to help. And it shows the power of this community. Kudos to all.
And really informative to get behind the Leslie myth. Great video Rhett!
Aside from the great topic, I dig this format. You being the host with others playing the gear in question and talking about it and you providing context. I like it, please more of that. I hope your arm heals nicely, but I really like what you came up with out of necessity.
Love the Uni-vibe, love the guests.
Best wishes for a quick recovery, Rhett!
Must say, also loved the JHS slide roast last week- a lot😂
Hey Rhett, great video. I have Strymon Mobius but for some reason I have not used the vibe featuring much. I can’t wait for work to end so I can get into it. Continued good health!
So cool how many of my favorite CZcams guitar folks are pitching in while Rhett is convalescing. Well done everyone!
Just come from Friday Fretworks, great to get more bang for the Buck this Friday 😁
Great video, I love the Univibe sound! Years ago when I bought my first guitar pedal I got a Small Stone phaser because I thought that's what I was hearing. Figured it out and I've been through a few Univibes and settled on the Sir Henry, I love it
Great playing from great players. I’m a major Chris Buck fan, but I gotta give props to Pete Thorn for that jazzy, new age sounding open string stuff. Love it. Great video, Rhett.
Even with his guitar upside down RJ absolutely kills it with his playing! Glad to see your CZcams buddies helping you out!
Awesome video, super informative and (as always) really well done. Great idea, Rhett, you should do more of these while you recover, feel better soon!
Love your vids Rhett! Been watching since the Tyler Bryant episode. Tone geek here, so your content has been very helpful. Keep it going brother!
Great video Brett, loved Pete thorns piece, a gypsyvibe? That was awesome
This has some of the best playing I have ever heard from some of the most famous guitarists I follow on CZcams. Pete Thorn's little ditty? I actually stopped what I was doing just to listen. I was transported.
Hey thanks Jefferson!
I recently started REALLY listening to Hendrix and I’m surprised how I missed the Uni-Vibe sound for so long. It’s such an important part of his sound and I can’t get enough of it.
Check it out on house burning down if you haven't yet!
I LOVE the community coming around to help Rhett out! Great post! I remember trying to find the device that created THIS sound as a young guitar player. I thought it was a Phaser, and I could never find the “right” one?
It’s still hard to get a “great” Vibe?
Hi Rhett, this format emphasises the documentary aspect quite nicely. Surely an unintended benefit of your accident. Gif Will Spoon.
In the department of pedal history, you've just out-Joshed Josh. Whoa.
Awesome to see many of your friends rallying round to keep your show going👍🇬🇧🎸😀
Loved this . Missed your playing Rhett , but you got some great players here to pitch in ... great example of the guitar community working together.
Univibe is an effect that plays you, as much as you play it.This is a fun episode!! :). Nice. Definitely an effect you play to and it's a feedback loop - back into one's playing - inspiration.
Man, the tone from 12:40 has to be my favorite. Simply amazing.
This is a great video! I’ve put my JHS Unicorn after my Big Sky and it does some AMAZING things to the pad sound for P&W music. I’m not interested in sounding like everyone else, Vibe is a great way to do that.
I liked the video and I liked seeing you work around your injury. Keep up the good work!
As always, great video!! I always learn something new!! Thanks Rhett
Man that RJ Ronquillo strat looks dope!!! Great episode and top playing by the guests
that paisley generally is not my style, but I just saw that strat in a different video by RJ last night, and I really like it... now would I buy one?? prolly not haha
I love the univibe sound. I remember the day I was messing around with an old Line 6 M4 and hit the Univibe option, I had a name for a sound I didn't realise I'd been chasing for a long time.
Excellent video @RhettShull wish you the best to get better soon man!
Enjoyed this video immensely as well as all the guests and their playing. Well done Rhett!
Thanks for the vid! First of all, i hope your bones heal well and you get back on the field soon!! Love vibe tones! The vibe is incredibly niche and at the same time extremely finicky to nail, which is a bad combo for mass production. There's lots of vibes that sound good, but very few that come close to the originals. I have one of the few god vibes (made in Japan) available and that one sounds so much closer to the Hendrix records than anything else (unfortunately, as i would love to sell it and buy a cheaper clone - i have even refused a 3k offer for it). I have even built a very authentic clone myself that comes close and that is state of the art in regard to what the DIY community on this has uncovered, but it is still not as good as the obscure Japanese vibe , presumably due to the NOS bulb used in it. To me this is the holy grail effect, as apart from a few obscurities, there are pretty much no substitutes to the originals, which again do vary a lot and at some point the originals die if old age (bulb or LDRs).
Bought my first univibe pedal a week ago. I have about 50 pedals and just recently realized this was a key part of guitar tone I’d been missing. Now I can’t imagine it not being on my board. Also, get well soon Rhett! Impressed see that your lack of playing may have increased the quality of your content. Don’t stop being you once you can play again (I literally watch every video start to finish) but keep this type of content coming!
Accept that @jhspedals guy. Man, he sucks at slide!
Thanks for covering a bit of the history! I almost felt like I was watching an episode of 5 Watt World 😉 great vid as usual
Thanks for the history lesson. Very interesting! Hendrix’s Woodstock performance was certainly life changing, but Trower’s Bridge of Sighs” was the song opened up my inner space.
I loved the documentary sort of style this video has. Also, your assistant is quite a player, wow!!
Aye I asked for this on your Instagram live!
Mahalo Rhett!! Love my Jam Pedals uni-vibe!
Rhett, this might be one of my favorite episodes you have created!! And I realized we're the same age haha! Rock on brother!! Keep doing what you do!
This was one of you bests Rhett. Great job. Thanks!
Thank you Chris for helping Rhett.
Great video! Wonderful playing!
This is rad Rhett! Might need to get a hold of a univibe now.
My wallet is crying!
Hey Rhett ... Your arm sling reminds me of Duane Allman's guitar strap with that ring on it!
I thought how did I click on Chris Bucks video? Great one Rhett.
Focused, logical and informative.
I do not play, but I have always wondered what was behind the music. Topics like this fill in for me, one piece at a time, the puzzle of tone, technique, device and all that goes into making actual a talent I never possessed. Thank you for opening your window on a world of marvels.
Awesome video! Very cool info and history. Thank you!
P.S. I love how you included clips from other CZcamsrs videos, very helpful!
Really touched to see other people that I follow pitching in to support for a while. Well done guys.
A must have! I have the Dunlop Roto Vibe and the Fulltone Deja Vibe both are awesome, put them at the front of your chain (yes...front) and it's hard to go wrong!
these are my favorite kind of videos you do. excellent as always!
Great video Rhett ... well done!
Great episode! One of my favorite effects ever! You can’t be into Hendrix and not use that effect!
My favourite CZcams creator, doing a video on my favourite effect, with my other favourite CZcams creators. Hell yes!
I'm late to the Univibe party, but I've been using it quite a bit at my church gig lately. My bandmates agree it sounds terrific.
Great video despite the bum wing. Heal up bro!
Rhett, Thanks for making videos while you are out of commission. Your videos are insanely high quality. You are a short film maker and a great player.
Nice one, thank you for that episode!
Great video Rhett as always. You should do the Red Special/Brian May sound, that's a different one.
Yes, yes and yes yet again.
Hi Rhett. Great video. Hope you are playing again soon. Love the channel.
Interesting to hear about the radio waves bouncing off the ionosphere.
When I was a child in England in the 1960s, I used to listen to Radio Luxembourg - but you could only hear it in the evenings, when the bouncing phenomenom was working.
And it would fade in and out, with phasing sounds.
Great video! Very informative!
Two of the best Univibe effects are Robert Keeley's MONTEREY, and Drybell's VIBE MACHINE. Stellar. Get you some.
Hendrix used Uni-Vibe on nearly everything after Woodstock.
Check the Maui shows for some beautiful sounds from Uni-Vibe.
Hendrix was so trashed at Maui that everything was redubbed in a studio. It was just that bad.
@@1pcfred I'll have to check that out
@@jefflitchfield4950 another problem they had there was wind. I think I'm listening to a piece from there now. Playing /home/h1/Music/Rock/JimiHendrix/MCA BOX/4/The Jimi Hendrix Experience 11. Hey Baby _In From The Storm (Live) - The Jimi Hendrix Experience Vol. 4 .mp3. I let my PC shuffle through my music collection to keep my amplifier awake.
@@1pcfred No.. Actually Jimi and Billy Came Out Ok.. It Was Mitch's Drums That Were Unusable and He Re-recorded Them (And He Did One Hell of a Job if I May Say So.. Not an Easy Task in The Least Trust Me)
Some great uses aside from the more standard fare, that I hadn’t thought of before. Going to try the after reverb thing as soon as I can play again (broken hand).
very nice rhett...very well done..
Great Video!!! Can you recommend any good clones?
Used to have the real thing with the speed pedal. Noisy as hell, but when you split the amps and run the vibe on an amp 10 feet behind the front one, the simulated stereo was pretty mind bending.
Wow this was so informative and insightful man keep this type of videos coming.
"You are only coming thru in waves." - Roger Waters, Comfortably Numb
I always imagine the univibe sound as like your guitar tone is thick and sweet and gloopy like pouring out of a syrup bottle in a pulsating manner. Basically it's maple syrup if it were guitar tone. Absolutely love it.
Bravo to the community of strummers! Really heart warming to see everyone come out to support you. It’s a testament to the great shit we’re all so in love with.
The Fulltone CS-MDV mkii has a lamp and photo cells. Probably the best of the univibe pedals called the Deja Vibe. Sweet vintage sounds!
Fantastic video, man! You need a TV show! Hope your arm gets well soon!!
I've got a Fulltone deja vibe mdv3 its definitely got lots of texture and color I highly recommend ☆bro many blessings for all you do for the guitar community great video
