    Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today on our 2021 Ford Escape, we're gonna be showing you how to install the CURT T-connector vehicle wiring harness. But before we do that, why don't have to check it out and make sure that this is gonna be right for you. So people do use these Escapes to do a little bit of everything. We know you see quite a few of them out on the road, pulling trailers. And if you're pulling a trailer, we want the lights to work.
    That way, people know what's going on and we'll be safe and legal. And that's where a wiring kit like this is gonna come into play. Now, the cool thing about this setup is the fact that it can be stored inside of the vehicle. That way, when you're not using it, it's not outside of the elements and everything else. Whenever you're ready to use it, super easy, not inconvenient at all.
    All you're gonna have to do is open up your hatch, lift up your floor covering here. And this is where the wiring can be stored. So out of the way and everything else. All we're gonna have to do is drape it over the rear threshold here. And we got plenty of length that we can work with.
    I'll probably choke it up here a little bit. It really don't need that much. And as long as we're on the weather stripping, we're good to go. Just try not to get hung up on the latch. You don't wanna do that.
    You'll close the hatch on it. And this may seem kinda odd, closing the wiring in the hatch like this, but it's not gonna hurt the wiring. It's not gonna hurt your vehicle. It's designed to work like this. So just wanted to mention that. We're gonna have a really easy way to hook up to your trailer and get those lighting signals. Now, this is gonna be a 4-way flat type connector. So really common type of connector. It's gonna work with most small to medium size trailers, and what's even getting popular nowadays is lights on accessories like cargo carriers, for example. And a lot of those lights on those accessories are gonna share the same type of connector plug. So if you have something like that, chances are pretty good. This will power those up as well. So at the end of the day, if you want your trailer lights to work, it's a kit I'd definitely recommend. They're well-made and will get the job done and should work for a long time. Now, as far as the installation goes, I'm not gonna lie, it's not hard, it's just time consuming. You're routing a lot of wires and everything else. So definitely plan to spend at least a couple hours getting this done. I will say probably the most time-consuming part is routing the power wire from the back here to the front. But as long as you follow along, I'll show you how I did that, and hopefully, it'll speed things up a little bit for you. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and hook this up together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our Escape. And what we need to do is get inside, that way, we can take a couple panels apart and access our factory connectors. So first thing you wanna do is grab your floor covering, slide this out and set it off to the side. Now we need to remove this threshold piece here. So there's gonna be two hooks on each side of it. I already pulled that one off. So that's what it'll look like once it's removed. How to get it removed is pretty simple. You're gonna take a flat-head screwdriver and kinda pry underneath the head of that cap. That will expose a T25 Torx bit fastener. So we can get that removed. And after kinda looking at this a little bit more, I think we might need to actually get these foam trays out of the way first. There's some plastic fasteners in there. Looks like that one's loose already. This one here, we'll undo. With these, you can just take a screwdriver and loosen and kinda put some pressure up on it while you're doing that. So I'll get this one out of the way and repeat the same thing to get the other foam tray out. Looks like this one over here is just gonna have one fastener, so it's even easier. There's a couple more fasteners holding our threshold on, and they're gonna be on this flat side and we're gonna have one on each end. So there's what that fastener looks like. We're gonna use a seven millimeter socket to get it removed. Now we're able to grab up on our threshold and more or less, this just pops right off. So that's out of the way, we'll set it to the side. Now we need to do is open up our panels here on the side. That way, we can get to our tail light connector. And pretty straightforward, if you start down here, take a trim tool or even a screwdriver, really. We're gonna pry up on it, work around the edge and its just g

    Pro/con with the SE model, the battery is installed where the spare tire would be located. So this install is easy to connect to the battery. As you may or may not know, the spare tire does not come with the vehicle. To solve this, visit your local salvage yard and get one of the THIN spare tire from a model that is not an SE (Hybrid) and their is enough room to add a spare tire without making contact with the battery. In most cases the spare tire is new because most people do not use the spare tire before they demolish/total their vehicle.
    Sorry people, but that air pump and tire patch will not work on large gashes. ;D

    For the 12 V power supply, can’t you just use the 12 V power outlet in the back?

      Can you? Sure. Should you? Not so much. Attaching the power feed to the battery as the instructions indicate isolates the trailer wiring from the vehicle's wiring, protecting the vehicle from any short circuits that might occur in the trailer wiring. Using the the port in the cargo area could damage the vehicle wiring, not to mention it would nullify the warranty of the trailer wiring harness.

    Why not use the 12 volt supplied to the “cigarette lighter” outlet in the trunk?

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  Před 2 lety

      The 12V outlet in the trunk is not designed to support the load that the wiring harness needs to send to the trailer lights. You run the risk in blowing the factory fuse for the outlet each time you hook up your trailer. This is why connecting directly to the battery is recommended.

    why didn't you run the wire on the in side the car across the door trim and when threw the firewall plug came out next to the battery and used less wire

      You can always wire it up thataway, but it's more complicated. Not every one out there is mechanically inclined, so the manufacturers make the installations as simple as possible.
