I spent many an hour with my Dad in the SAW ROOM filing and sharpening those band saws. Replacing the bits and shanks that got bent because of rocks and nails. One of his Sawyers had 2 bobcats that came to work with him and ran the yards while he worked they loved playing fetch.I would climb the sawdust piles and watch that old burner glow red and throw red burning embers in to the sky at night. I was amazed at the log runners who walked the ponds pushing those logs around jumping back and forth and running the full length of some to get to a specific log.. some lost their lives falling between the logs and drowning or being crushed. A hard life back then but for a kid aworld of wonder

When a tree smacks the earth after it is felled and then its skidded to the landing the cones in the crown break off and get dispersed over the forest floor. Then as the equipment makes passes over the ground the soil gets cultivated and the cones break apart exposing the seed. In 3-5 years after logging has taken place it is normal to see thousands of new seedlings appear over the landscape. Especially in skid trails. A lot of the heaviest timbered ground we see today were clear-cut back in the 60s and 70s. Clear-cuts on average produce some of the heaviest regeneration as compared to other timber management prescriptions.

When I was a kid, my father and neighbors would hire a guy that had a big long saw that was powered by a tractor and they would cut all the wood they needed for construction. Most of the heavy work was done by men. Nothing was wasted.
