Always go through pockets! When my mother passed, years ago, we found almost $20,000 that she had put into the pockets of pants, jackets, etc. Every time I watch you empty a closet, I just want to rummage through pockets for you! 😆
Yes...I was going to suggest that also because about 30 years ago I went to a local thrift store and bought a used blazer...when I got it home I found a 20 dollar bill in a pocket!!! U never know!
Just recently, an employee in a Goodwill in Oklahoma USA found $42,000 all in $100 bills in between some donated sweaters. She went on NBC news. They found the owner and it was returned. Andrea received a $1000 reward for her honesty.
I once found a £1000 in tens between the pages of a donated book in my local charity shop. I was a volunteer and I alerted the manager. We couldn’t track the donor because she was not a regular and she never came back again. I think it went in as money donations otherwise the manager kept it 😂
Did you check the names on those silk scarves? Anyone who has bespoke Saville Row suits custom made would likely buy designer scarves, such as Yves St. Laurent, Dior, etc. Vintage and designer buyers will pay over $100 for those silk scarves
Absolutely to both!!! My husband wore bespoke Savile Row suits plus shirts. I’d be checking the ties and pocket squares plus the shoes. I bet you’ll find a pair or two... possibly Lobb.

Seeing the weaving set-up and the books, I would love to have known more about their story! I saw the bookcase full of books on tape in Episode 1 and thought they might find someone who did home crafting as they listened.

Finding a quick buyer for the large loom would have been difficult and a good guild will have lots of learning opportunities for people interested in the craft. Alex, thank you for thinking of the wig donation. My Mom had cancer and lost her hair, she had two wigs. When she died our family donated them to help women that couldn't afford to buy a wig due to the cost of their medical bills. Again, thank you Alex.
I was in a coffee shop a long time ago and the walls had shelves and shelves of used for sale books with sofas and comfy chairs and bistro tables all around. It was the coolest place to buy a book or just sit and read and enjoy a cup of coffee☕🥯. Maybe you could do something like that with your coffee shop.
You d have the same set up like barnes and nobles in the states. Old comftable settles and chairs. Books galore and fresh coffees and teas. And scones etc.
He couldn't under any circumstances deduct more than he paid. From the sound of it, the weaving stuff wasn't really part of the deal in the first place because the owner and requested it be donated.
It is a real service he provides. Early on he commented that the family were in a different country and could not travel due to pandemic. Even if they could, this would be a daunting and emotionally difficult task. Having someone who is ethical and kind to take care of this is a real blessing.
As I've watched this series, I'm thinking what fascinating people these must have been! The looms, books, china, quality of clothing, chess sets, musical instruments, puzzles all imply intelligence and talent. I hope they lived or are still living a good and fulfilling life.
I could spend literally days going through all those books and enjoy every second of it. Those are my dream rooms! I would love to see a vid going through some of the more rare and interesting finds.

You caught that too! I thought it was funny when he said that the handmade sweaters came from the looms. I have spun enough wool/silk fiber to have over 1,200 yards for one sweater which I knit. That is a lot of spinning for one sweater. But it is so beautiful when you finish. No loom involved, 🤣
@@jenniferr2057 It was the lady's wish that the stuff be donated to the community weaving group. I think joining a group of weavers that work together would certainly be the way to start if you don't have a loom of your own. Trying out a craft without having to invest loads of dollars into it is a wonderful option. I share my craft (soapmaking) with as many people as possible. Some underemployed folks have even learned enough to sell their product to help pay for household bills, so that makes me feel really good.
Our local guild has equipment that we loan to members it's a great way to discover if you like a technique. I was demonstrating at a festival where one of the observers kept bringing friends over to see me "looming" when I was spinning wool on my Columbine wheel. I kept saying " yes, I'm spinning wool into yarn" and she would bring another person over to see me "looming"! I love to demo both spinning and weaving, interacting with people is so much fun.
My husband is still using that exact LG flip phone...we just bought one last year to replace the one who died. He doesn’t want to use anything else. You can find anything on eBay.
The board game Masterpiece is the best! I believe out of production. I tried to buy on eBay once and it was no less than $250 at the time. I waited and checked garage sales and thrift stores. It took 4 years of searching and I found it for $2. It’s my favorite game in my collection.

Summary: Alex has checked the pockets; he did break even when the car sold; I’m sure he had a good reason to donate the looms, and yes he knew they were valuable; he now knows about money counting machines from the comments; he finds it more difficult to wear a rig when filming and can’t find the harness anyway. Looking through the boy's drawers under his bed cracked me up. My sister did that & she found a Victoria's Secret catalog between my nephew's mattresses, when he was like 14. LOL My sister freaked out & asked our Mom if she should confront him about it & Mom laughed & said No, just leave him alone.
I can’t believe how much stuff is kept in that house. I personally dread having to leave all my stuff when I die, thinking the kids will curse me! Luckily I don’t have basement or attic! My husband on the other hand has mountains of old tools etc under the house. My daughters will curse me because I have heaps of fabric. My grandson already eyes off my books as we have similar taste...horrid and fantasy! It really is a nightmare for those left behind. I bless the people who donate fabric to thrift stores. Last year I depended on donated fabric to make masks to send to schools and hospitals and also created "mask bags" with arm holes so the school band could use their saxophones. THOSE took a lot of fabric!
I also wonder what my children will say when they see the equivalent of a small sewing store, with fabric, accessories, machines, patterns and many more items, when I pass.

Gotta check that IBM box, the market for vintage PC stuff lately has been getting ridiculously hot. Late 1990's and back stuff has been exploding in value.
Keyboards too... I just gave a colleague a broken Cherry MX-3000 that I got for free about 20 years ago and he told me he saw an even worse one on eBay for 200 Euros! IBM Model Ms are probably the most valuable ones though. I almost started drooling when I saw that box of floppy discs - I couldn't see any labels but they somehow had a vibe of "original 90s software" to them.
That iPod is highly collectable and likely worth a few hundred dollars! Glad you found that Bose stereo. I was willing you to go back to it in the last video. The box is in the blue room in the basement.
@@user-ez1tf1vi4m I have one of those iPods and I LOVE it. Bad thing is that I have to use my old MacBook from 2007 to load songs or audiobooks. The reason is that my MacBook Pro 2012 and MacBook Pro from 2020, their OS (operating systems) will not recognize the older iPods. I was so mad when my 2012 MacBook had an update and I realized right away that that update prevented me from adding any music or audiobooks to my Classic iPod. So now I need to buy a new battery for my 2007 MacBook to edit my iPod. Apple shouldn't have done that to the Classic.
I live in Pennsylvania in a small town about an hour from Philly. It’s considered low crime and safe. But I’d never in a million years leave a bag of coins on the front seat of a car while I shopped. My first thought when I realized he was going into the store was “is he crazy leaving that in the car?” I guess the thing about Canadians being nice must really be true!
Suggestion ... have someone open each unsealed puzzle or game. I cleaned out a hoarder house and found about $200 in a puzzle box in with puzzle pieces. Ironically, this puzzle sat out in the driveway with other board games with a FREE sign on it, unclaimed by anyone after a yard sale. I don’t know why I thought to open it, it was light and obviously missing many pieces. Yikes!
In the US you can get a receipt from the Charity shop to decuct the value of the donation on your Income Tax. Does Canada do that or something similar?
Seriously cannot get used to seeing you sorting and piling things with so much room! Just easily gathering all the electronics and not climbing over anything or stepping on unknowns to get them all together!
His videos are overviews so that we can get a sense of surprising finds. He's not sorting. There are many other hours of doing that, and a nine hour sorting video would be pretty boring for most people.

OMG! Alex don't just give away those looms, spinning wheels and wool! There are two spinning wheels one in the dinning room in the zip up bag and one in the basement. Without knowing the brand of wheel they could be worth hundreds of dollars. My jaw dropped when I saw the loom in the basement. Large looms like that can go for thousands, sometimes they are worth between $5,000- $10,000!
Alex is replying in another comment that the former owner had requested it. They didn’t mention that in the first video when they discovered it, but seems that’s the case, anyway.
I'm amazed at how dry your basements are there. If all of that stuff was in my basement it would be moldy and ruined. Especially all that paper and wool. My basement is completely unusable space.
My friend's father had a HUGE collection of books. Any free wall space was filled with bookcases spilling over with them! After her parents had both passed, she was quite overwhelmed by the enormity of the clean up job.
My grand aunt also had a huge book collection! That on top of the other stuff was a bit overwhelming, I kept finding books in closets etc. After sorting and keeping some, my grandmother refused to let us bring the rest of them to charity... so now she has about 8 boxes full of books next to her own stash. I don’t look forward to having to help sort through all those books and sort again in the (hopefully) far future.
@@sannevandeneijnde6716 you can always donate to a local rest home, children’s home or I give mine to the military in particular to be shipped overseas to personnel who may need reading material. They’ll take everything.
Many towns have little free libraries. A lot of modern books could fill those up. I did read a recommendation recently to not put antique childrens books in those boxes, as they might have lead ink in them. Never realized it before.
Another good outlet for those books: prisons can accept paperbacks, but not hardcovers (at least that's how it is in the States). Good luck with it all.
And the military may take some paperbacks, one time I volunteered to make care package for troops and that was one of the items on the list. (I live in the States also, so not sure if they do this in Canada.)
Also some hospitals,community centers,old folks homes( I saw some large print books in the basement),various outreach programs for homeless/refugees and so on.

Yes - he has to condense an entire day's work into a half hour video so he, being a great video maker, doesn't include routine stuff --- he shows us the fun stuff - opening trunks, etc. A long series of pocket checks doesn't really carry the story along!
Man alive, I wish I had enough money just to leave in boxes around the house. I rolled a medium sized jar that someone had donated to a charity I was at and it was $175 dollars in quarters dimes and nickels. Can only emagine how much would be in those boxes.
I had a stash of coins and cashed them in at a Coin star machine in the local supermarket. Handing the receipt for £62 to the cashier I was gobsmacked to find I'd pressed the wrong button on the Coin Star machine and donated the lot to WWFA charity.🙄
If those dolls are storybook dolls they could be very valuable. Somehow my mom’s got lost in the move and it made us all very sad. We love playing with them when we were younger.
The dolls are not storybook dolls, Type in story book dolls on ebay and you will see what the boxes are and hat they look like. Unfortunately the dolls that he showed so far were very common dolls not with much at all. I have collected dolls since 1985 and was wishing he would have opened the other boxes so I could see if any were Ginny dolls. Now they can be worth some money!
Savil row in London is the street in London that had tailors that makes the best suits in the world 😊 I am thinking the husband did history and model kits, and the wife weaving and crafts ❤️
The PEANUTS comic strip scrapbook brought back memories. I’m almost 59, and as a kid I did the same thing - cut the funnies from the Sunday paper. Nancy & Sluggo was my favorite. I passed that fun activity on to my kids.

I think that the guild will loan out any of the weaving and spinning equipment to members who don't have a wheel, or loom, carder, winder, etc. I think the very large looms would stay at the place the guild meets since they are too big to check out for the week or month. I've just heard that they are very generous in letting members use different items that they normally could never afford.

If the fiber artist's stuff is donated to a club that's great but I'll admit I'm shocked because there's about $10k+ in there (not retail). I guess this falls under the same idea as the clothing in the Musicians house. All of us fiber lovers in your audience are scratching our heads though since we know that one cone of that warp thread goes for $15 and each of those bags of yarn have easily $200 of wool in them.

About the Musician house clothing --- Alex got $10,000 for all of it, which paid off what they paid for the entire house contents plus that got all that stuff out of the house. He knew that selling the clothing bit by bit would bring tenfold that amount of money but they don't have a way to store, clean, and sell a huge amount of clothing nor do they have the time. The vintage clothing people have all that. I have learned so much about conducting a business from him. You pick and choose what you can do and can't do as you try to make profits.

The cellphones can be donated to a cellular provider & if there’s any work to them they can apply it to your bill :) in the states companies clean them up and give them to women’s shelters

@21:43 - those old books are girls series books from the 1950's or earlier. If "Beverly Gray at the World's Fair" is in there (I saw Claire Blank was the author on one of them) you could have a $200 - 400 dollar item there!
When you were going through the trunk with the dolls, while you went quickly, I did see the groom doll. I still have the same groom with his bride. I am 72 and they were given to me on my 5th birthday. Hope that helps you with dating them.
Save the dining table and chiars for your coffee shop. It's also nice to have books in a coffee shop - either as a book swap or that people can start reading while they sit in the shop and buy for a $ if they want to take it home. (The $ could even be for charity if people donate books.)

@@MD-gz5yw Alex and his family might get some joy out of rolling the coins. In my family we saved our coins for a year, then we counted them with our kids and used them for something special on vacation, like renting a jet ski for a day.
Did you check the pockets of coats and others clothes? I found 7,000 in a coat one time. Was fun. 1,500.00 in a freezer in a box of peas. Several hundred in pots and pans. 75,00 in a book. Many coins in butter containers.
He has done this before, so it's my guess that his piling the clothes on the bed gave him the opportunity to check the pockets off camera, instead of boring us with that.

That ipod is worth quite a bit! Depending on the conditon it would be worth minimum few hundred dollars but since it has the box it will be worth more (especially if the manauls are in the box as well!)

He couldn't under any circumstances deduct more than he paid. From the sound of it, the weaving stuff wasn't really part of the deal in the first place because the owner and requested it be donated.

It is a real service he provides. Early on he commented that the family were in a different country and could not travel due to pandemic. Even if they could, this would be a daunting and emotionally difficult task. Having someone who is ethical and kind to take care of this is a real blessing.

As I've watched this series, I'm thinking what fascinating people these must have been! The looms, books, china, quality of clothing, chess sets, musical instruments, puzzles all imply intelligence and talent. I hope they lived or are still living a good and fulfilling life.

You caught that too! I thought it was funny when he said that the handmade sweaters came from the looms. I have spun enough wool/silk fiber to have over 1,200 yards for one sweater which I knit. That is a lot of spinning for one sweater. But it is so beautiful when you finish. No loom involved, 🤣

@@jenniferr2057 It was the lady's wish that the stuff be donated to the community weaving group. I think joining a group of weavers that work together would certainly be the way to start if you don't have a loom of your own. Trying out a craft without having to invest loads of dollars into it is a wonderful option. I share my craft (soapmaking) with as many people as possible. Some underemployed folks have even learned enough to sell their product to help pay for household bills, so that makes me feel really good.

Our local guild has equipment that we loan to members it's a great way to discover if you like a technique. I was demonstrating at a festival where one of the observers kept bringing friends over to see me "looming" when I was spinning wool on my Columbine wheel. I kept saying " yes, I'm spinning wool into yarn" and she would bring another person over to see me "looming"! I love to demo both spinning and weaving, interacting with people is so much fun.

The board game Masterpiece is the best! I believe out of production. I tried to buy on eBay once and it was no less than $250 at the time. I waited and checked garage sales and thrift stores. It took 4 years of searching and I found it for $2. It’s my favorite game in my collection.

Looking through the boy's drawers under his bed cracked me up. My sister did that & she found a Victoria's Secret catalog between my nephew's mattresses, when he was like 14. LOL My sister freaked out & asked our Mom if she should confront him about it & Mom laughed & said No, just leave him alone.

I can’t believe how much stuff is kept in that house. I personally dread having to leave all my stuff when I die, thinking the kids will curse me! Luckily I don’t have basement or attic! My husband on the other hand has mountains of old tools etc under the house. My daughters will curse me because I have heaps of fabric. My grandson already eyes off my books as we have similar taste...horrid and fantasy! It really is a nightmare for those left behind. I bless the people who donate fabric to thrift stores. Last year I depended on donated fabric to make masks to send to schools and hospitals and also created "mask bags" with arm holes so the school band could use their saxophones. THOSE took a lot of fabric!
I also wonder what my children will say when they see the equivalent of a small sewing store, with fabric, accessories, machines, patterns and many more items, when I pass.

Gotta check that IBM box, the market for vintage PC stuff lately has been getting ridiculously hot. Late 1990's and back stuff has been exploding in value.
Keyboards too... I just gave a colleague a broken Cherry MX-3000 that I got for free about 20 years ago and he told me he saw an even worse one on eBay for 200 Euros! IBM Model Ms are probably the most valuable ones though.
I almost started drooling when I saw that box of floppy discs - I couldn't see any labels but they somehow had a vibe of "original 90s software" to them.
That iPod is highly collectable and likely worth a few hundred dollars!

@@user-ez1tf1vi4m I have one of those iPods and I LOVE it. Bad thing is that I have to use my old MacBook from 2007 to load songs or audiobooks. The reason is that my MacBook Pro 2012 and MacBook Pro from 2020, their OS (operating systems) will not recognize the older iPods. I was so mad when my 2012 MacBook had an update and I realized right away that that update prevented me from adding any music or audiobooks to my Classic iPod. So now I need to buy a new battery for my 2007 MacBook to edit my iPod. Apple shouldn't have done that to the Classic.

I live in Pennsylvania in a small town about an hour from Philly. It’s considered low crime and safe. But I’d never in a million years leave a bag of coins on the front seat of a car while I shopped. My first thought when I realized he was going into the store was “is he crazy leaving that in the car?” I guess the thing about Canadians being nice must really be true!

Suggestion ... have someone open each unsealed puzzle or game. I cleaned out a hoarder house and found about $200 in a puzzle box in with puzzle pieces. Ironically, this puzzle sat out in the driveway with other board games with a FREE sign on it, unclaimed by anyone after a yard sale. I don’t know why I thought to open it, it was light and obviously missing many pieces. Yikes!
In the US you can get a receipt from the Charity shop to decuct the value of the donation on your Income Tax. Does Canada do that or something similar?

OMG! Alex don't just give away those looms, spinning wheels and wool! There are two spinning wheels one in the dinning room in the zip up bag and one in the basement. Without knowing the brand of wheel they could be worth hundreds of dollars. My jaw dropped when I saw the loom in the basement. Large looms like that can go for thousands, sometimes they are worth between $5,000- $10,000!
Alex is replying in another comment that the former owner had requested it. They didn’t mention that in the first video when they discovered it, but seems that’s the case, anyway.

I'm amazed at how dry your basements are there. If all of that stuff was in my basement it would be moldy and ruined. Especially all that paper and wool. My basement is completely unusable space.

My friend's father had a HUGE collection of books. Any free wall space was filled with bookcases spilling over with them! After her parents had both passed, she was quite overwhelmed by the enormity of the clean up job.
I cleaned out my home library and got it down to two bookcases. I don’t want my daughter to ever be burdened with that.
My grand aunt also had a huge book collection! That on top of the other stuff was a bit overwhelming, I kept finding books in closets etc. After sorting and keeping some, my grandmother refused to let us bring the rest of them to charity... so now she has about 8 boxes full of books next to her own stash. I don’t look forward to having to help sort through all those books and sort again in the (hopefully) far future.

Many towns have little free libraries. A lot of modern books could fill those up. I did read a recommendation recently to not put antique childrens books in those boxes, as they might have lead ink in them. Never realized it before.
Another good outlet for those books: prisons can accept paperbacks, but not hardcovers (at least that's how it is in the States). Good luck with it all.
And the military may take some paperbacks, one time I volunteered to make care package for troops and that was one of the items on the list. (I live in the States also, so not sure if they do this in Canada.)
Also some hospitals,community centers,old folks homes( I saw some large print books in the basement),various outreach programs for homeless/refugees and so on.

Man alive, I wish I had enough money just to leave in boxes around the house. I rolled a medium sized jar that someone had donated to a charity I was at and it was $175 dollars in quarters dimes and nickels. Can only emagine how much would be in those boxes.

I had a stash of coins and cashed them in at a Coin star machine in the local supermarket. Handing the receipt for £62 to the cashier I was gobsmacked to find I'd pressed the wrong button on the Coin Star machine and donated the lot to WWFA charity.🙄
If those dolls are storybook dolls they could be very valuable. Somehow my mom’s got lost in the move and it made us all very sad. We love playing with them when we were younger.

The dolls are not storybook dolls, Type in story book dolls on ebay and you will see what the boxes are and hat they look like. Unfortunately the dolls that he showed so far were very common dolls not with much at all. I have collected dolls since 1985 and was wishing he would have opened the other boxes so I could see if any were Ginny dolls. Now they can be worth some money!

The PEANUTS comic strip scrapbook brought back memories. I’m almost 59, and as a kid I did the same thing - cut the funnies from the Sunday paper. Nancy & Sluggo was my favorite. I passed that fun activity on to my kids.

I think that the guild will loan out any of the weaving and spinning equipment to members who don't have a wheel, or loom, carder, winder, etc. I think the very large looms would stay at the place the guild meets since they are too big to check out for the week or month. I've just heard that they are very generous in letting members use different items that they normally could never afford.

Those are Story Book dolls from the 40's and 50's. My sister had a large collection of them.
If the fiber artist's stuff is donated to a club that's great but I'll admit I'm shocked because there's about $10k+ in there (not retail). I guess this falls under the same idea as the clothing in the Musicians house. All of us fiber lovers in your audience are scratching our heads though since we know that one cone of that warp thread goes for $15 and each of those bags of yarn have easily $200 of wool in them.

About the Musician house clothing --- Alex got $10,000 for all of it, which paid off what they paid for the entire house contents plus that got all that stuff out of the house. He knew that selling the clothing bit by bit would bring tenfold that amount of money but they don't have a way to store, clean, and sell a huge amount of clothing nor do they have the time. The vintage clothing people have all that. I have learned so much about conducting a business from him. You pick and choose what you can do and can't do as you try to make profits.

@21:43 - those old books are girls series books from the 1950's or earlier. If "Beverly Gray at the World's Fair" is in there (I saw Claire Blank was the author on one of them) you could have a $200 - 400 dollar item there!
When you were going through the trunk with the dolls, while you went quickly, I did see the groom doll. I still have the same groom with his bride. I am 72 and they were given to me on my 5th birthday. Hope that helps you with dating them.
Save the dining table and chiars for your coffee shop. It's also nice to have books in a coffee shop - either as a book swap or that people can start reading while they sit in the shop and buy for a $ if they want to take it home. (The $ could even be for charity if people donate books.)

We put them in a bank bag with account info. They just deposit the total in our account.

Did you check the pockets of coats and others clothes? I found 7,000 in a coat one time. Was fun. 1,500.00 in a freezer in a box of peas. Several hundred in pots and pans. 75,00 in a book. Many coins in butter containers.
He has done this before, so it's my guess that his piling the clothes on the bed gave him the opportunity to check the pockets off camera, instead of boring us with that.

That ipod is worth quite a bit! Depending on the conditon it would be worth minimum few hundred dollars but since it has the box it will be worth more (especially if the manauls are in the box as well!)
I have one, and my family are always telling me that the classic was the best, as it has such a big memory.
If you use a coin machine you can't see if they're older coins with silver content. And our bicentennial quartets are worth more...

I saw "Centennial" by James Michener. One of my favorite historical novels. He was able to make history come alive.
