    First person I've seen speak about the weight thing and it's good to see someone take it seriously. GVW in the UK is 3500kg and it doesn't take much to get to that weight with that kind of van. Nice build, hope you enjoy it!

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 5 lety +2

      Thanks Joe. We have seen so many cute looking builds but they look so heavy. When you ask them what it weighs, post-conversion, you get nothing other than the sound of crickets.. these people are putting themselves and other road users at risk with dangerously overladen vehicles.

    Thanks for mentioning the issue of legal Gross Vehicle Weight. I've often had the same thought, watching other builds with chunky wood etc.

    This layout is very similar to what I want, and you're the first person to mention weight. I left a comment for a guy who had a Murphy bed in his van asking what the total weight was and no response. Thank you for bringing this up.

    You are so right about the importance of weight...A lot of people don't realize that if there is an accident and you are over your max allowance that your insurance company can turn the guns on ya. As well as you may be held at fault for the accident even if technically you weren't. So just for peace of mind, weight is indeed important. Great video. Thanks for sharing it all and offering up some great tips...HAPPY TRAVELS!

    Nice simple build. Noticed the light weight materials so glad to see you guys were on it. It really adds up. The show/toilet/drying space is so useful. I do a lot of mtb riding in the UK and being able to air/dry wet clothing is essential. Still in planning stage for me. Have thought about a wet area at the rear with a bed that folds half way across sideways to give space. It will take ages before I get it perfect. Happy adventures. ☺️

      @ComfortablyLost  Před 4 lety +1

      Practice and experience makes perfect. We are still changing our van setup and making/planning slight alterations. Yes it is definitely really handy to have a space for wetsuits, wet jackets etc out of the main space in the bathroom. It definitely makes the inside more cramped, but also more functional/practical which we prefer. New 27.5+ hardtails have been a blast. :)

    I love the layout. So far, you're the only van owner I saw with a sliding cabinet but still can fit 2 person in a bed. And you have a big shower/toilet area. And you fit a tall pantry, you guys totally ditch those small cabinets type pantry above wich is for me is amazing! I also like your idea for your refrigerator.
    I'll sure make you one of my references when I make my own van-house. ♥️

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks for watching. Yes we sacrificed a lot of the van's floor space to have more functional storage and utility areas. It's not to everyone's taste, but it works really well for us because it's essentially a really small studio apartment and home office on wheels with all the same essential features and comforts. It's exactly what we wanted, and two years on we wouldn't make many changes to the layout or design still. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing your creation come to life in the near future!

      @@ComfortablyLost aaaaahhh!!! OMG! I didn't expect this reply. ♥️ Thank you very much for noticing this simple me. 🤩
      It really depends on the people/person who live in the van on what layout fits them. Some people want their home more visual, comfortable but it has a lot of dead space because of the design, while some wants practicality, simple but livable which I find yours to be one.
      And thank you~~ I really want to try living in a van. For me it's trilling and challenging. But it might not be soon cause I need fund for it, I have to convince parents for them to let me live on my own (strict parents. 😂) And I need to repeatedly think of the pros.&cons. I know living in a van is NOT easy.

    Really enjoyed watching your CZcams video. I am thinking of kitting outa LWB Renault Master. It will be a van for one but I plan to have a bed that can expand to a double for flexibility. My original idea was to have the bed sideways across the back (I am only 5ft 3in, so would easily fit crossways). I like the idea of lots of space in the “garage” for an inflatable standup paddle board, outdoor chairs, beach shade etc. Today the idea of full height storage on the side, as you have in your van occurred to me, so I was really pleased to see the way that you have done that. Core flute doors are a great idea. I have actually seen online a camper made from corflute and designed to be towed by a bicycle. It was good to see the gas cylinder box is well. When I visited the RV superstore they told me that I need to have the gas cylinders in a box. Your video showing how this can be done was great.
    My idea is storage on the side, a single bed on the other side (that can be expanded to a double) and a fold up table attached to the back of the storage/wardrobe. I think I can work out a way to secure my push bike between the bed and the storage unit while traveling.
    One question I have is how wide is your opening to enter the van from the side door. I know it is pretty standard for van conversions to have a kitchen cabinet overlapping the door opening and I plan to do the same, but I have been wondering what size overlap is feasible. I’d be interested to know how wide your entry is now.
    An inspiring fit out, and good advice about various things to keep in mind and possible pitfalls.

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety

      Our side entry is 510mm at the narrowest point - plenty of width for us to comfortably walk through. You want to make it as narrow as possible in order to allow for a larger kitchen bench space (if that's you thing - we love to eat and cook inside).
      And how awesome is the bicycle camper trailer made form coreflute! That was actually our inspiration for using it as a material in our build. Actually we were looking to use it more extensively but we had a hard time tracking down the fire-resistant version of the coreflute so we just used the standard 5mm stuff for our wardrobe storage unit. It's so light and easy to work with, just need a sharp knife and scissors.
      Good luck with your build, designing and researching is the fun part!

    • @runningthroughrain3058
      @runningthroughrain3058 Před 6 lety +3

      Comfortably Lost thanks for replying to my questions. I am pretty small, so I’m sure that a 510 mm entry would be plenty wide enough for me. It’s good to know that other people have found that. I’m pretty excited about my van plan. I have plenty of time for research as it will be 4 to 6 months before my van, a LWB Renault Master will be delivered. I plan for it to be my retirement home for at least a year and possibly 2 to 3, travelling around Australia.
      Like you, I want a decent kitchen bench space but I also want space for an inflatable stand-up paddle board, a boogie board, a couple of aluminium outdoor chairs, my pushbike, clothes etc. As I will be on my own I’m planning a single bed that can be expanded to a double if at some point in the future there is someone I want to travel with. This means the option of keeping the bike under the bed is less feasible, as I might as well have a single bed that can be used as a couch, and therefore not so high. At the moment I’m thinking about various possibility of securing the bike in a passageway between the bed and the storage cupboard/wardrobe when traveling, but I don’t want any sort of mount that sticks up from the floor. Anyway, I’ve got a few months to think about solutions to that one.
      I hope your travels are going well and will keep an eye out for your CZcams videos.

    What a great informative video! So good to see Aussie vanlifers, as so much in the American videos doesn’t apply to us (different materials etc). I’m looking at doing this myself and have been showing my son videos of late as he will be helping with the build. As a carpenter, I think it’s worse for him (in regards to your comment about it being easier for chippies) as he’s looking at it as he would a house build and he can’t wrap his head around certain aspects lol. We’ll get there though! Just subscribed, and looking forward to checking out your other videos 👍

      In regards to your comment about tradies/chippies struggling with it, yes I totally know what you mean. I have had the same conversation with many trade qualified and handy people, they just struggle with the concept of very limited space that needs to be multifunctional and light weight. And the electrical side of things also wigs out most people, even electricians who only deal with household AC stuff and they know nothing about DC and solar stuff.

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety

      The main reason is that most people doing DIY builds are not qualified builders, and wood is very easy to work with compared to metals like aluminium. I know that the 80/20 aluminium extrusions are very popular with some more advanced DIYers in North America.

    • @PaulLadendorf
      @PaulLadendorf Před 6 lety

      Another reason is that aluminum is a lot more expensive than wood.

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety

      Interestingly, we found the aluminium square tubing to be generally less expensive than wood, in Australian cities at least. A 6.5m length of 25.4x25.4x1.2mm aluminium square tubing cost cost around $22AUD per length from the local aluminium warehouse. To buy quality wood with similar strength and deflection characteristics would have cost the same or slightly more, plus the cost of coating it all with clear varnish with anti-mould treatment. Of course it varies country to country, and city to city, but in our experience working with aluminium tubing in three different locations around Aus was that it was always cheaper or the same price. And it's easy to modify, reuse and re purpose too as needed.

I've been wanting to do that but wanted to see someone doing it so I could see how it looks. It's adorable! One suggestion, please move the camera more slowly. I was getting a bit motion sick with all the quick movements. Thank you!

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Arthur. The aluminium square tubing is also quite inexpensive, around $25AUD per 6.5m length bought from a direct supplier. The extruded aluminium is much stronger, but it also costs significantly more and weighs more too.

      @arthurplottier9783 Před 4 lety

      @@ComfortablyLost I am aware of the good use and cost of the aluminum tubing, I have used it on my van roof rack bars. I get my supply from Capral in Tasmania. IMO, and I agree with you T-slot aluminum profiles are too expensive and not necessary to use in a van conversion.

    Great video, finally someone talking about weight of materials. Gave me some good ideas for my build. The plastic panels for the cabinet doors is a great combo for the aluminum tracking, thank you. Trying to find a similar lightweight panel for the walls that is flame retardant.

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety

      It is possible to get corflute (corrugated plastic sheets) that is flame retardant. Maybe see what the weight/space is of the plastic/alum composite panels. Anecdotally we found the 3mm composite panel to be about the same weight as a same size sheet of 7mm plywood. The composite panel has the benefit of being pre-painted, easy to fasten to, durable and flame retardant.

  • @Mevi
    @Mevi Před 6 lety +1

    "Unless you've done it yourself"..... agreed. I spend almost as much time just standing in the van staring at the space trying to visualise as I do with building it. How am I going to live in it, what do I need? I can't easily move the furniture like in a house. This is my first van, so my ideas constantly change as I spend time in it.
    Loving your van. Fits your needs and it's a solid build. I envy the amount of space in Oz you have to explore. The UK seems tiny when I know I can easily drive top to bottom in a couple of days allowing for endless traffic and roadworks.

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety +1

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety +1

      And one more thought, if this is your first ever build just keep it as simple and modular as you can. That way if you chop and change you can pull out the cabinets, bedframe etc and adjust as needed. Our van is the product of many previous vehicles and experiences, so we had a good idea of what we wanted and why. Everyone is different though. Keep it simple!

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi Před 6 lety

      Thank you, that seems like really sensible advice. I had planned to get cardboard boxes for a mock-up, but your video and your advice points me to a cheap-build V1 and a more permanent V2 next year. I think I'm settled on permanent transverse bed location, with the utilities and power underneath, so I'd have the rest of the space to play with over time. Thanks again. :)

    I've been building out a Transit for the past 6 months ( work in progress - of course). I fully agree with your window comment. I did, however, install a window in the sliding door to make viewing traffic to the right (canada) easier and much safer. Also the window has a small screened awning to help with ventilation. THX for the video.

    • @TerryManitoba
      @TerryManitoba Před 6 lety +1

      Ya - You know the old saying. If you figure it will take 1 hour to do a job - then Double It. For a van build - times it by "5" and you will be close to how long it will take!!!

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes - it's on our list of 'maybe things to install when we can be bothered'.
      You're right, there's a massive blind spot in that area, so the window would help, plus extra views from the stove and fresh air. The awning style windows are super expensive though, so it's not high priority for us right now. But we definitely do see the sense in it! :)

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 6 lety +1

      yes exactly haha. Double the budget and triple the estimated time.
      And you're never 100% finished.. even now we still have a long list of things we will upgrade and change when we have the chance.

    • @TerryManitoba
      @TerryManitoba Před 6 lety +3

      That's the beauty of doing it yourself - you know how it was put together and as you experience/live in the van you know what could be changed if need be - usually at that stage, it is a matter of inches if not factions there of!!! As an example, one of my progressions was - no sink, to a bar sink with foot pump, to a larger plastic tub from the house, to what is the final 18*13*10 inch deep sink with a proper faucet (electric pump 'may' happen in the future).-:)

    • @ComfortablyLost
      @ComfortablyLost  Před 5 lety

      Us too! But given how much power is required to power an induction cook top and how little roof estate we have for PV panels and that we are off-grid it's highly unlikely any time soon. Maybe in the future when induction cook tops are more efficient.

      Yes true, poor choice of words there. We'd love to get rid of the LPG to simplify our system and make the van that little bit safer. It's just not really feasible for mobile off-grid systems yet. Maybe in our next major renovation we'll ditch the gas and go full electric.

    Nice Van. In your setup it seems to be possible to change the hook in the bathroom to a box with a sliding mechanism ... with that mechanism you can hang on a wooden-box with hangingspace inside. The whole thing can slide over the kitchens countertop. The only thing you need to change then: lay your big suits in half. But if anyone wants to use the bathroom or the shower you don't need to remove all the stuff on the hook. Just an idea that will work perfectly with your floorplan!
